Have you guys ever experienced this phenomenon? Have you ever been roaming around outside in a game, and the composition, visuals, and sound effects were so good they actually compelled you to take a deep breath, expecting to smell fresh air, or flowers, or that wonderful "watery" smell you get by rivers or after a new rain?

I remember one warm night at my house as I was reviewing Breath of the Wild. I had the window cracked open, some storms were rolling in, and I had a straight-up inspiring moment in-game. As I was walking through Hyrule Field at sunset, I stopped a moment to listen to the minimal piano that had kicked in, and to watch the wind weaving through the grass around me. At that moment the wind outside in the real world picked up and pushed through my window. I took a deep breath in, and I was fucking transported to Hyrule. It was magical.

I've also had moments like this exploring Skyrim. There's a great sense of vast, mysterious wilderness in that game that I love but, oddly, these "outside" immersive moments always come to me when exploring the towns and cities at night time. The eerie quiet and beautiful music always get to me, and sometimes I want to take a deep breath and smell my surroundings. This happened one night as I was exploring, and Secunda started playing:

So how about you, Era?

Which game managed to create such a believable outdoor ambience and sense of immersion it made you want to literally breathe in and smell the "outside" air? What was the experience like? Can you recreate it whenever you want? Have you ever experienced this in an older / retro game? Am I just a crazy person?

BOTW

Witcher 3

AC Origins

AC Black Flag

Off the top of my head, those are up there for invoking this feeling

Boy, if only Breath of the Wild actually looked like that teaser shot. Instead of the washed out reality it actually was.

Okami is my breath of fresh air still to this day. Primarily because when you first get to a place, it's normally under the affect of a cursed zone. You need to restore the beauty to the land, and when you do... it's awe inspiring.

The responses so far are great, and since it's my thread I'm happy to have responses at all, but I'm interested in specific scenes or settings that literally made you breathe in to try to smell fresh air. Not just great outdoor scenes or your favorite outdoor scenes, but scenes that made you compulsively breathe in.

I know that sounds illogical, but it's happened to me multiple times. Wondering if it's happened to anyone else.

Novigrad. And pretty much everything in W3.

This.

I remember playing on closed headphones while strolling around Skellige isles and completely losing myself in the experience.

What a beautiful game world RED's crafted.

Not sure if anything made me literally take a deep breath, but definitely the closest I got to this almost "lifelike" sensation was while exploring wilderness in TW3, can't get too specific, because the game had a lot of great places like that.

about every single moment in AC Origins. it feels like I stepped into a time machine to a wonderful, lively world.

Skyrim and the Witcher also sell the illusion, but ACO's Egypt /feels/ like the real deal.

Maybe not exactly what you're talking about, but there's a section in The Solus Project where you're trying to power up a massive alien structure and the sense of scale is incredible.

Landing on Skellige had me sitting in my chair for a few minutes listening to the music and stearing from the rocky beach into the advancing sun.

The shrouded forest clearing where the Master Sword rests in Zelda: A Link to the Past. The sun filtering through the trees, the animals hopping into hiding, the light mist. So good.

The opening vista to Hemwick Charnel Lane in Bloodborne. It felt like stepping into a piece of concept art. The Undead Settlement in Dark Souls III a similar feeling, every little plank jutting out from those crumbling buildings appears to be meticulously modeled and hand-placed.
It's something about the sheer level of geometric complexity that we've been seeing in From Software's environments this generation that's just awe-inspiring, at least at a distance.

The first time you get a good look at New Austin in RDR. Just huge and empty and beautiful.

Recently Shadow of the Colossus on ps4 made my jaw drop.

Secunda is what I was going to post. Skyrim is full of the type of moments you're talking about, but this song in particular does it for me. I played this game A LOT last winter on the Switch, mostly at night after the wife and kid were sleeping. That peaceful feeling of the world being asleep and everything being still and calm... it was goosebumps every time. I built Lakeview Manor and sometimes it would happen there while my in-game family was sleeping, as well as my real family. lol

The Shrine of Azura is also particularly gorgeous on a clear night.

No games I've played has wilderness as immersive as Breath of the Wild.

Sure I've played tons of technically more sound games on more powerful systems, but none of them convey the essence of nature immersion like BotW at its best.

BOTW is a good one, but the Zelda game that really did this for me was actually Wind Waker HD. I feel like so many shots of that game could be works of art in and of themselves.

Sailing the ocean, then stopping on a random island to soak up the sun was such a great feeling.

I know a lot of people don't like what the remake did with Wind Waker's art style, but I love it. I actually never really liked the way OG Wind Waker looked.

How do you do this / initiate this? The Switch version is the only version of Skyrim I stuck with at all, and I've never looked up any guides or anything. I didn't even know you could have a family in the game.

Here's the guide specifically for Lakeview, but there are three available houses.

Here's the guide for adopting kids

And marriage works the same way it always did (here's the guide in case you never got married)

Man, thank you for this. DQ11 just came in the mail and I do not have time to get back into Skyrim, but I'm about to.

Haha that's basically my permanent relationship with Skyrim. I'm 20 hours into Octopath right now and really enjoying it, but I kinda want to start a new Skyrim character... Maybe I'll wait for winter.

I think Assassin's Creed Origins is the best at that. One of, if not the, most impressive and breathtaking open world in gaming.

Kingdom Come Deliverance with Apex ReShade mod.

Assassin's Creed Origins is also amazing. Every location is gorgeous, and it's all teeming with life.

Its from the Cursed of Osiris DLC. Unfortunately, you don't spend much time on that planet/location, but the little that you do is breathtaking!

Excellent. I'll definitely check this out once I jump back in with the Forsaken Legendary Collection.

Elder Scrolls games for sure (and Fallout 3). Pretty much all of them have moments like that for me.
Morrowind when I first get to that HUGE city (forget the name).
Oblivion when you first exit the dungeon at the beginning.
Fallout 3 when you first exit the vault.
Skyrim when you get to that town with the Birch (?) trees with their leaves falling, and the time when you first climb the big mountain.

BOTW impressed me with its massive size when I first left the plateau.
