Via Vice:

In a world where movie theater attendance has slumped to a 25-year low, more people are watching movie trailers than ever before.

These promos are "that one form of advertising that you actually want more of," explains Jon Penn, CEO of the National Research Group. And thanks to an increase in online availability, they're also easier to find, watch, rewatch, analyze and share theories about.

This trailer boom has lead to an increase in the number of trailers being cut and a robust job market for professional trailer makers. More work can mean more competition, too, as a studio will often hire several vendors to work on the same trailer, picking their favorite as the face of their film's campaign. That means trailer makers are constantly one-upping each other to be the most eye-catching and innovative of the bunch.

"We're constantly hustling," says Carrie Gormley, president of Theatrical Advertising at Create Advertising, one of over 100 "trailer houses" operating today.

It's having an effect on the milieu. Trailer industry mogul Mark Woollen says that these days, "trailers have become their own form of entertainment" that can be enjoyed "the same way they listen to a song."

In fact, there are now premieres, critics, and even a version of the Academy Awards, called The Golden Trailer Awards, focused solely on trailers.

VICE News attended the ceremony to find out what it takes to craft two minutes that will make you laugh, cry — and maybe even cough up $15 for a movie ticket.

I don't mind so much when a trailer uses footage that doesn't end up in the film, for example. But when they deliberately mislead you as to what kind of film it is, it does bother.

Bumper. So that is the name of the enemy >=/

And damn, googled the Golden Trailer Awards and .... they give a LOT of awards

2018
19th Golden Trailer Award ceremony was held in 2018, the winners are listed as followed:[21]

edit :

The Golden Fleece award is a highly prized award. It honors a GREAT trailer for a not so great film. Historically it is one of the categories that receives the most press and is a favorite of trailer creators and fans alike!

Maybe I'm no fun, but this is why trailers don't really "wow" me as much as they used to. I'm starting to notice all of these common themes in trailers, and now I feel like once you've seen one trailer, you've seen them all. I really watch them as an explanation as to what the movie is about and if it doesn't tell me that, I'm over it.

It's cool to learn about all of these tricks the use to "hook" you, but I would rather them start doing something different.

That's really interesting. I assumed with how predictable trailers are that the studios were responsible for pumping them out and I'd never have guessed that there's an entire industry behind them. I do find it funny and relatable though that one of the biggest industry players prefers not seeing them.

Note, sometimes the trailer music production companies have entire albums you can pick and choose from. Two Steps From Hell is one. Another is Audiomachine, who did the trailer music for Prometheus and Infinity War.

They then take those base versions and tailor them to however the studios want the trailers to sound.

It's interesting how much trailer instruments are electronically buffed to sound punchier than what usually plays in movies.

  1. Needs Somber music
  2. Breaks by bass drop with audio distortion
  3. one more zinger at the end

The captain America winter soldier trailers are masterpieces in misdirection. Absolutely love they show a different movie so when you see the real thing you are blown away by every plot twist.

Am I missing something? Just watched the trailer now and the story beats of the trailer seem to present a jaded Captain America pushing back against his superiors including a morally dubious Robert Redford, potentially even going rogue (it shows the elevator scene where he's fighting his own team members) and then uncovering secrets at play, which is pretty much exactly what happens in the film itself. It even shows the carrier fight climax. I mean, no, it doesn't reveal the 1-2 twists late in the film, but it's also not showing a 'different movie' and makes no effort to present the structure or characters of the film as anything other than what they are in the actual film.

Isn't this what 8/10 film trailers do?

I love movies but I have to admit I often enjoy trailers more than movies. I love a good movie trailer (same applies to games actually).

I don't know what's worse, trailers that give away everything or ones that outright lie to you.

The ones that give away everything for sure.

I don't know what bullshit marketing trends Hollywood is looking at but I absolutely hate it that trailers these days are ruining every major twist in a story, show shots/scenes of the movie's CLIMAX, in many cases like Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom literally the last line/monologue of the movie is prominently featured in the trailers.

Like, why the fuck am I watching. Every time I see the movie's best shot during the ending/climax and I realize that's a shot from a trailer I feel cheated out of my time/money.

The MI:6 trailer more or less follows the typical formula but subverts it a bit. Personally, of all the trailers in this style I think this is one of the best recent ones.

I refuse completely to watch any trailer for a movie I want to see.

They're basically quick spoilers of the entire thing so why would I bother with that shit. It sucks.

The new Godzilla trailer is one of the best I've seen in years. I'm looking forward to seeing how different the stuff in that is compared to the final film.

So many trailers for decent movies convince me not to see them by giving away the whole plot.
