What's that douche bag with the song about going to a tailgating party with T-Pain and Kanye being played out of Ford F-150s? lol

The only country albums I've ever cared about are Taylor Swift's "Speak Now" and "Red" albums, especially the later - she's honestly much better than the bro country crap you hear on radio.

Kacey is also good like some other posters said, and I genuinely enjoy Sam Hunt's stuff.

But yeah, modern country is garbage, sadly.

Music evolves, so it doesn't bother me country doesn't sound the same as the 70's and 80's. However, you are correct that country music keeps it simple, but that can be said about all popular music rocking the charts or being played on radio.

The only country singers I can listen to are Sturgill Simpson and Jason Isbel. I also like Hank III but haven't kept up with him in years so don't know if he's been problematic lately.

Happy to see Bo Burnham's Panderin' linked multiple times. It really does succinctly sum up "Stadium Country" which is the worst but most popular sub genre of country. If you want quality Country music you have to go back a few decades.

My work has country playing sometimes and it's the same shit over and over and over and it all sounds the same.

Its torture.

This is amazing.

Like, thanks, I'm going to go listen to him now. Plus he has a nice voice.

He's one of my favorite comedians, so glad you liked it. Everyone else who hasn't seen it before too.

When I was student teaching my mentor played country during lunch and prep period, and blasted Garth Brooks for a whole week when the tour came to town. As someone who doesn't really like country it was odd for the same reasons you mentioned.

I remember a conversation I had with him about music once, and he was explaining that he liked country because "it's the only genre of music that talks about just sitting back and having a beer." I was pretty sure he was going to mention driving a truck next.

I like some upbeat country songs like Chicken Fried or Chattahoochee because they have fun corny (and for me nostalgic) lyrics, but I can't stand the slow sappy shit.

[Goofy voice]: "Oh where wer u.... when them terrerists hit them towerrrrs"

etc.

You really got to dig deep through crap country to find okay country, that it's accurate to just say the whole genre sucks.

A lot of it is shitty corporate, pop/rock with a "country twang". Not to dissimilar from most other top 40 formulaic shit these that's come about over the last 15 or so years when recording industry decided to start playing it much safer. I also kind of dislike most country music that's come about though since like the late 80s so. *shrug* Top 40 Country though is close to being as unbearable to listen to for me as Christian Worship music.

Somehow I probably manage to find a way to also blame Nickelback for it.

Growing up in the south country is everywhere from a young age, but I never really liked much of it growing up. There are a few artists here and there... I do love George Straight. Recent country... pretty much all I like is Chris Stapleton.

I don't know that I like any "proper" country, but Kasey Musgraves rocks my world, and I like when the folk artists I enjoy (like First Aid Kit) slip a little to the country side.

OP I don't even listen to country that much to know that this is false. Like these are the type of arguments I made when I was in high school against country and I knew for damn sure I was being disingenuous then. If you don't like country music just say so OP.

Radio station at work is always tuned to country, so I get a ton of that dreadful stuff.

"huntin, fishin, and lovin' every day, I THANK GOD HE MADE ME THIS WAY"

I listen to country and the only song I can think of thats remotely like this is Garth Brooks

Garth is one of the few likeable country personalities in my opinion. Plus, the dude has done a lot of charity over his career and has been a staunch supporter of gay marriage and referenced it in "We Shall be Free"

I typically despise country music, but I can't help but like Garth.

There's a lot of DAMN good country out there right now.

Sturgill was already tossed out so I'll rec these dudes.

I LOVE both of these artists, also love Jason Isbell, American Aquarium and a lot of bands you aren't going to hear on any radio stations outside of Texas, which is really sad! If you haven't listened to either of these, check them out! Got tix for a NYE show with Tyler Childers. Should be a blast!

FM country or stadium country is awful. You're going to get someone coming into this thread saying "I don't know, I like all that other country, but I don't think there's anything wrong with listening to a little bit of Eric Church and rolling down the windows with my girl and... etc." but fuck it. Popular country has been completely overtaken by a lazy pop sound which steals from the pool of rejected elements from other genres.

If you actually want some decent country acts...
Sturgill Simpson is basically the modern answer to Waylon Jennings.
Tyler Childers has a haunting voice and can do interesting things with some of the typical themes and sounds of traditional country.
Punch Brothers are some of the most technically impressive artists of all time. Their classical music inspiration has led many to say "That's not country, that's folk," but whatever. It's fucking bluegrass.
Trampled by Turtles and Old Crow Medicine Show are similar bluegrass-oriented bands.
Drive-By Truckers are some of the more socially and politically aware acts in the business. Their former lead vocalist Jason Isbell is currently experiencing an amazing solo career.
Justin Townes Earle is the son of Steve Earle and named after Townes Van Zandt; he was basically destined for country.
The Carolina Chocolate Drops are an oldtime folk and bluegrass-inspired band with a heavy focus on black spirituals for their sound.
Luke Bell sounds like he's ripped from a 60s country record.
Margo Price seems to be following in the footsteps of Loretta Lynn and Emmylou Harris.
The Dead South offer a new twist on bluegrass that really does feel like a modern evolution of the sub-genre.

Add some American Aquarium to this list!

I don't mind radio country. It is what it is: pop music with a southern drawl talking about trucks and girls with blue jeans.

it is pop music, just like the rest of the pop music you hear on the radio, most of it is corporate and incredibly derivative.

I like spooky, folksy story-telling style country, but maybe that's too close to the folk side so maybe it doesn't really count.
Beercan pickup truck country is straight up pandering idiocy that apparently most of its audience somehow doesn't see through.

Yep. This sentence would work equally well talking about modern pop, hip-hop, rock or any other heavily commercialized music. It's all obviously engineered to sound the same and it all just blends into itself.

The stuff that just mashes EDM and hip-hop into country is so super fucking awful though. It's not even remotely listenable

The hall across the room
Lived in the south for over 20 years
People who mention Kacey Musgraves and Sam Hunt (who honestly is the Bruno Mars of country) you have great taste
I will always support the middle finger Nashville crowd who make music themselves
The constant phrase I hear in all popular country today is turn the radio on
Everything is about the radio
Which seems laughable to me
Popular country music refelcts how a generation who controlled media is struggling to hold on (the radio industry as a whole)
It's a machine that spits out clones who have a moment and then play country fairs after the next thing comes along
Big fan of the mid 90's alternative country movement
Wilco
Whiskey town

I was subjected to this crap in an Uber ride this morning:

Some choice lyrics:
It's two tickets to a concert, it's a Daytona airbrush t-shirt
Wonderin' who's gonna kiss who first, you know what I'm talkin' about
Hey baby what you doin' tonight?
It's butterflies and Bud Lights
Under the stars and on the stripes of a beach towel in a spring break town
It's playin' in the night air, through the speakers all night long
Couple kids just livin' that American country love song
Well it's "Chris loves Jenny" on a license plate
It's daddy gettin' mad 'cause you came home late
It's one last kiss in the driveway
Hey radio DJ, can you play that song that she loves
So I can turn it up, and maybe turn her on
An American country love song

And then "Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy" came on which has aged like fine horse shit
