So what is the version to get that is the least screwed up? I have all 3 platforms, and was waiting for one of them to be "finished" before buying.

They all share the same flawed localisation, but it's safe to say that the PS4 version is the one with the lesser amount of technical issues.

to this point, ymmv on the localization. i thought the redone work was pretty good across the board. good characterization and english voice acting. the iffy parts happen during sidequests and npc stuff outside of the main story, which ranges from fine to questionable. there's one line where a character says 'i love her!' about one of the other npcs which seems out of character with the new localization. because it's the original pass, all the character laughter is retained (lots of ha-ha and hmhm, although sahad's 'gah-ha-ha' laugh is pretty consistent with how he acts in the story).

We've put a lot of work into it since launch and now stand by the updated version. Any of the major issues reported at the start of the release have been patched out, though due to the nature of PC development, some issues may occur based on a specific hardware setup. We recommend that you check that all of your drivers have been updated (most of the issues we've received lately have been user-driver based).
Hi! Didn't know anyone at NISA were members here.
Just wanted to say thanks! I played the Switch version and Ys Viii is absolutely one of my favorite RPGs in a really long while!

I hope for the PC port to get a bit more work done to it. Aliasing is rampant (i.e. when you match 1080p display with Medium rendering, which is supposed to be 1080p rendering), anti-aliasing solutions range from poor af to non-existent (the FXAA is an absolute joke and only makes things look even worse, while not everybody can afford to render the game at a higher res than their display res), and the textures have yet to get any sort of filtering. Not to mention the opening movie is out of sync with the music.
Wait, medium is supposed to be native resolution? The only way I get it to look "pretty good" is downsampling from 1440p -> 1080p on "Ultra". (High is "okay", but still kinda noticeable compared to Ultra).
For that matter, what resolution scaling are High and Ultra actually?

I do appreciate the updates but the game still needs a couple of patches. Iclucian Dance has sync issues or the music file for that track is corrupted becaue it keeps skipping in my game (GOG version). Sometimes if you go to the character menu the whole screen gets a green or blue hue. The game slows to a crawl every time stuff like foggy frost in one of the dungeons is rendered. As people here mentioned, FXAA simply doesn't work and makes everything blurry. I didn't experience any crashes though, that's great.

That was before the last round of patches which fixed the crashes (https://steamcommunity.com/app/579180/discussions/2/1692669912390219464/) Game is fully fixed now even the skill slowdown from which the ps4 version still suffers is fixed making the pc version effectively the best version.

Never heard of most of these issues and didn't experience them myself, might be something with your hardware or drivers dunno but as far as i know GOG is also a bit behind patches compared to the steam version again.
I don't use FXAA or DOF though they are always shit and the game supports 4k internal rendering resolution making it useless anyway. As for the music skipping maybe give the high quality music mod a try: https://www.nexusmods.com/ysviii/mods/1

Too many people are still reporting crashes and other issues to this day.
Issues due to "specific hardware setup" and "outdated drivers" do not occur to this extent with other PC ports, including the Ys one that released just last week (not by NISA).
This port may not be as broken as it was at launch, but it's still far from fixed, and I guess we just got the confirmation that it never will be, at least not officially.

Thanks for the in-depth response, I'll follow up with our project manager tomorrow.

Update (10:52am): From my project manager on it:

-Have you updated all the patches on GOG in order?
-In order to improve the performance, we suggest that the user changes the "render mode" to either "low" or "medium" setting. This should help with the overall performance of the game.

As far as I know, Low renders at 720p, Medium at 1080p, High at 1800p (yes, this res is odd, but that's the one it used to be locked at before you could choose the rendering res), and Ultra at 4K.

Would my cousin's son and daughter who are 11 and 9 years old like this game. Also will this game be appropriate for them?

They both love Zelda but found Zelda Breath of Wild hard to beat. Would they like this game or find it too hard?

They both love Zelda Hyrule Warriors and still play it from time to time with Fortnight.

Personally, I am huge fan of Ys series, but I have gotten a chance to play it due to life/work.

PS: Thinking of getting this as a present.

If they found BotW too hard, then this game will also be too hard.
There's a scene in the beginning where Adol sees Laxia naked and she slaps him. Dana's costume is... questionable for kids that young.
I would suggest Splatoon 2.

Fun game tho.

Their son is currently playing fortnight (addictive to it) and has splatoon 2...

Also they have already beaten Zelda Breath of the wild... They just found it hard to beat.

The other stuff about the nudity is concerning... How long is the scene?

Very, very disappointing. Guess I won't be picking up this game until it's massively discounted on PS4. I'd prefer the PC version but not in its current state.

It's in the beginning of that vid.
It's pretty much a standard anime scene lol. That's the only time something like that happens iirc.

I found the scene with Laxia to be rather inoffensive. It's typical Anime trope and rather humorous though that naturally depends on those watching it. I personally wouldn't skip the game for the kids due to this.

The Dana segments have become my favourite parts of the game, after dreading them at first. I finished the
fifth dungeon (magma cave)
and I wonder what's next. It feels like I'm fairly close to the ending with more than 90% exploration done.

And nightmare difficulty was honestly not a big deal despite this being my first Ys. I've been beating virtually every boss on my first try for the past 25 hours. It's easier than Dark Souls 3's DLC by quite a bit, and maybe as hard as the average DaS experience.
Gargantula
was the hardest boss up to this point. Once you're past that, you're good.

It's like saying pokemon games are only hard if you ignore the items
Not quite, Ys goes from allowed to make 3-6 mistakes (total across all your characters) to 40+ mistakes

In a game where stuff is happening every 1.5 - 2 seconds over 2-5 minutes that's a huge ass difference.

People can enjoy the game how ever they want. But if you want an actual hard ass challenge gotta dump the items. No items runs are basically like playing an action rhythm game in the party Ys games

Yeah it's fine for kids and all, but that scene was trash and a reason why Anime tropes are so damn embarrassing.

Got a question about a treasure chest I can't seem to figure out how to get to.

It's in the pirate ship in Hold 1, in a separate area. I can see that there's a doorway to the room but not sure how to get to it

You get adventure gear later down the road that you can use to access the missed treasure chests in the pirate ship.

The game is honestly so fucking good, y'll should be embarrassed for shilling for it so poorly. This game should have Yakuza 0 status by now, and if it wasn't for my own research, I would have probably never heard of it.

I've been binging it like a madman ever since the day I bought it.

Well, that's pretty dumb (didn't they just get shipwrecked like 20 minutes ago -- who's like, "well, ship's fucked, might as well sexily bathe in this lagoon?"). But I can handle just about that much silly anime cheesecake; it's not nearly on the level of Xenoblade 2, which handled its female characters so poorly and pandered so much that it entirely turned me off of the game.

On that note, I'm kind of hoping Ys might fill the Xenoblade-shaped void on my Switch. Would others agree that the above scene is as weeby/pandering as it gets?

Nothing really struck me as fanservice-y as that first scene with Laxia. Like, it's extremely unnecessary, but it could be worse.

Dana always struck me as weird. Her costume would absolutely suggest a fanservice-y character but like... I never got a fanservice-y vibe from her? Or maybe I'm too gay to notice so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Dana is a pretty great character despite the rather suggestive clothing. It's ironic that Laxia, being that uptight for the most part, is the one that would be used in this fanservice-y way.

Thinking about picking it up. Which version should I go for? I have all platforms it's available for.
As of now (nearly at the end on Switch, played a tad more than halfway through on Vita and tried the PS4 version), I'd suggest picking it up on PS4 if you're only going to play on the TV. Don't pick up the Vita version as it's missing some content and runs the worst in terms of framerate. Switch for portable play only, game looks outright ugly on the TV when docked. Don't know about the PC port, seems to be fine by now, though.

Thanks guys, guess I'll go with the Ps4 version then.

I don't think that Dana is a fanservice character, I even think that her clothings are mostly a representation of the ancient culture. All the people during the flashbacks wears something like Dana.

On the other hand, Laxia is a poorly-written character that serves mostly as a fanservice, tsundere trope. There's the story with her father (which is another big trope) but most of her dialogue is kind of embarassing. TBH the only character from the game that I consider great is Dana, all your main party is trope after trope.

I grabbed the game on GOG during the JRPG sale a few days ago, hoping it would be in a presentable state by now, and the "fixed" localization is killing me at times. The highlights so far include an instance of "you're" instead of "your" and "Eleftheria" instead of "Eleutheria". You're localizing a game that is set on an island in a fantasy version of the Aegean Sea and has a party member from a fantasy version of Greece, and you don't have someone who can recognize basic Greek words take a look at terms and given names? Amateurs.

The latest GOG version also has a chance of crashing whenever the game uses a fade out effect to transition between camera angles in cutscenes, unless I leave only one CPU core enabled.
