Naruto and One Piece pre-timeskips I'd say. Really great supporting casts and villains across the board in those days. Post TS new characters in both series really suck most of the time.

Oh this is really easy, it's Berserk.

This isn't the 'worst cast or characters' thread :b

One Piece. Every character is very memorable, not just the main ones. JoJo is a close second.

Not sure I'd agree post-ts.

Ever since Oda has developed this annoying habit of separating the main cast they don't even feel like an actual crew anymore (imo at least). We had like 70+ chapters with Sanji/Nami etc making no appearance and then we had like 70 chapters of Zoro/Robin making no appearance.

I love Berserk, but Miura isn't a good character writer sorry :b

Huh?

When it comes to main characters (Guts, Griffith and Casca) Miura is literally one of the GOAT character writers.

When it comes to side characters Miura ranges from simply amazing (Farnese - dat character development) to decent (Isidro).

The problem is that the cast has simply gotten too big and as a result of that they don't quite get as fleshed out as much as they should anymore.

Another vote for One Piece. I can't think of any other work where so many amazing and relatively minor characters in addition to the main cast are developed with such skill.

I haven't read or watched One Piece so I can't really speak to that, so I'll go with Jojo. So many memorable characters despite getting a new cast every part.

This.

Entire main cast has been reduced heavily to one note gimmicks in favor of the side characters we get every chapter.

writing in part 1 >>> part 2

the strawhats were way wya better written , chemistry was way way better

part 1 op > part 2

one piece characters are off for me , barring law and doffy no one in part 2 seems as real to someone say a shikamaru or kakashi

Jojos, because every single character gets a moment to shine.

Infact I love Seven Deadly Sins for the same reason.

My Hero Academia also has a great cast.

YYH- fucking love team Urameshi, everyone gets their time to shine even if its not a fight. Kuwabara being an example of a great character without having to be one of the strongest.

One Piece- I love the SH pirates and how they play off of each other.

Berserk- from the golden age band of the hawk to Guts dnd party I love these allys who surround guts. They are very well rounded and the series really makes you care about them.

Jojo- Ive only gotten up to finishing pt 4 but dam do i love pt 4s cast Koichi the GOAT. Honestly I didnt truly care about a jojo cast until pt4. I really didnt like pt 1, pt 2 was fun but didnt have much more memorable than Joseph imo, pt 3 i found the characters really bland and while I enjoyed certain moments i found pt 3 kind of overrated and Jotaro really boring. But Josuke,Koichi, Rohan and others ate god dam great god pt 4 made me actually love this series. Sadly im reading pt5 and not really feeling it atm, Giorno is meh.

Alongside One Piece, Hunter x Hunter, Monster and JoJo, I'd add Hero Academia to the list. It's amazing how much development Hirokishi has added to the side characters.

Naruto. Complain all you want about power creep and whatever else but the reason the show was beloved was because the world building and cast of characters was just spot on.
What world building? We barely see anything apart from the leaf's sphere of influence. It does a piss poor job of explaining the politics and geography of the world, and the hierarchies of any aspect of society outside of genin->chunin->jounin->kage.

Then it throws us into another ninja world war and that's that

I'm honestly more interested in seeing what EVERY other character outside of the main cast is doing at any given time in One Piece. That's how impressed I am with Oda's storytelling.

Even if he did leave me cold at the end of the Reverie. WHAT'S BONNEY DOING?! Find out in a few years!

I'd say HxH or YuYu. Early Dragon Ball Z had instances where everyone contributed to a battle and Super brought most fighters back into the spotlight although there were some strange omissions but that is a discussion for another day.

One Piece. You never know when something or someone you thought would be insignificant turns out to be something big later on.

What's your definition of part 1 and 2 for One Piece? If it's pre and post timeskip then I absolutely agree with you.

Gintama
One Piece
JoJo
Assassin's Classroom
Sket Dance
Golden Kamuy
Monster
Kingdom

I think this covers it for the large cast stories. Obviously if we included anime, then LOGH would no doubt be at the top.

Also worth mentioning:

My Hero Academia
Dr. Stone
Haikyu
March Comes Like A Lion
Spirit Circle (small cast, but very indepth)
A Bride's Story (josei, but fuck it's too good not to mention)

Series that have some good/great characters but either suck at using them or bloat the cast:

Naruto
Bleach
Fairy Tail
Magi
Shaman King
Dragon Ball
Attack on Titan
Hunter x Hunter

Doesn't mean these series are crappy, just needed better writing or planning.

Gonna make a somewhat controversial pick considering the manga's premise, but its cast is truly what makes this such an enjoyable and relatable read.

Yeah what's important about One Piece is that things (major things) happen in the background whether the protagonist or any of the main characters are involved with it or not. Characters don't just drop and stop at the whim of whether Luffy gets involved with something, they're actively moving and doing things in the background. Despite what people on here are suggesting this still occurs till this day with the entire cast of the series.

Pretty much one piece is one of a absolute tiny number shounens with a cast that has as much independent agency as it does. Almost every major character has goaals plans and ambitions and actively goes about complete with or without the main characters which sometimes lead back into the MC adventures. \your talking about a almost hundred characters doing this. It's why the story feels like a microsm just like how you'll see in a news in paper the world that the SH are doing some crazy shit you'll also find out about another character or host of characters doing their own crazy shit.

Full Metal Alchemist. Great main and supporting cast that all felt unique, never felt like they overshadowed each other, or that there were too many characters for the author to give a fair amount of time to/took time away from other characters.

Bleach has great characters but they are almost all horribly utilized
Yep. "Best" is an extremely broad term here. My first thought was Bleach as well as far as strictly the characters go. How they're presented and used though is a clusterfuck.

Assassination Clasroom is another great one where I thought there was a lot of shine to everyone.

I'd say a very good argument could be made for Katakuri being one of the most real feeling characters in One Piece. We actually see the defining moment of his childhood that made him close himself up and hide his true self so he could protect himself from feeling the same sense of anguish he had when he was a child. Most characters in One Piece are defined by death and oaths. Katakuri is who he is because something went wrong when he was a kid and he decided to shut himself off to the world.

On topic I would say Yu Yu Hakusho is the best shonen series cast. It's amazing how defined all the regulars are and how each one has a personality so distinct that you could easily tell who is talking to who based on listening how they talk to each other.

Yea. YYH is just amazing from the core. No fan service bullshit. Team Urameshi is straight squad goals. Just a fun cast.

HxH is decent so far but imo Leorio needs more build. Gon and Killua are fantastic tho. That relationship is just... wow.
