In rapidly graying Japan, living till you're 100 is no longer a milestone for many: Miyako Chiyo, the oldest person in the country and world, died Sunday aged 117, according to the country's Health Ministry.

Chiyo was born on May 22, 1901 and clinched the title of oldest living woman in Japan from Misao Okawa, then the country's oldest person, when she died, also aged 117, in April 2015.
Okawa was born on March 5, 1898. She was one month younger than Chiyo.

Imagine being so old you actually remember WWI?

imagine being ready to settle down at the end of your life in the 1970s, but then you accidentally live for another 50 years

Holy Jesus she was old enough to recall both world wars and all the rest of the terrible things the world has endured since. Mindboggling

Wait, it says Chiyo was born in 1901 and Okawa was born in 1898, but it also says Okawa was one month younger than Chiyo.

Am I reading that wrong?

EDIT: I was reading it wrong

I think what people failed to notice is that the previously known oldest person was also Japanese.

I wonder if that will change what with globalization, changing diet, stress, etc.

Pretty incredible that she managed to live through World War 1, the rise of the Japanese Empire, World War 2, the American Occupation, the economic rise of Japan, and the economic decline of Japan.

always makes you think when this happens.. goddamn that was a long life, can't imagine how it felt to see the world change so much.

i hope someone makes it to 120 in the coming years, that hasnt happened in a while..

on a sidenote, i talked to a lucid 95 year old the other day, she re-lived some WW2 bombings of our city, as if it had happened recently. i was just kinda silent.. it's so unfathomable to me to think that this city (Turku Finland) was actually bombed by another country (Russia) and some folk still remember it vividly.

I would never want to be that old. 70-75 is around the age I want to leave this shitty world.

It's crazy how old she was, she has seen a lot of shit go down and how the world rapidly changed.

We need to stop this shit. If, 100 years from now, a 117 year old person cannot be completely healthy and in peak physical condition, we have fucking failed as an advanced species.

This shit has gone on long enough.

I'm sure it isn't meant this way, but I feel like that title implies no one is known to have lived longer.

Amazing period of time to live through but it must suck big time eventually when you aren't mobile and healthy.

It would be great if by the time we're all old, medical science allows everyone to live to about 120. And by that I mean being like an early 70 year old at that time meaning you can still move around and do stuff.

How much would someone pay to have sex with a 117-year old?

Damn.

I don't even know if I would want this. Like, I'm fine with 70, anything beyond that sounds like a fucking nightmare and other people have to take care of you instead of enjoying their young lives.
