You can not like to wear suits, you can not like the symbol that suits give off, but you still should have one good suit.

I spend 8-10 hours a day in either my workout clothes, pajamas, or jeans and a t-shirt and you couldn't buy my suits off me. If I was in better shape I'd wear them each and every time I go into work, but even being a bit pudgy I still get compliments.

A suit makes me look great, but it also makes me disappear in a crowd really. Nothing people really remember about me. None of my personality shines through

I also don't want to work anywhere where a suit is expected.

People saying suits are too expensive are probably out of touch with the fashion industry.

Nowadays you can buy a Loro Piana casual suit like this:

https://www.loropiana.com/it/eshop/...i-cotone-lana-e-seta/p-FAG4551?colorCode=W000

for under 3.000€, and we're talking about cream of the crop materials.

You can get a Brunello Cucinelli suit (again, top tier italian products) for similar prices:

https://shop.brunellocucinelli.com/it-it/uomo/autunno-inverno/collezione/abiti/

Or you can go to Milan, walk into Caraceni (basically the most important bespoke suit artisans in the country) and get a bespoke suit of the highest quality materials for 3 to 5.000€.

Since a lot of people here are US based, you could visit Atlanta and get an excellent Sid Mashburn suit:

https://www.sidmashburn.com/shop/suits.html

for as little as 1.000$.

And this is the EXPENSIVE stuff. This is for those who want to show off or believe they're making an investment or simply can afford to blow money at fashion. A guy with a good suit doesn't necessarily earn more than you, because he probably spent less on that than you are on videogames and cellphones.

I love wearing a nice suit to a wedding, but if I had to wear a suit every day I would likely hate my life. Special occasions only.

Some of the strangest posts I've ever read here or on Gaf in this thread, and from both sides too.

I mean, it's not like most guys in Era & GAF are getting laid. So of course they're going to be adverse to wearing/owning suits.

Personally I own 1 dark gray and 1 blue with white pin stripes fitted suits. Both cost me about $900ea and I don't wear them too often, but often enough to justify owning them. I'm looking into getting a brown suit near my wedding anniversary, where I always take the wifey out to a nice dinner.

You're going to turn heads & make good impressions wearing a nice fitted suit.

If the only way you can get laid is by wearing a $900 suit then you have other things to worry about.

Personally I think I have a grey blazer somewhere and plenty of nice shirts, but that's as far as i go towards suits. I don't work at a job were I need a suit and I've only been to one wedding in my life (which the suits were rented as all the men wore matching). I will never be in a situation where I need to wear a suit often enough to justify buying one, but I have nothing against them or the people who wear them on a daily basis. I'm just glad I don't have to wear one myself.

I don't wear suits when I'm not required (formal occasions where they're expected like weddings/funerals, interviews, and in a month work) but I definitely don't agree with some of the complaints in the thread about them being uncomfortable; even as somebody very sensitive to certain fabrics I really enjoy how they feel to wear (except the tie) when it's tailored.

There are aspects of suits which I don't like. Primarily I don't like how I'm (or at least, will be) 'forced' to wear one at work, they're annoying to maintain (mostly requiring dry-cleaning every few months), and for me it's really difficult to find suits which fit me (anything I get will need to be tailored given I've a very short and slim build, but it's tough to find a suit to start with which is a good fit) that aren't pretty expensive (at least expensive for somebody who's only starting work and will need to buy about four suits given they'll be worn daily for long hours).

I do really like how they look and feel though.

Well-tailored suits look great, but being forced to wear suits all the time sucks, and most people who are just required to wear them do not wear particularly good ones.

That's one of the most important things. You can buy a relatively cheap suit and then get it tailored for an affordable price. Apart from being more comfortable,it also looks way better than a non-tailored suit.

Also it's very important to accessorize your suit properly too.

I wear one of 2 Christian Louboutin limited city shoes in brown and of course red soles (I also have 2 Louboutin sneakers for more casual wear). Hermes apple watch band that matches the colour of one of Louboutin shoes. I have a Christian Louboutin street briefcase with a messenger bag in black and red. Some nice Paul Smith colourful socks. I have a couple different brands for ties, from Hermes to Stefano Ricco to Ermenegildo Zegna. Oh and you gotta smell fresh in a great suit so I'll wear Creed Aventus.

I don't do cufflinks or tie clips.

Tom Ford is a bit too expensive for most people I think, a few weeks ago I spend 400 Euro on a simple bracelet from them, but I agree they have amazing suits. . For people that watch the tv serie "Suits", Harvey generally wears suits from Tom Ford from what I remember (http://lawandstyle.ca/style/the-suits-on-suits/).

I personally don't like to wear a full suit, I prefer to go around without jacket and tie. It fits better with who I am and in Italy it is to damn hot in the summer.

For jewelry (rings, bracelets, necklaces, etc.) I like to go with Alexander McQueen, Gucci, Tom Ford, Givenchy, Giovanni Raspini etc. And it's not even that expensive.

For bags, if I had the money I would go for Bottega Veneta. Else Burberry has also some beautiful bags.

In the end I prefer to go in sweatpants to work, it's just so damn comfy. Unfortunately it is not really acceptable where I go.

I do enjoy the absurdity of pointing out bad people wearing suits as an excuse to hate on them.

The entire thread in a nutshell.

Guys, it's not that hard. I swear that the last suit I got was from the mall—visit one sometime, they're still out there. Banana republic and other shit like express take coupons for up to $200 on suits that are made of nice wool and are ready to wear off the rack without needing alterations. They probably even take care of alterations in the store.
I passed on buying a game to get a suit instead just to give you an idea. I used it to attend a meeting and look like an adult.

I've ended up being a lazy grown man in shorts but c'mon no need to hate on other men and women in suits jesus

I hate wearing a suit, I find them uncomfortable and much to formal for most things. I am happiest in jeans and a t-shirt. Thankfully, prior to working for myself I had jobs which were casual and allowed jeans and a t-shirt (human services and finance). My last job we only had to dress up if we went out into the community for something which was rare or we had visitors to the building and even then I usually wore dress pants and a nice shirt.

Aspiring to be successful and rich is an issue now. I've read it all

I'm talking about greed and the general mindset that being rich will lead to happiness. A lot of people are like that, even on this forum so of course I'll be mocked for a my comment.

You used to word successful. Do you think that all rich people are successfull? Do you think you can't be successful while being poor?

Suits are the worst. I have a thick neck and a prominent adams apple. Even with a tailored shirt, I'm choking all day long. Not to mention I'm just a naturally sweaty person and a suit is like a death trap for me.

The corporate bank I work as a contractor for just went full casual. As in, no more suits. Jeans every day. It's a glorious change, introduced by a new CEO.

I basically feel the same way Ed Asner does.

Due to work I often meet other Developers or Publishers at events like the GamesCom and I quickly realized that wearing a full suit makes you most of the time instantly overdressed. Casual or mixed suits are fine tho.

Most game devs dress like absolute shit. It doesn't take much to step your game up a bit and outshine everyone.

Who holds a wine glass like that. Wtf. Really nice fitting suit separates are also awesome. I wish most people could wear call clothes but the hate silicone valley has on suits is dumb. It's nerd culture hate on traditional men fashion while never placing the effort somewhere else. Making so many of them bad at dressing themselves.

There's a subculture of people bringing that shit back. Check out YouTube channels like AlphaM.

I don't wear one to work but I enjoy putting on a for suit for a big occasion every now and then. Going to a wedding next weekend for example.

People don't like them? That's fine.

Really? Complete opposite for me. I imbue my suits with a lot of personality and since pretty much no one wears suits here in Sweden (except in Stockholm) disappearing into the crowd is the least of my concerns lol.

Calling someone a "suit" as an insult has been a thing for decades. It's just a part of counter-culture. Nothing new and not particularly useful to get worked up about it.

I don't mind wearing a suit from time to time for specific occasions/events, but I wouldn't like it every day. Getting it cleaned is a hassle and it's just not practical for the weather here. I had a job interview downtown in the middle of summer a few years ago and between the train and walking to the office, I was pouring sweat by the time I got there. It sucked.

For me, I just think suits are boring for Men's fashion. Think about it for a second: The only formal dress that exists for men is some form of a suit, and they all look similar. Women have a much larger variety of things they can wear, while men are stuck with suits.
Exactly my problem with them. I detest that the only clothing men are permitted to wear in situations where they need to look more professional is so identikit. Suits turn you into a faceless worker that isn't permitted to have a personality, and it doesn't help that they are horrid to wear all day.

It might look great but they are not comfortable at all. I hate to wear one, I don't need a suit to feel sexy and they lack personality lol. I wish I could wear a black t-shirt and jeans everyday of the week...

You never wore a well made suit if you think they're uncomfortable.

If someone loves how they look/feel while wearing a suit, then cool - more power to them. I like how my suits look on me, but I hate how it feels to wear them, so I only do when I have to give formal presentations at work.

However it's extremely easy to get by without owning a suit these days, assuming you aren't interviewing for jobs all the time or have a job where it isn't necessary to wear one. I have a hard time believing anyone gives a shit if someone is wearing a nice button up shirt or something to a wedding/funeral/whatever instead of a suit. I'm also not going to look down on someone for not wanting to spend hundreds to thousands of dollars on an outfit that will only be used on very rare occasions.

Plus the whole idea of "every man MUST OWN (thing)" needs to die off already

I've always disliked them for the most part. They've been around forever. Some look very nice (e.g. fitted) but usually very expensive. Women's suits look much better.

For what it's worth we had to wear shirt & tie for school and that's probably the base of my contempt for them. Luckily I am in academia so I wear whatever the fuck I want to everyday. Pretty chill.

I look good in a suit but it's usually hot where I live and my job lets me wear what I like so 99% of the time it's jeans or khakis and a short sleeve shirt. My one suit is for wedding duty only.

I got a new fitted suit earlier this year for a job interview (got the gig). Love it and I feel and look like a million bucks. Looking to get a few more when I get the cash, but needed to start with black since I hadn't bought a suit since High School.

This place is weird as shit sometimes, in a really funny way at least.

I've only worn a truly nice suit a handful of times in my life and it was pretty fantastic. Made me feel like a million bucks. If I had to wear a full suit to work every day, I'd probably be less enthusiastic about them I suppose but I don't so...

Edit: I do wear a blazer a lot though. It wasn't expensive and still looks great and fits really well.

My work doesn't require me to wear one but I like putting one on for special occasions.

Also if you can't afford custom, clearance racks and a good tailor are a totally valid option.

for as little as 1.000$.

Wait, this is considered "not too expensive"? I paid <200 $ for my last suit. It fits (IMO), it's comfortable and doesn't pucker easily. What am I missing? What justifies a 1000% price increase? Cotton instead of high quality wool?

AFAIK a smooth lapel roll can make (or show) the difference between a cheap suit and an expensive tailored one. But that can't be it. Or do people really look at someone in a suit and think: "Wow, that lapel roll..."

But I prefer my day to day clothes!
