Highlights:
  • Riot says they are now entering "Phase 2" of the company, where they will be releasing a handful of big titles per decade (in addition to supporting League of Legends, of course).
  • Riot now has over 2500 employees to help achieve this goal.
  • They have many new games in development right now concurrently, with some having started ideation five years ago when they started expanding their R&D division.
  • It sounds like they intend to have at least two new titles out within the next five years, though given their behavior lately, I imagine we're not too far from the first announcement.
  • Their games will be focused on very particular audiences. They consider League of Legends to be a game that's very well targeted at a niche instead of trying to appeal to everyone, and their future titles will follow that mold. To note, this doesn't mean their games won't be accessible, but don't expect something like a GTA-esque game where there's 15 different game modes.
  • Riot is very focused on longevity and building/evolving their games around the wants and needs of their community. In case this isn't clear, they're nigh assuredly making multiplayer service games.
  • Riot says that if you can think of a game where their fans said "We would like to see Riot make a game like that.", that they have at least actively considered it and looked into it, and may very well be making it.
  • Riot is open to both new IPs and using the League of Legends IP for new things. What they're focused on is first having a great game concept, and then applying an IP that serves the game concept, instead of just ordering a game to be made with a specific IP.
  • Riot is open to any platform for their games as long as it makes sense and fits the audience for a given title. This includes PC, mobile, and consoles.
  • The MMO they tweeted about was semi-serious. The literal statement was mostly intended as a joke, and was meant to get people thinking about "What's next from Riot?", though they were surprised by how excited and passionate people were about the idea. However, they clarified that if they were working on an "MMO", it would be notably different from how MMOs are thought of today, at least in the sense that it wouldn't be a game similar to World of Warcraft.
  • Ultimately Riot hopes to be known as a company that's about games built around fans instead of as the League of Legends company.

Wouldn't be surprised to see the fighting game announcement at EVO. The timing is just too good.

So normally I would say the game is way too big for EVO, but since they say they consider their games targeted niche products, and really want to go after hardcore fans, I think that would actually be an appropriate venue for that type of corporate spirit.

So they really are working on a MMO.

2500 employees, that's a fuckton.

Even when I interviewed with them back in 2010, they were doing crazy well. They really did strike gold.

Mark Merrill recently has an interview where he said the following:

Question: "Do you think there's been a genre of game that hasn't been made yet?"
Marc said "Yes, we have an idea"

I'm hoping that's one of the games that goes into development, i'm really curious what it could be.

Either way, Riot has done really well by League of Legends, so i'm super excited to see what other games they come out with.

Here's hoping they show Seth Killian's fighting game soon.

Although if they are making such a game, this line

isn't what I'd like to hear.

I'd say every non-platform fighting game on the market is heavily targeted to the niche of fighting game fans, whereas with Rising Thunder I though they could bring about a genre Renaissance by capturing a wider audience through its design decisions like accessible inputs.

I haven't played League of Legends in yonks, but it never particularly struck me as a very strong IP. The lore was nebulous at best and the character design was a mishmash of random ideas. I guess they've improved that since then?

It's uh... I think you should take that more as they don't want to make games like GTA than that they want to make games where you do quarter circles on the d-pad.

They hired a ton of professional writers to redo it a few years after launch.

More importantly, where is the sequel to League of Legends Tower Defense, Riot's second most popular game?

Dropped League years ago but I'm legitimately interested in an expanded universe, I love what their artistic team is doing.

Very interested to see what they come up with, I haven't played League in years but they have a good cast of characters that shouldn't be bound to just one genre.

Especially since I've been waiting for the Rising Thunder devs to announce SOMETHING.

Would definitely play a LoL fighter if that's still happening. Wonder how big they would go with the roster, 140 is uh.. more than most fighting games have but having your favorite champ miss the cut would suck.

There's also an X factor here: The two owners of what was Radiant Entertainment (and are presumably leads or other high-ranking positions on this theoretical project) are also two of the three principle owners of Triple Perfect, the company that organizes Evolution. Riot may well be doing them a solid -- on top of how they would have the eyes of a huge chunk of the core fighting game population, either on site or on stream.

Let's be real: if Riot announces another project, they're going to get a ton of attention. It probably doesn't matter where they announce it. Evo is as good of a place as any, especially if they're serious about going after the fighting game niche.

They will almost assuredly start relatively small and then add fighters for the next 20+ years.

At least they can call themselves Riot Games. They released Mechs vs Minions, at least they have something else besides LoL, but want another videogame!

I'm really excited to see what they do to shake the FGC market. I hope we have something at EVO, but I won't hold my breath.

Ever since they gobbled up the Rising Thunder folks I've been waiting for the LoL fighting game to emerge, maybe now is the time.

That fighting game is probably the first to come. Wish it was Rising Thunder but it will probably be a League fighting game.

A LoL fighting game sounds too good to be true. I feel like I'm going to get my hopes up.

Doing an Overwatch like shooter with the LoL Champs done by Riot would be amazing, but so will be a fighting game from them.

Riot is a beast in supporting their games and doing esport events.. so everything could be really interesting.

What would be in the starting roster of the LoL fighter? Lee Sin for sure, but who else? Thematically relevant champions or just the most popular picks?

After the MMO rumor/tease/whatever a week or so ago I redownloaded LoL for the first time in ages and man they've really revamped it! Lore especially, but it looks totally different than I remember, and so much stuff has changed... they've really done a great job supporting it. Lore's great too, so I'm definitely in for some spinoffs.

Fighter at EVO would be neat but I'm even worse at fighters than I am at MOBAs so definitely not for me, lol. Gimme an RPG or something.

Whatever fighting game they stand to put should be interesting. Looking forward to whatever that stands to be...
