Seems odd to have one official controller on the right and a mock-up on the left, especially considering the buttons and joy-stick probably feel quite different than the official one.

The stick is nearly indistinguishable from the one on the official joycon. The L/R buttons are a bit more raised (and feel better to press), but it basically looks like it could be an official Nintendo product. It certainly doesn't look or feel out of place when using it with a regular right joycon.

So in your opinion, the current Japanese model is just borked and those who own it are out of luck I guess?
Sorry to reply to you twice, but i guess it isn't just my opinion. My guess was spot on.

"As previously reported, HORI is releasing its own Joy-Con type of controller that comes with a standard d-pad. With the release of the controller in Japan, users noted the Joy-Con drains the Switch battery even while the console is in sleep mode.

HORI gave this comment about the D-pad controller:

"We are working to have this issue resolved by the time this product is released in the US. We don't have further details at this time, but we wanted to personally reach out to let you know that we are working on this and this will be resolved."

Although there were some issues for the original Japanese release of the controller, it looks like they're going to be fixed by the time it releases in the West!"

Ah cool, thanks! I'll probably get the US release then when it comes out. Just wish it was a solid color. :/

Ugh! I NEED matching right joy-con for those Mario and Zelda ones - those designs are sick. :(

Nintendo just release matte black joy-con already, I'll drop full price for them:

That's good to hear! I still don't have any plans on purchasing one though. My Switch mainly sits in its dock, and usually when I'm out I prop it up on the table. I wouldn't get any use out of it haha.

I prefer the L / LZ buttons on the new Hori joy con, it's more clicky.

About the battery drain, I hope they do find a way to fix it.

Yeah kind of. I mean, that is sort of how it goes when you live in a test market. They will have follow up releases of the product beyond just that blue one I suspect.

So if it never gets fixed, the one thing I need to remember, is to disconnect the joycon whenever I put it in sleep mode? Would it be a big problem if I don't do it while the Switch is in the dock though?

I really enjoy using the d-pad though. Didn't know I had missed it that much.

Someone on reddit is reporting that the Joycon has fried their switch, apparently Hori recognises this is an issue with their Joycons too. I don't know if I'm allowed to post a direct reddit link here but I can do that if need be. Be careful with this thing guys.

Also saw that post. No validation whatsoever, and I really doubt the joycon could pull enough power continuously to do damage like that.

Yeesh. That doesn't sound good.

Linking the Nintendo Switch reddit page is fine btw.

https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSw...hori_dpad_joycon_fried_my_dock_andor_console/

So from my reading it was plugged in and left overnight, and it fucked up either the dock or the switch itself.

That's not great.

I still have one preordered but I'm feeling a lot more cagey about using it. At the very least I'll only leave it plugged in when I'm actually playing on it.

Man this doesn't sound good at all though.

Why don't you guys just buy the wired Hori controller? I did and it's great. (Especially for the sf collection). And the d pad on that comes off so you could possibly attach it when it's portable? Haven't tried yet cause I mainly play on tv.

Different products for different purposes. The Hori one is about having the dpad for portable mode. (Which is also the only mode the joycon works in so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯.)

Because I only play in portable mode. This product is exactly what I want.

Really? This is the first I've seen someone say the dpad on this thing is solid. It's good for 2d fighters?

Did anyone notice that this got delayed? The product pages on amazon used to be mid September (I can't remember the exact date, just that it was mid Sept). Now they're listed as October 2. Has there been any official word about the delay?

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AI0GLJK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_VLIJBbSQW84V7

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AJRN4CE/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_aPIJBbKZTZQT2

Was a bit relieved to see this myself. The fact that prerelease NA models still had the battery drain issue just a couple weeks from release had me doubting that it was actually resolved.

A delay gives me hope it will be fixed in time for release.

Has Hori even said anything after acknowledging the battery drain? It's been a while.

I downloaded an update for the Hori joycon I bought. Not sure what the update does.

My Target put these out early and I bought one yesterday. They only appear to be selling the Zelda model, no Mario model in their system at all. I got the Zelda one and.... I kinda love it. It has a great texture to it and the d-pad feels fantastic IMO. Also, not noticing battery drain so looks like 6.0 did fix it. Only worry I have is that the artwork might eventually fade/rub away with use but no way to know for a while. I'm 50/50 on ordering the Mario model from amazon and returning this one. Just not sure which style I like better. But yeah, overall I'm very pleased with this. Feels great.

Been using the Japanese model on the NES games and Capcom Beat Em Up. It's awesome. Provided you're aware of the limitations, the price and functionality are right.

When I use Hori DPad can I still use motion controls in portable mode? I'd think that motion aiming for example in Doom or Warframe is done with right joy-con and could still work.

Can anyone confirm this?

There are no motion controls with the Hori D-Pad. However, I think the motion controls in portable mode are done with the actual Switch tablet itself.

Oh...that would make more sense. Would you still need the left one in order to perform any motion controls or would the right one just do all the work?
The gyro is located in the right one only, so the left doesn't come into play with motion controls on the Switch.

EDIT: Actually, several mini games in Mario party use motion regardless of which joycon you're using. So I might be wrong. Probably varies from game to game. Breath of the Wild only uses the right joycon for motion aiming, for example.

Ahh gotcha. Okay, thanks for clearing that up.
