As long as most of the fanservice shit is relegated to DLC or post-game I'm okay with that. In fact, that's probably preferable to having the beach scene in the original being awkwardly shoehorned mid-game. I'm really more concerned with characters, especially women, being walking cookie-cutter anime tropes.

The original VC is fairly "anime" but at least the romance between Alicia and Welkin felt pretty believable. VC4 already seems to have more anime hijinks [woops I'm looking up your skirt] so that's disappointing.

Oh cool, another JRPG series that started off with some light anime tropes and fan service decides to jump into the deep end of otaku crap.

Also lol @ the defending comparing it to VC1. VC1 was at like a 3/10 in terms of animu weeb shit. Stop playing dumb. And I don't see how it being optional is a good excuse, so people who like the gameplay system and don't wanna see that shit should just not do the optional content? Can I make a game and put some racist blackface kiddie fiddling stuff in but it's cool because it's only optional?

I've loved the first game so much I bought it 3 times, and I even enjoyed VC2 despite the flaws it had. Won't be getting VC4 until it's like £15.

Honestly I'm too old and too tired for this otaku crap, I'm not a 16 year old anime fan anymore. This shit is cringe as fuck.

Thanks. Really hope this game does well and it's not a case of people wanting a new entry and end up not buying it.

Any idea how this game performed in Japan?

I think it sold under 100k which means it never reached VC3's opening sales. The Switch releases in September but that's probably going to sell less than 10k.

As someone who enjoys fanservice it's always a bummer how aggro people get over it, especially with the name calling and general insults. Not everyone who's down with it is some crazy otaku pervert, and it doesn't make you anti-progressive either. I'm bi so I'd love to see fanservice go both ways, but unfortunately that's usually not the case. It won't stop me from enjoying the occasional anime tiddy though.
The only name calling and general insults in this thread have been from people defending the fanservice and mansplaining. The issue here is obviously the fanservice is disproportionate towards female characters and not equal to the males.

People are capable of disliking something but still enjoying a game despite it. Doesn't mean they can't be upset if a new game has more of what they dislike. I love Persona 5 but I still want shit like that offensive gay couple to not be in the next Persona title.

I say all this as someone who enjoys fanservice.

Odd question, but does the secondary cast of characters have unique body models? I know it was sort of addressed as of VC3, but I definitely recall VC1 featuring head-swapped characters on stock bodies depending on the sex.

Threads on pervy games are always a great way to pad the ignore list. And why do the objectification defenders always act like every game panders identically? Like a low cut dress in one game is the same as a nude scene in the next? One guy ever argues that pandering is pandering so don't bother to quantify.

If you play this game, this is the kind of bullshit you have to look forward to:

One character doesn't reveal that another character is an enemy spy, because he likes her.

The pink haired little girl, loved by all as soon as she appears out of nowhere, is a bomb. A Valkyria child they plan to use as an atomic bomb. She also powers the ship, or something.

I love VC gameplay, but the story was bad enough for me to drop right out of it. We're talking The 3rd Birthday levels of bad here.

That honestly doesn't sound bad. The second spoiler reminds me a bit of MGS V zero

Does it have an ending with a moral as ... japanese as the first?

I do not know how to explain it, the message / moral of VC1 shocked me a lot because that, I thought it was quite strange.
I mean everything about Alicia and Faldo.

Yup. You can still like the game for what it is while also criticise things that are unacceptable and/or shouldn't be there.

If you like fanservice, then just say it and I won't judge you. But don't say that it's fine and people should just accept it or leave the game alone. That's the attitude we don't need here.

From what I hear, it's less weird and more
the main guy finally commits to the whole "use the little girl as a bomb" thing, only for the war to end and he has to scrub the mission, despite all the losses they'd taken along the way.

This is infinitely better than Star Trek: Discovery's "Earth is about to get its shit kicked in by Klingons, so we're gonna refuse to blow up their homeworld or at least threaten them into backing down, and hand over the control to the bomb to a Klingon we have zero reason to trust, because pragmatism and competence = evil."

I'm not getting this game at launch (I'm not getting *any* new games until I've cleared out my ridiculous backlog) but it's good to hear that the gameplay seems fine. I was never bothered by scout rushing but it's cool to hear that you don't need to do that to get better ranks. The fanservice seems eyerollingly bad (knowing the context behind that scene doesn't make it any better imo) but I'm okay with not having to deal with it in the main game whatsoever, personally.

I vaguely remember this. I can't remember the specifics but I do remember finding it weird that the game was treating Faldio as if he were wrong in what he did

Better than the remastered version of 1, worse than 1-2-3. Only released on PS4 though.

We'll see. Also good to note there's VC1 remastered releasing on the same platform at the same time.
Thank you. How difficult is to find that answer in this thread.
Yeah, people that played the game and posted impressions (the point of the thread) got drowned out by the drive-by derail and the quick 3-5 words reactions. Disappointing.

I'm getting the game at launch, I love VC1 and replaying the game in the Ps4 a few months ago reafirmed my hype for another home console VC game. I'm slightly disappointed in how Sega introduced more fanservice as I've said before, I see that the thread re-opened the Xc2 discussion again (I love Xc2 despite the fanservice) but I do think that is a different case. One thing is a game about shonen adventure and epic discovery and another different thing is a game about war, racism and imperialism (yeah, I'm not from the USA and I despise imperialism). I can tolerate sexualization and fanservice to a degree, and I'm not the kind of player who will judge a game only using certain designs and scenes, but I'm disappointed that they decided to do some really embarassing scenes like the beach scene or the "I'm doind tank maintenance and obviously my love interest will be there to let me peek under her skirt when I go under my tank" in a game saga that even if """"anime""""", did a good job imo presentensing some interesting themes.

Do I need to play the second and third games or I can pretend that they don't exist?

But what's there to pretend? Worse than VC1? Yeah probably. Worse than 2 and 3? I don't think so and I stand by it.

Also, I don't think your analogy works at all. Teenage boys hide porn mags because they want to read them. Most people don't defend fanservice in this game because they want to see naked women (or at least I hope so), they just think these pics don't represent the whole game. A more accurate analogy would be you are watching a film when your parents come in and it's showing a sex scene on the screen. You feel a bit awkward so you try to explain what the film is about.

There have already been posts consisting of nothing but people drooling, wanting moar, and comments about liking anime titties. I think you are completely wrong

If you are going to call yourself knowledge, one can hope you had the knowledge to understand that people can change.

VC1 was released over 10 years ago. One can only hope someone who has knowledge would have learned by now why such pathetic levels of pandering oops I mean "fan service" and sexual harassment is both extremely pathetic and wrong.

10 years ago, I could play MGS4 and I thought Kojima was a genius. 8 years later, I think he his a man child.

Aeana Dropping that image and leaving is a 100% shitpost; don't know if you give a shit or not, but I think this definitely removes a lot of respect for you I had. Imagine if you did this in a Trails thread.

Understand that Raz is a crass, reckless soldier. In the army, you're gonna have guys like that, who don't respect personal boundaries.
Honestly given how polite and nice everyone in your squad is, having a more dirty and not-so-smart soldier like Raz is good for character diversity.
Not shitpost. Aeana did a great job to informed people like me, who don't want to support such sexist behavior. No one forced SEGA to include that scene and I wont reward companies who do such a thing by giving them my money.

BTW your justification for Raz a guy who was introduced by sexually assaulting his fellow squad mates is very interesting. Someone can be crass without having to assault women. I guess a sexually assaulting people is a great way to introduced character diversity, especially in a market where GG already exist. Way to go SEGA, congratulations on having more diverse character. I am amaze that you can say such a silly thing proudly and with no irony.

If someone asked about Ao no Kiseki Evolution, I might similarly link one of the insanely bad rapey garbage screens that were added to that version. I don't like that this kind of content is so pervasive in my favorite genre now, and I certainly would like people to know what they're in for.

I don't think the image sums up the game entirely or anything, but I never claimed it did. People are free to draw their own conclusions from any information presented. I didn't really feel that I needed to comment; there are plenty of other sources of information in this thread. I don't matter any more than any other person.

While it's always nice to have context, the mere fact that such a scene is in the game says something about the developers' priorities and I wouldn't blame anyone for changing their plans to play the game based on it.

Personally I thank you for allowing me to make an informed decision by not supporting this kind of exploitative fan service. I didn't know it had gotten this bad. What's worse is the people rushing to defend it and in doing so, misrepresenting the level of fan service in the original game. It was not this bad and the otaku here know it. That they have to lie to defend themselves is hilarious, especially when we aren't calling them out, we are calling the games content out

Wow, that sounds terrible. That's the kind of stuff that breaks immersion and my interest in all of the characters.

Which is why I find it difficult to enjoy Tales games.

I wish Raita would get work on an actual porn game instead of working on VC as his "mainstream' work and working on his super popular porn magical girl series as a side gig. I would definitely buy it. Instead we get halfway and fanservice - I would definitely play a full game based on his "porn universe." I don't get into fanservice at all much anymore. It takes some really crazy stuff for fanservice to work for me these days.

I would be more than happy to see actual porn games, and not BS fanservice that feels out of place in otherwise great games. Just keep it separate.

This would be way better for the industry, yeah. Then the people who only care about anime titties can be happy and we can get some JRPGs that can actually be taken seriously and respected again.

You can have both, you know. Some of my favorite games of all time have porn in them and are also really fun (Utawarerumono as an example.) I never played it myself, but Sengoku Rance is also an in-depth strategic RPG that many found fun alongside the porn.

To get away from the fan-service discussion for a minute and return to the original question: so VC1 and VC4 are both coming to the Switch. VC4 has a September date; VC1 is digital and, last I checked, has no firm date as yet. If I'm new to the series, and mostly interested because I adored Code Name: STEAM and was repeatedly told that this is where I should go next, is the general recommendation to wait for VC1 and play it first? (I'm aware it's been on PC for a while, but most of my library and play time have been drifting to the Switch in the past year, so I held off on the PC port.) Or is it worthwhile in gameplay terms to go straight to VC4? I'm not too concerned about fan-service or story; I'm just wondering if this is at all like a situation like Advance Wars where it was perfectly fine to start with Dual Strike because it completely wraps around the mechanics and modes (and in that case, also the cast) of its GBA predecessors. I'd be happy to start with whichever is simply the better strategy game.

Thank you for the clarity. Posts like this are what this thread should be for.
Vc1 seems to be a simultaneous release in japan as a preorder bonus for 4 is a discount on the original game, however we have no info on a western release as of yet

I don't want to play games with porn in them. Period. I'm sick and tired of every JRPG going out of its way to make sure titty/thigh-gap fanatics feel catered to. I just want some games I can enjoy without caveat.

I'm certainly not shitting on your decision. I was just stating that there is a place for porn games with fun gameplay, but they're severely underrepresented in the game market. Instead there is a flood of tease and fanservice content.

I don't care for tons of fanservice either. Console games can't have porn in them, so here we are.

Yeah, I wouldn't have an issue with it if there were viable alternatives, but nowadays, it's like "if you don't like titties and creepy anime stuff, play Dark Souls and shut up".

And, like, I love Souls games, but it's so hard to find a good narrative-driven JRPG that isn't complete poison now. If the industry allowed porn games to be made, maybe then we could finally break the stranglehold the otaku community has on the genre.

Yeah, at this point most games like this are a "sigh and move on" for me. I'm into anime but the random blasts of fan service in either medium just don't add anything and actively detract from them. It's like having really bad bottom of the barrel humor that also objectifies women and makes games more unwelcoming. Especially a shame when the game itself has potential to be good. But there are so many games out there that I can just pass on shit like this pretty comfortably.
