Animal Crossing seems like a huge time waster but so charming at the same time. I kind of enjoyed it on the DS, is New Leaf much better?

Damn, I now want a NES/SNES mini, Switch, 3DS and Wii U (for GBA games). I'm getting way nostalgic.

So I guess this thread is sticking around

Bloodborne - The Game of the Generation.

Hollow Knight - The best Metroidvania ever, dethroning Super Metroid.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Not as good as DKC2, but it's still comparable and that's enough.

Super Mario Odyssey - The game that made Mario cool again.

NieR - A brilliant gem of a game that critics didn't understand.

NieR Automata - Maybe not up to snuff to its predecessor from a story perspective, but the gameplay is awesome.

Tales of Vesperia - A great RPG filled to the brim with content, with a likeable cast and solid gameplay.

Metal Gear Rising Revengeance - The true form of Metal Gear, with the camp dialed up to the nth degree.

Undertale - A funny, heartwarming, sometimes nightmarish game with genius meta commentary.

DOOM - I used to think I hated First Person Shooters, turns out I've just been playing the wrong ones.

New Leaf is ridiculously before than everything that came before (or after, for that matter).

So number 1 would be Trails in the Sky SC. It's my new favourite series.

Number 2 is Hollow Knight. It's a modern classic in the metroidvania genre.

Then there's Portal 2. Just funny with some ingenious puzzles.

Valkyria Chronicles, Bastion and Pokemon Super Mystery Dungeon round out 4, 5 and 6. Pokemon might seen like a strange choice but it's there because my cat passed away as I was playing that game It helped me cope with the loss.

Number 7 is OneShot. A shame that it's not more recognised.

8 would be Fantasy Life. Put a lot of fun hours into this game.

9 and 10 are difficult choices but I'll go with Journey and finally The Last Guardian. Both of which I won't ever play again and both of which left me profoundly emotional.

I live in a giant bucket.
I notice a lack of Pikmin 3 in this thread, so I guess it wasn't that great after all? I'm pretty sure that Pikmin 2 would be in many top 10 lists of the 2000s.

I consider it Wii U's masterpiece. From my experience, most everyone who's played it loves it. I just wish Bingo Battle had at least CPU opponents.

To answer your other question about New Leaf, I also consider that to be possibly 3DS's best game. Best AC game by far.

  • Fallout: New Vegas - This is one of my strongest roleplaying experiences because of the options and dialogue system allow you to shape the protagonist in ways other games don't. New Vegas' open world is also underappreciated; the Mojave was a well designed and immersive setting.
  • Batman: Arkham Knight - My favorite comic book game. I've beaten it three times and will probably play through it again in the future.
  • Mass Effect 2 - It wasn't as good as the first game, but the way it focuses on character interactions and exploring companions puts it above most games.
  • Skyrim - The combat and questlines were disappointing, but even with that, Skyrim was a great game for exploration and roleplaying different characters. Dawnguard & Dragonborn were two fine expansions, too.
  • Dragon's Dogma - One of my favorite combat systems in any game, and it has an exceptionally deep character creator where things like height and weight dictate the way your character plays. NPCs and dialogue are very limited, but everything else is solid. Played it to death on PS3 and then again on PS4.
  • Assassin's Creed Unity - I was amazed at how much of a jump Unity was from the previous games. The combat, visuals, open world, mission design, and parkour were leaps and bounds better than what I was used to in Assassin's Creed. It was like a next gen leap of the first game. The Helix Rifts and Murder Mysteries were some of the best side missions in the series. Not only that, it had an intriguing story, a great protagonist in Arno, and good side characters. The Dead Kings DLC was also great.
  • Tomb Raider - A memorable open-linear experience with exceptional shooting mechanics, exploration, collectibles that enhance the setting, solid storytelling and setpieces, and a great blend of survival-horror elements. I miss how simple the crafting was in this game compared to the sequels. Crystal Dynamics did a fantastic job at reinventing Lara Croft into a compelling and down-to-earth character. Great example of a successful reboot.
  • Uncharted 4 - Swinging, shooting, swinging, shooting; Uncharted 4 is Naughty Dog's best title. Everything from Madagascar on was such an enjoyable ride. Rafe was the type of villain I was waiting for, someone with reasonable motives that didn't come across as a generic merc guy with an army. While TLL improved some aspects, it never reaches the heights of U4.
  • Killzone 2 - Dark and gritty campaign, one of the best soundtracks, and arguably the best multiplayer experience on the PS3. Just a solid game all around.
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain - Konami definitely dropped the ball, and the situation with Kojima made matters worse, but the gameplay is basically flawless; the shooting, controls/body positions, and the freedom to approach missions however you want gives it insane replay value. The Fox Engine is very impressive.

1. Sonic Mania - It's my Saturn dream game brought into reality
2. Rodea the Sky Soldier - The Wii version is the spiritual sequel to NiGHTS that I was waiting decades for
3. The Witcher 3 - Probably my favorite WRPG ever, and the DLC is especially fantastic
4. Yakuza 0 - My favorite game of the series, and that's saying something since I love all of them
5. Persona 5 - My favorite jrpg since Skies of Arcadia, and I've already played it multiple times
6. Nioh - I adore the combat and the lack of punishment for experimenting
7. Bloodborne - My favorite of the soul series, and its atmosphere is unprecedented
8. Transformers: Fall of Cyberton - This might be my favorite TPS ever, and I still sometimes play the MP
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2 - This is hands down the best 3D Mario, and maybe my overall favorite of the series
10. Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia - I love this game, and I'd rank it second only to SOTN

  1. TW3 - one of the greatest games I have ever played. The world welcomes you in and after hundreds of hours you leave with many cherished memories.
  2. ME2 - no other game before or after has done the team thing better. The characters are memorable and the action is thrilling.
  3. BB - the game that finally got me over the hump and helped break me into the Souls series. One of the best action games ever and a great example of the genre.
  4. RDR - like most kids growing up I loved cowboys. Rockstar nailed the Western better than anyone before or after in gaming.
  5. SMG2 - best Mario game since Mario64.
  6. Doom - best SP FPS of the decade and nothing else comes close (maybe Halo ODST but that's probably cheating). Great music and level design keep the player pushing forward as you mow down demons.
  7. UC2 - best cinematic experience in gaming. Great pacing and action make for a fun filled blockbuster action flick.
  8. BOTW - open world Zelda that delivered a very unique and worthwhile experience. Still the best game on the Switch.
  9. Destiny - it could easily be the best game I have played in my life. It is certainly the game I have played the most. What an awesome experience with friends. I just could not put it down.
  10. Skyrim - peak Bethesda. It is so easy to get lost in the world goofing around and having fun. The ultimate SP sandbox RPG.

1. Nier - It has its weaknesses but its strengths (soundtrack, story, characters) are among the best.
2. Dark Souls - Slight edge over Demon's Souls due to the interconnected world and better bosses.
3. Demon's Souls
4. Nier: Automata - Better gameplay than Nier but the characters were a bit dull and the story was slightly worse.
5. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
6. Xenoblade Chronicles
7. Deus Ex: Human Revolution
8. Saints Row 2 - My favorite co-op game of all time.
9. Life is Strange
10. SOMA

Honorable mentions: The Talos Principle, Furi.

In no particular order:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2- For all intents and purposes, I consider this and the first one to just be one giant amazing game, but this one makes the timeline cut off. The galaxy games are the height of 3-D Mario to me.
  • Mass Effect 2- This game took the amazing world built by the first game, and added the grit and realism needed to really bring it to life in a grounded way. It plays like a collection of short stories rather than a grand narrative, which is both unusual and refreshing.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild- not much else to say that hasn't already been said about this game, but this was the best game in a year of best games, and will likely be remembered as fondly as ocarina of time for the next generation.
  • Civilization V- with well over 400 hours put into this game, you can say I've taken some time to appreciate it. Everyone wants to rule the world, and this is the best attempt at it yet.
  • Fallout: New Vegas- my favorite in the series, and one of the most narratively open games I've ever experienced. The wild west esque setting gives this game such a fun feel compared to both its predecessor and successor.
  • Super Smash Brothers for Wii U- I'm someone that thinks that every smash brothers game is better than the previous one, at least in terms of what I've gotten out of it, and smash has always been the ultimate Nintendo game for Nintendo fans. It's probably the only game on this list that I've put as much time into civilization.
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2- it's a very close decision between this and the first game, but Xenoblade 2 has kept with me long after I put down the controller. The characters are extremely likable, and the finale is unforgettable. Throw in one of the best soundtracks in games, and you have yourself an essential experience.
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze- this game is 2D platforning perfected. With grounded and amazing level design, perfectly paced challenge, and David Wise's best OST yet, this game is bananas.
  • Splatoon 2- how do you make the most innovative and refreshing shooter in years even better? Deliver more of it, add in an excellent horde mode, and a lore expanding DLC campaign.
  • Sonic Mania- proof that you can go home again. Sonic had to go back to come back, and boy am I glad he did. This game gave me the same feeling that six-year-old me had playing sonic on the Genesis.
I did try to keep it to one game a series, and I'm sure I forgot some games that I'll remember later, but I'm pretty happy with this list

So it's an easy opening one-two punch with Life Is Strange and Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, two games which are easily the most emotionally invested I've been in a game.

Next up is Bayonetta, the game that got me into character action games -- a genre I now love -- and remains my favourite.

Then there's Mirror's Edge. To this day, still my favourite game to move around the world in, only matched by Crackdown and Sunset Overdrive.

A portable game now with Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, which I enjoyed so much I've actually gotten into trying real-life escape rooms. None quite as gripping as 999, not yet at least.

I had to have one of the NieR games on here and while it might have a little recency bias, NieR: Automata wins out today, thanks to the Platinum combat.

The Binding Of Isaac: Rebirth/Afterbirth/Afterbirth+
almost earns its place on here on hours played alone, but it also helps that it is one of the best roguelikes ever made, alongside another potential candidate for this list in Spelunky.

Sometimes there's nothing like being an arsehole (in games, anyway) and Alpha Protocol provides that in spades. Sure, it's janky and buggy but I'll take it for this unique spy RPG.

I've always particularly enjoyed the Hitman series more "social stealth" over many other stealth games (though I still love a lot of them too) and HITMAN (2016) is just absolutely wonderful in that regard.

It wasn't going to be a top 10 list from me without a Sonic game and while I've enjoyed the Sonic games of the past decade more than most, Sonic Mania does stand supreme above all challengers.

Man, I'm happy with all these choices and yet I still feel like I could've swapped out nearly all the games with something completely different. And honestly, on a different day, I might well do.

Bloodborne - Probably my favorite game of all time. Only The Legend of Zelda on NES gives it competition for the top spot.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - The best 3D Zelda entry and the best open world game ever made.
Dark Souls - One of the most intricately designed worlds in a video game
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - The best 2D platformer of all time
Portal 2 - If this is truly Valve's final AAA single player experience, they certainly went out on a high note.
Punch-Out!! - The greatest entry in one of my favorite franchises. A perfect arcade experience.
DOOM - The best FPS I've ever experienced outside of Half-Life 2.
The Evil Within 2 - My favorite survival horror game since Resident Evil 4.
The Last of Us - Naughty Dog's approach to cinematic game design was perfected with this title. An incredible achievement in a number of ways.
Hollow Knight - The best Metroidvania I've ever played. And yes, that includes the (former) GOAT, Super Metroid.

1) Persona 4 Golden - Just a well paced game with some incredible design that works so well with all of it's systems. Great cast of characters and well-told story.

tumblr_oj618oVl5l1tw2hyao1_500.gif

2) Final Fantasy XV - One of my favorite experiences I just keep going back to constantly. Emotional narrative with an exceptional cast of characters and a fun/engaging battle system with some of the best music FF has to offer.

3) Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep - One of my favorite KH games after KH2FM. Another JRPG with an emotionally gripping story with great characters.

4) God of War 3 - I know everyone is big on the new one, but I still love this game. It's so well built and designed and has incredible pacing. Really underrated.

tumblr_n0b1o8P5Eo1rzaefho1_500.gif

5) Killzone 2 - The story was very gripping, the villains were great (Radec was amazing), and incredibly satisfying gameplay. The multiplayer ended up being a phenomenal experience. My favorite MP of that generation. Super underrated OST.

AnguishedFlippantGibbon-size_restricted.gif

6) Infamous 2 - Another game that is just fun as hell to play and has a gripping story. They knew they couldn't top the twist of the first game so they went for an emotional ending no matter what you chose and it was brilliant.

1zgzxp3.gif

7) Resistance 3 - A lot of people slept on this game, but it's actually one of the best FPS stories I've ever played. It has a gripping narrative and characters you really get into. Especially after the shocking ending of Resistance 2.

uneknvwa2boqv72tcguh.gif

8) Super Smash Bros for Wii U - Played an ungodly amount of this during breaks at work. Just a super fun game all around and my favorite Nintendo franchise.

9) Devil May Cry 4 - My favorite DMC game as of writing. It just has so much charm and has everything I love.

10) Metal Gear Solid 4 - That last act is one of the best final acts in any video game ever.
