Hey, all.

In celebration of gaming in general, I'm continuing a retrospective series looking at gaming year by year. This is as comprehensive a list as possible of games with at least decent reviews and notable games (even ones that were terrible), but games are likely to be missing, especially the further back in time I go. Try to bear with me if any of that happens.

Also, all games listed are by North American release dates, so there are likely to be at least a few games that released a year prior or a year after, say, in Europe. For example, GTA was released in Europe and Gran Turismo in Japan in 1997, even though the NA release dates are 1998. If you know there's a game which released in your region a certain year and that's the year you played it, by all means, talk about it!

This time, we're heading into 2005, the year the 360 and PSP entered the market.

IPs introduced include:

F.E.A.R., Forza Motorsport, Geometry Wars, God of War, Guild Wars, Guitar Hero, Jade Empire, Lumines, Phantom Dust, Psychonauts, Shadow of the Colossus

Series with sequels/spin-offs include:

Advance Wars, Age of Empires, Animal Crossing, Arc the Lad, Battlefield, Burnout, Call of Duty, Castlevania, Conker, Dance Dance Revolution, Dead or Alive, Donkey Kong, Doom, Dragon Quest, Dynasty Warriors, Everquest, Far Cry, Gran Turismo, Jak, Katamari, Mario Kart, Medal of Honor, MediEvil, Midnight Club, Mortal Kombat, Myst, Need for Speed, Ninja Gaiden, Oddworld, Perfect Dark, Phoenix Wright (introduced to the US via the DS port), Pokemon, Prince of Persia, Project Gotham Racing, Quake, Ratchet & Clank, Resident Evil, Ridge Racer, Sid Meier's Civilization, Sly, SOCOM, Sonic, Star Fox, Star Wars: Battlefront, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Suikoden, Tekken, Tenchu, The Getaway, The Legend of Zelda, The Sims, TimeSplitters, Twisted Metal, Wipeout, Xenosaga

This year feels monumental for so many reasons.

1) The 360 came out, and Microsoft would compete very well against Sony's Playstation machine the following generation.
2) A handheld war was finally underway in addition to the next generation of consoles.
3) Big new series began this year, from God of War to Guitar Hero to Forza.

Some things I thought would be a bigger deal. I remember hoping a Perfect Dark sequel would land on Gamecube the beginning of that generation. Then MS bought them. Then the Perfect Dark sequel would turn out to be a 360 launch game and wouldn't leave a lasting mark. =(

On the other hand, Geometry Wars was a game I knew nothing about prior to the launch, yet whenever I visited my brother and played his 360, that's the game I wanted to play the most. It was the trippiest looking game, too, with your movement warping the area around you. Despite all the big games that launch, that was the game that most impressed me graphically.

A disappointing year for me, since it contains many lesser sequels to great games. But the classics from this year are truly some of the best games of all time.

2005 gave us Sonic Rush and Mario Kart DS but also birthed Shadow the Hedgehog from the third circle of hell so I'm torn

It was a noticeable step down from 2004 but that's probably the best single year ever for games so it was bound to be a bit of a let down. That being said it was still a good year for games and the 360 had a really solid launch lineup.

Quite a reinvention of gaming landscape in those years. Sotc coming a year later as well. 360 launch and the neverending onslaught of ps2 at a nice price of 129 and then 99 dollars lol.

I was still obsessed with PS2 RPGs at that point, but looking back I wish I'd gotten a 360/PSP sooner.

I remember playing alot of Atlus and Nippon Ichi games (DDS1, Makai Kingdom, DDS2 is a LINE UP lemme tell you), Shadow of the Colossus, and a ton of WoW (started raiding late that year Months Late), after going on a Fighter hiatus.

Least remarkable year in my gaming live, I remember being an early buyer of the 360, but stuck with only Project Gotham Racing 3, Hexic HD and Geometry Wars due to lack of money. At least the latter two were pretty fun!

My hype for the revolution was off the charts so it also felt like a pretty long year waiting for it, didn't know this was the year Guitar Hero and GoW were introduced so I guess it is my fault that this year felt so Bland to me as I had already sold my PS2 by then.

The 360 was a beast and that's something we should never forget. If it weren't for MS awful first party politics that sucked even then they'd would have left the PS3 way behind. They absolutely did those first years.

I think the only Sony IP at that point that was comparable in size to some of MS's was Gran Turismo, and we wouldn't get a full sequel until four years into the PS3's life.

I really did start to appreciate Sony's first party around this gen despite none of them being as big in popularity as something like Halo or even what Gears/Forza ended up being.

It didn't have many great games, but oh boy did it ever have three of my all time favorites in God of War, Resident Evil 4, and Killer 7. And then of course Shadow of the Colossus was an extremely important game as well, even if I didn't love it as much as most.

2005 for me was all about the PS2, it was the year I truly transitioned from the PS1 to that console, and thus many titles that I played were not from that year. However, of the 2005 titles, I had a lot of fun with Mario Kart DS, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, Dynasty Warriros 5, Resident Evil 4, God of War, Guitar Hero and Tekken 5.

2005 was a great year for me for one game alone: Ryu Ga Gotoku. It was launched in Japan in December 2005 and quickly became my other favourite game series (alongside Mega Man). So for that reason alone I love 2005!

Bought Resident Evil 4 on a whim, as I wasn't really a huge fan of the series at the time. One of the best gaming purchases I have ever made.

Then Guitar Hero closed out the year by kick-staring a decade plus rhythm game addiction. Bad for my wallet, but fun for me

Quite a strong year, RE4 & FEAR are both legendary games in my mind.
Only thing that would have made 2005 better is if Twilight Princess didn't get delayed to launch aside the Wii.

Goddamn, I miss video game magazines. Still remembering going into the store, and asking my mom (I would have been 14) if I could grab a video game magazine or issue of Import Tuner.

I didn't get a PSP until like 2007 when I could afford to buy one myself. I only had a PS2/Xbox until 2007 when my mom could afford to get me a PS3. I still remember crying and telling her to return it because I didn't think we could afford it and that I'd save my own money (which I had and ended up buying that PSP with). Never got a Xbox 360 until the S model came out, but really enjoyed it then.

Looking back I really miss these years though. It was a simpler time for me. I was perfectly content with my PS2/Xbox, I told my mom I wanted to wait for a PS3 instead of a 360 because of Metal Gear. The combination of not having my own money really (just mowing yards really) and not being surrounded by gaming media besides G4tv (Holy hell I miss G4) means everything was so much simpler.

DS in 2005 was the stuff of legend. Especially after the slow start in late 2004.

Mario Kart, Animal Crossing, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Partners in Time, Sonic Rush, Viewtiful Joe, Ouendan etc. Amazing.

In the UK the DS launched in March but the PSP in September. PSP was life in 2005 - portable GTA was just so much better than anything on DS at the time.

WoW and BF2 ate up most my time that year. Other big notables were RE4, Stubbs the Zombie, F.E.A.R., Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow, CoD 2, Black & White 2, Ninja Gaiden Black, Oddworld Stranger's Wrath, Timesplitters Future Perfect, Star Wars Republic Commando. Pretty solid year.

It seems to be an average or slightly below average year to me but it still had some high notes.

Shadow of the Colossus lived up to the hype.

Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat was the best 2d mascot platformer to come out in a while, and its use of bongos made it feel fresh. Psychonauts was pretty cool for 3d platformers because of its creative environments.

Resident Evil 4 breathed life new into a franchise. I don't think it's better than classic RE but after games like Zero, the series had become stale.

Darwinia was a taste of where indie games of the future would go with its stylish retro vibe.

As a big Gunstar Heroes fan, the GBA sequel was a major let down especially after Treasure's Astro Boy was so good. Minish Cap was pretty but the world design didn't compare to Link's Awakening.

I liked Jade Empire, Guitar Hero, FEAR, Indigo Prophecy, Kirby Canvas Curse, and Killer7.

Battlefield 2 was mind blowing. The game looked absolutely gorgeous on PC with great lighting and scale. I had to upgrade just to play it but that game pretty much was 2005 for me.
I didn't even think about consoles until halo 3 was announced.

2005 was when I got my PSP - first (and only) non-nintendo portable that I had gotten.

I was also still getting used to the PS2 which I had bought back in 2003.

My favorite game that I played in 2005 was Devil May Cry 3 and I remember watching trailers all year with my friends multiple times for Kingdom Hearts 2.

Honestly, probably the pinnacle of my time spent with the hobby was in '05.

RE4, Killer 7, Meteos, Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, Advance Wars: Dual Strike, Oddworld: Strangers Wrath, GTA: San Andreas,Dragon Quest VIII, Indigo Prophecy, Klonoa 2, etc.

It's the year that kept on giving, and I had bought my friends' XBOX and PS2 to pair up w/ my Gamecube alongside my DS. I was in gaming heaven.

Once the Wii dropped in late '06, I recall getting so frustrated w/ Twilight Princess' intro that I quit the hobby 'for good'. Worked on my social life, getting a gf, not wasting my high school years playing video games, etc.

Maybe I should quit video games again lol.

Outside of RE4 and GOW for PS2, 2005 was a non-existent year for me as I mainly updating ESPN NFL 2K5. Had no interest in any of those other games or Xbox 360. Stuck with my PS2 for a few more years.

I thought the PS3 was going to come out and murder everyone.

lmao

That's what I was thinking after that infamous Killzone 2 trailer. I thought, "Welp, PS3 is going to kill it."

I hear ya. I have most of those magazines sitting in a closet somewhere and I remember reading them for the first time to learn about PSP games. I was very active on the internet for years by that point, but I still loved getting the magazines.

I still have all my EGMs from when I first subscribed in 2002 until that "last" one in 2009 (before it came back this decade). They're at my parents' house, and if I visit, I don't mind reading a few of them in the evening when we're all done for the day. It's fun to see what we were all looking forward to, games we were hyped for that didn't materialize, and that very good "What Crappened?" article from EGM in 2002.

Hey, you can have a great social life and play lots of games; I've done that for many years now. =P You can do it!

I think the RROD did far for damage than their first party politics
