My Nexus 6 is falling apart (random shutdowns, battery gives me less than one hour SoT, refuses to charge ocassionally until I reboot) and I might need a quick-fix cheap phone.

I was playing with a Moto E5 Plus at Best Buy yesterday and I was surprised at how nice the build quality is. Budget phones have sure come a long way. The display looked nice enough that it fooled me into thinking it was 1080p (I'm still not sure; I was literally holding it side to side next to the E4 Plus and it looked much sharper). The 5000mAh battery is pretty tempting.

I'm just worried about how shitty the SD425 on that phone is and how much of a downgrade it is compared my Nexus 6. I don't need flagship specs but I couldn't deal with a slow phone at this point.

Ridiculous notch. Also still coming with 4gb ram
I like how from the look of the photo the notch is empty above where the cameras and speaker are like it could have been smaller but instead here's all this wasted space.

Goddammit Google. My Pixel XL's battery is starting to fall apart and I'll be ready to upgrade right when the Pixel 3 is out, but that notch + chin situation is out of control. I appreciate stereo speakers and it's something I've been looking forward to upgrading to, but this is just ridiculous.

Both chin and notch are larger than others have them, guess those stereo speakers were really worth it?

They're not. Whenever it's socially acceptable to blast something out of your front-facing stereo speakers (e.g. not in public), there's most likely something available around (sound bar, wireless speakers, laptop...) that can do the work much better. Only use case I find is playing music games like Cytus where it's extremely easy to muffle the top/bottom speakers with your palm so even playing alone at home headphones are mandatory.

How can a company be so tone-deaf as to what their customers would like out of their next phone? All they had to do was copy Samsung's screen design more or less. Slim bezels. That's it. They already have superior stock Android. Good Christ, Google. My only choices are Note 9 and the next Galaxy S phone now.

I'm in the same boat. My Pixel XL battery has been complete shit for the last couple of months.

Is the Samsung design what their customers want? Is it preferable to have a useless top bezel over a notch that you can optionally "hide" in the settings so you can have appearance of a top bezel, but still have the benefit of having the extra space of the status bar in that place?

I don't most customers actually prefer a top bezel, I certainly don't, just extra height on a phone I can do without.

Most people that have phones with notches don't seem to be minding them, so I'm not entirely sure that it's the case that people prefer bezels.

Better even would be totally bezel-less, but until we're there, a notch solution so you have done extra screenspace for icons, a clock and battery percentage is just fine by me.

Well isn't Samsung the sales leader when it comes to Android phones? So it is what consumers probably want in this space?

And hell, the Samsung top bezel is smaller than that notch anyway.

You are cutting into screen real estate anyhow, so it doesn't matter either way, at that point. Why not have a symmetrically-designed screen on the phone itself?

Unless we know why Samsung is the sales leader, this doesn't tell us that much about anything.

Their marketing is a huge factor. The fact that for many people Samsung is the only phone they will buy, because they think the choice is either Samsung or Apple, or just because it's the devil they know. All contributing factors.

If Samsung had two almost identical models, one bezel, one notch, that would be the only realistic way to make a comparison here. But since Samsung buyers can only go bezel, it tells us nothing about that.

Notch means winning screen space by eliminating the status bar from the main screen. That's the big pro of having it .

Honestly, I barely even use the speakers on my phone, to begin with, let alone using them enough to justify front-facing stereo speakers. I do not see the audience that is targetted at. I mean, you have YouTuber's like MKBHD constantly talking about how much they love front-facing speakers as a feature, but I cannot imagine what he'd use them for when he certainly has access to portable speakers, headphones and all that jazz.

But if notches were something to be desired, surely it would have moved the needle somewhat? I'm sure users that have a notch on their phone are fine with it as they surely looked at it before buying it to make sure of it.

I personally don't know how people are liking it, because I've yet to see a person with an Android phone with a notch in the wild.

I'm lying in bed right now and very comfy, watching videos and playing SMT. Not worth me going to get headphones but I wish it sounded better and makes me miss my Nexus 6.

How many notch phones are for sale and readily available at this point? Do you know many people who buy non-Samsung Android flagships regularly?

Give it a while longer, we are only at the very start of notch Android phones appearing in the market.

With the amount of media people consume on their phone these days it's no surprise people want better speakers. There's plenty of occasions where you want to watch or listen to something but don't have headphones on you. Obviously not in noisy environments or where you'll be disturbing others.

Front facing speakers are amazing but I don't think we will be seeing them much. I miss the feature on my HTC M7/M8. The bare minimum should be stereo sound though. The mono speaker on my S7 was absolute rubbish and the S9's stereo ones are already a massive upgrade.

Anyone care to share thoughts on the Huawei Mate SE? About 6 months ago I bought a Moto g5 Plus and, like an idiot, bought it refurbed. It's been working pretty well, but the past 4 months or so ago my screen just goes black when I receive or make a call. This is a dealbreaker, as I have to make a lot of calls for work. I was able to use Viber for a while to make calls just fine but now it is doing it too. Really, this is the ONLY freaking problem with this refurbed phone, which is a shame.

Anywho, I'm gonna pick up a new phone in a few weeks so I'm looking for the best Android phone for $250 or under, as I want to own it outright, and I'll be using the T-Mobile network. The thing that really seems like a necessity to me is 4Gb of RAM, which knocks out a lot of options at that price point.

Ironic that the original Apple "copiers" Samsung, are one of the only big Android players in the market not following Apple in screen design.

Because they most likely can see the writing on the wall that the notch will no longer be used 2-3 years from now. They may even be the first to have placed all of the sensors and camera under the screen.

Yeah they are differentiating where it matters. No notch, headphone jack, less garbage skin, SD card slot. And they still aren't setting the world on fire. Neither is the X so I guess it's just the sign of a more mature phone market

For my last phone I wanted one with an SD card slot, no notch, headphone jack and stereo speakers. So the S9 won by default.

Now if only Samsung would learn to get a in-screen, fingerprint scanner/reader on the front of the phone instead of always putting the fingerprint scanner on the back.

lol looks like my OG small Pixel is gonna get a few more months of use than originally expected. Hopefully the battery holds up.

I want to see the Pixel3 non XL first though. everything has been XL leaks.

All they had to do was just use the Pixel 2 design with maybe smaller bezels, and upgraded the specs to 2018 specs, minor improvement of that amazing camera, add some features such as wireless charging and they would have had a winner.

Absolutely hideous IMO

I hope this phone tanks.

Can't wait to see what Samsung has in store for the S10, my S6 Edge is getting really long in the tooth.

I watch Youtube videos on my phone while doing mundane tasks like brushing my teeth, I would definitely appreciate a phone with awesome front facing speakers.

What is the chin's reason?, I mean, wouldn't be better to use this space on the top, including the camera, speaker, proximity sensor... And everyting else screen?
It's probably there because it would otherwise be expensive to go no-chin. Apple's method with the iPhone X to virtually eliminate the chin isn't cheap to manufacture.

I live in a city and ride public transportation often. I would be fine with a phone with no speakers and only headphone jack support for sound. People are fucking trash and inconsiderate of others.

The chin hosts the logic board of the screen. Apparently (and IIRC, there has been a lot of bullshit discussion around) there's some kind of patent done by Apple where they fold the screen over at the bottom using curved panels so the logic board is below the screen following the 180º fold and that's why they can go edge to edge without a chin at the bottom.

Edit: or what LostMyNarbles said: not a patent but just ridiculously expensive to manufacture.

Just a couple of lines from the last post on Android Development blog:

https://android-developers.googleblog.com/2018/07/supporting-display-cutouts-on-edge-to.html
In portrait orientation, with no special flags set, the status bar must extend to at least the height of the cutout.

In fullscreen or landscape orientation, the entire cutout area must be letterboxed.

So basically Google just negated (and probably even regressed) any real estate gain of going 19:9 with the xboxhueg notch over 18:9 with no notches by forcing an obnoxiously wide status bar, which becomes dead space whenever any app needs/wants to go full screen.

Makes sense. Notch is generally just useful for notifications area which isn't on the side in landscape
