Has anyone that has been playing on Arena have games where you just auto-lose? I'm not talking about matches where you have a connection error, you can't re-establish a connection, and the game boots you. For an example, I was playing against a Fraying Sanity deck that milled my whole deck on my opponent's turn, and the game made me auto-lose on the end of their turn. I know it wasn't during my draw step because I had responses on my upkeep that would have won me the game.

This has happened a few times in the last few days, and it is especially frustrating when it happens during drafts.

Rudys rabid thoughts on the Commander 2018 outcry from the community

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lohkpPUKOQ&t=1s

I agree with him. Yes this years product is weaker than previous years but from a price point of view historically Commander products have always gone up in value. Even Stalwart Unity from Commander 2016 which people didn't gravitate towards is now the most expensive Commander 2016 product after the Breed Lethality reprint. Some of the new cards are actually really good even though the existing reprints are bulk. Would not surprise me in 12-18 months from now Commander 2018 is $200 for all 4 decks.

They're a bit clumsy and unfocused, and I'm not really fond of planeswalkers as commanders, nor do I think any of these planeswalkers are particularly compelling in that role, or that any of these decks are particularly well-designed to deal with the inherent challenges of having a planeswalker for your commander (ie, everyone hitting it in the fucking face).

There are a couple of decent "sub" commanders but at least as many total head-scratchers. What do the spider general and fixed Karona have to do with Jund Lands? What does Mini-Lage have to do with enchantments? I mean they're supposed to at least be suggestive of other possible directions to take the decks, but these are some pretty well-trodden archetypes that aren't going to pivot anywhere near as well as previous decks, so it just feels more like they're a B-team of prospective commanders who got created before they settled on the deck themes for the year and just stuck into whichever deck had the necessary colors.

I've never seen anything like that. Did you have a stop on your upkeep, or some other trigger that would have given you a chance to respond? Without a trigger on the stack, the game doesn't give you the option to do anything until your first main phase. I'd guess that what you're seeing is just an animation bug where you're dying because you tried to draw at the start of your turn, but the phase tracker didn't update before your head exploded.

For sure, these decks feel more like Commander 2013 with the unfocused decks and lackluster reprints.

I just ordered all the singles I was interested in from the nearest Canadian shop and ended up spending less for everything all said and done than if I bought one deck.

I didn't realize they upped the MSRP. Makes sense considering how much past commander products were selling through third parties. Wizards wants dat slice too.

So wait, the game will give me priority to pop my bomat courier during every other step and phase, but not on my upkeep unless I put in a stop? That seems incredibly counter intuitive and poor design if so.

It also doesn't explain games like the one I had a few days ago where I just blew up at the end of turn 3 no explanation or warning. Just passed turn and immediately exploded.

Also since we are all chipping in our two cents about the commander product: This is the first time I will not be buying one of the decks. As someone who primarily plays commander this period of time often feels like my Magic Christmas, and it saddens me that it looks like the product really didn't come together in a satisfactory way. That being said, I'm still planning to buy my fair share of singles, and I'm excited to brew with Aminatou, the leviathen, and the sphinx.

I'm getting the artifact deck and combining it with my soon to rotate Jhoira brawl deck that I just put together to make my first EDH deck. Seems to be a solid way forward, even if it's not massively exciting like what I've heard about from the decks in previous years.

So which one should you definitely reserve just by card value?

EDIT: Subjective Reality I would guess after looking at the decklists.

The value gain over time has more to do with which of these decks have cards that turn out to be extremely desirable later down the line than their perceived card value right now, so it's really just a matter of speculating about which ones you guess will become valuable. Usually, it's commanders that are either way more useful in other decks than the one they came with or cards that just find their way into every commander deck of the appropriate colors.

Off-the-cuff, I'd say Arixmethes and the artifact commander that copies abilities are likely to gain value because the first is an interesting build-around with potential to just show up in tons of decks in the 99, and the second looks like it's going to get used to do some real degenerate bullshit. None of the cards really strike me as being must-have general utility cards the way Teferi's Protection was, but I guess the closest would be Retrofitter Foundry or an outside chance on Myth Unbound?

I think Ever-Watching Threshold is all upside and climbs steadily.

What an atrocious name, though.

Hmmmmm... I passed my turn and tabbed out and heard the kill a player sound, my opponent had just attacked and killed me even though I didn't press enter or pass priority once. Is there a card in M19 on green/red that would cause that? Some kind of creatures can't block spell?

FYI I'm looking to sell a complete Modern Jund deck (I can part it out for the most part as well). PM if interested - it's basically the normal stuff, e.g. Confidants, Goyfs, Lilis, etc.

Getting a set of new teeth is expensive =(

What does this counterfeiting situation mean long term
If counterfeiters can reliably make copies of new cards, that can place a harder limit on the cost of cards and potentially make Wizards and LGSs lose a lot of money. However, there is an argument to make that the damage can't be that great, especially since counterfeiters can't print cards at the scale of Wizards itself.

For older cards, counterfeits will have a pretty big effect, particularly reserve list cards.

I was told older cards are hard to counterfeit because of the rosette patterns, especially on cards such as Black Lotus.

Even if they are counterfeit, it's hard to tell how good they really are without feeling them.

I went to my very first Standard Showdown yesterday!
I went 0-3, losing every one of my games, but I won two friendlies at least :)

I also pulled a Hazoret in my Standard Showdown pack, so I think it was time well spent!

Chronicle of Bolas: A Familiar Stranger
Kate Elliott

When Yasova and the twins reach Ugin's grave at last, they find a mysterious—and potentially deadly—stranger awaiting their arrival.

* They reach Ugin's grave. There should be a hunting party camped there, but they aren't responding.
* While Fec the orc investigates, Yasova takes the twins to a secret area with hidden Temur artifacts and stories. She worries she won't have an opportunity to pass on this knowledge again.
* Naiva is jealous of how the artifacts whisper stories to Baishya and not her.
* They go into a chamber that allows them to spy on the cave where the hunting party is supposed to be camping.

* Fec enters the cave, and it's empty except for a woman who claims everyone died to disease. Fec keeps his distance out of caution. The woman is in late stage pregnancy and wishes to speak to Yasova. She initially reacts with confusion when Fec asks if this is her first. Fec tells her to stay put, and he leaves.
* Yasova points out that the woman resembles one of their relatives, but it's clearly someone else taking her form. Naiva is surprised such magic exists. Yasova says she will inspect the woman more closely, but the twins have to stay there. She makes clear she suspects this is Bolas, then leaves.
* Baishya is being contacted by Ugin, and leaves regardless, with Naiva following.
* They go to Ugin's tomb and find a way in, so Baishya goes inside. Naiva gets a strong urge to leave her, so Yasova will love her more, but she fights it back and follows after her.

* Inside, they have visions.
* Ugin arrives on Tarkir and spends some time there. He speaks to the shamans there of his journey, and they ascribe to him the creation of the world, even though he didn't do that.
* He briefly returns to Dominaria (called as such here) but upon seeing human armies bearing banners with Bolas's horns, he leaves again.
* For years--later revealed to be four to five thousand years--he wanders the planes, including Lorwyn and an Alara that's whole. His thoughts go back to Bolas, though, and he decides to check in again.

* On Jamuraa, the armies of Arcades and Bolas clash. Ugin gets between them and forces them to stop. As an old school planeswalker, he's far more powerful than them, and furthermore, he has mastered all five colors of magic, transcending them. Arcades uses this chance to retreat.
* Bolas is surprised, having thought he died. He shows Ugin around his lands, paying little heed to the destruction around them.
* Bolas gloats about how his empire stretches beyond what either of them imagined was the size of the world, but Ugin mocks the insignificance of it compared to the Multiverse.
* Ugin explains what he learned, and Bolas is annoyed he waited thousands of years to tell him this. Ugin tries to explain he how planeswalks, but he can't, so Bolas accuses him of lying.
* Ugin planeswalks away.

* Naiva breaks out of the trance, which her sister is still in.
* She hears noises outside and thus comes out with her spear. Yasova is there and Naiva explains the situation.
* Yasova concludes she must join Baishya in her trance and goes inside the tomb. She tells Naiva to join the others at the secret Temur area.
* Naiva hides the entrance and starts to leave, but then the pregnant woman appears. Despite her pregnancy, she moves freely. Naiva notices she is just barely floating above the ground.
* After confronting her with this information, the woman transforms into Bolas. He had to check Ugin again, and sees that he indeed isn't dead. He asks Naiva to help kill him for good.

Update on my experience with Arena: I mean, I guess I did spend like $200 on Arena (so I was never locked into a crazy grind to play a good deck) but it does feel like I have a lot of decks and aren't far away from a lot of them based on just what I have. In that sense, it's done a marvelous job not giving me any incentive to fire up MTGO - I mostly just like Standard and Arena does a great job scratching that itch.

I started off doing UW control, but I'm not much a counterspell guy, so I also have UG Merfolk, a Planeswalker Teferi Oath deck, and a "Grixis" Dragons deck (which is basically just Bolas and Chandra with some Glorybringers and Verix Bladewings, etc. Sometimes I'll bust out my BG Saprolings deck just because I giggle like a girl when I get Driven // Despair to do good work.

The thing that's going to make or break this program in my opinion is whether Ravnica III's standard is actually good. As for the economy, I'm less down on it than other people are, but that's because I dumped in the money and as a result have a lot of cards. But that said, I hink that the experience with Kaladesh's release on Arena should be instructive: a lot of decks in Arena only are around and get played in a bunch of rooms just because WOTC gave us a million copies of Walking Ballista/Chandra/etc. I think they should keep doing that going forward - e.g. when they game comes out of Beta for (presumably) Ravnica III, they should do something similar with Ixalan block - give us lots of copies of the good cards for those sets so new players can feel like they have something competitive or can build towards something competitive quickly. Like, if players start off with a bunch of copies of Vraska, Relic Seeker or something, that's going to get them much more excited than if they just have stone cold nothing. Another option is to keep giving out the singleton copies of full older sets (like they did for KLD and AER) and keep Singleton up year round, so new players feel like they can immediately build competitive decks and individual pack rewards have a lot of meaning.

Another tweak they need to do is make Quick Constructed individual card rewards heavily biased in favor of providing you with rare lands. They can't keep being a wildcard sink.

I think the biggest issue with Arena's economy is on-boarding. When you're first starting out, getting to a solid deck takes a bit too long since you need 5 sets worth of cards. The rate of acquiring cards for a single set release is fine, I think. Especially if you're halfway decent and do events a bunch. I put in $100 when they first let you start putting in money and I've done maybe 40 or so drafts and still have more than half of what I started with in gems.

Bought one of those six booster cubes from Target and ended up pulling a Breeding Pool from the Gatecrash pack, a foil token and a fullart land from the Unglued pack, a blue rare with its own foil version out of the other Gatecrash pack and the Embalmer's Tools I need for my Sedris EDH deck. :D

Their new new player thing is pretty good, I think. You start with 5 mono-color decks with at least some decent rares in them. You get a queue of 30 extra dailies that end up giving you some gold, 10 packs, and 10 dual-color decks with quite a few desirables in them, including 1 rare land each. You're going to be pretty set for Singleton right after starting and probably not too far off from an okay constructed deck.

Brawl night tonight at my LGS. I finally have a Jhoira artifact deck that seems like it's ready. It's pretty combo heavy and it's my first time playing it so I hope I don't completely lose control of what I'm doing.

why the fuck is Rich Hagon acting like the best teams have some insane advantage by virtue of being super amazingly good

A 60% winrate at Pro Tours is already unsustainable - it's not super insane that Owen Turtlewold is 3-3.
