General Information:
Chasm is an action-adventure game in which you play a new recruit undertaking your first mission for the Guildean Kingdom. Thrilled to prove your worth as a knight, you track strange rumors that a mine vital to the Kingdom has been shut down. But what you discover in the mining town is worse than you imagined: The townspeople have disappeared, kidnapped by supernatural creatures emerging from the depths.

Honor-bound to solve the mystery and restore peace to the Kingdom, you embark upon an epic adventure, with deadly battles against cunning monsters, exploration of ancient catacombs and castles, and powerful new equipment hidden at every turn. Though the overall story is the same for all players, your hero's journey will be unique: each of the rooms has been hand-designed, and behind the scenes Chasm stitches these rooms together into a one-of-a-kind world map that will be your own.

Chasm takes equal inspiration from hack 'n slash dungeon crawlers and Metroidvania-style platformers

  • Battle massive bosses and discover new abilities to reach previously inaccessible areas

To reiterate my brief impression of the PC version from the previous thread: it's super good.

It is essentially Symphony of the Night with randomly generated maps. The pixel art is beautiful with very smooth animation (and a very well executed CRT filter that I am never turning off), controls are spot on, exploring and combat are very satisfying. The soundtrack is excellent so far; instead of the expected chiptunes you get some lovely acoustic guitar. And even in my short run last night I found multiple spots where I needed a metroidvania-style ability (double jump, and maybe some kind of digging ability) to get to goodies just out of reach. Fans of Castlevania and Super Metroid (or more recently, the excellent Axiom Verge) should jump on this game immediately.

I can't wait to put some serious time into this (if I can tear myself away from No Man's Sky). If this first impression holds Chasm will be pure joy to play.

I want to buy all of them, and I eventually will, but I only have time for one right now. If you had to choose between Chasm, Dead Cells and Death's Gambit, which one would it be?

The
six massive procedurally-assembled areas
is what is stopping me, im kind of tired of the random generated world. I started playing Steamworld Dig 2 and really like that the world is already created and not random.

Each room is handcrafted but the map layout is changed from game to game. I still prefer a wholly handcrafted experience, but I think this is a lot better than a world that is 100% procedurally generated.

Doesn't seem to be a midnight release in Aus :(

Will have to wait for when the US store updates I guess.

This is excellent to hear! 2 Questions:

1. Is there a leveling/experience system in Chasm? Or is it just based on equipment?

2. What is the difficulty like?

Haven't played enough to comment on difficulty yet. And it has experience and leveling, just like SoTN, in addition to a full equipment system.

Sorry, I've just seen the trailer and don't know anything about this title but...from game to game as in user to user or every time you die?

I really love the look of this but yeah, that aspect is also putting me off completely right now especially with Death's Gambit coming out shortly as well. I'm basically going to pick one of the Metroidvania Month's releases and that'll be it for a while.

Edit: Nevermind, here's a very detailed description from another thread on the subject of Chasm:

4 new indie Metroidvania titles are coming next month: which one will you get?

In this video, the dev said that if you want you can lock the map/world and it will stay the same until the end

Why isn't in on the EU PSN store for pre-order yet? It's on the US store.

Do we have confirmation it's actually hitting EU tomorrow? I can't find it mentioned on the Playstation EU blog either. I hate the regional store nonsense on PSN :(

Either way, day one, even if I have to load up my US PSN account to get it!

A game with randomly generated levels that's not a roguelike? In this decade? I didn't know such a thing was possible.

I honestly though this one had gone the way of failed Kickstarter for a while. I was thrilled when news that the game was done dropped! Gonna go home and take a nap to play at midnight for sure.

The KS only gave the option for US keys so it seems like it's not coming out in EU yet.

Edit: nevermind, this is wrong

Getting this on Steam! I remember seeing pics of this a long while back and it's been on my Steam wishlist for at least a year or two.

Looks fantastic.

Nice OT! I finished the gameearlier this week after about 12h. Enjoyed it quite a bit and definitely think it delivered on the Kickstarter promises. There's still a few aspects that could use touch-ups, but the devs aren't abandoning the game so I'm sure it'll only get better with time. Will probably look to do a second playthrough down the line.

Love the artstyle but proc-gen stuff always rubs me the wrong way. Can anyone who played through this comment on how well designed the levels felt compared to it's non-proc-gen counterparts?

Same here, it's a shame everyone is too lazy to craft a very well levels anymore, they just leave it up to the proc-gen stuff under the guise of "replayability" or other nonsense, it's like they don't realize what made Metroid's great was the excellent map design.

I've been looking forward to this game for years. I'd prefer it to be hand crafted, but I'll go in with an open mind and tempered expectations.

There's nothing wrong with procedurally generated levels, they can add a tremendous amount of replayability. The thing is it needs to be done really well, like anything else.
Spelunky, Enter The Gungeon and Binding of Isaac are amazing games with generated levels and content, that you can practically play forever.

I'd wager it's a lot more work to create a system that generates good levels than just making a normal linear set of maps once.

People need to understand that most of these rooms are handcrafted to begin with. The only thing procedural is what loot you get and how they're connected.
