'When Calls the Heart' Gets SVOD Spinoff Series 'When Hope Calls'
Hallmark Channel's longest running, most-watched primetime series ever, When Calls the Heart is getting a spinoff to premiere in 2019 on Crown Media Family Networks' SVOD subscription service, Hallmark Movies Now. This was one of several announcement made by Crown Media at TCA

When Hopes Calls i(working title) s [my note: lol Deadline, get a fucking editor already] the first original streaming series on Hallmark Movies Now, which launched in October 2017 and gives subscribers access to nearly 1,000 hours of family friendly content not available on Crown Media's linear channels.
...
No details about the spinoff series were disclosed.
Where my hearties at?

Heh. Some details:

Altered Carbon casts Avengers actor Anthony Mackie as season 2 star
First, Avengers: Infinity War actor Anthony Mackie is taking over as the show's lead character Takeshi Kovacs. Mackie is stepping in for season 1 star Joel Kinnaman.

In addition, Alison Schapker (Lost, Fringe) is joining the series as co-showrunner and will also serve as an executive producer. Season 1 boss Laeta Kalogridis will return as co-showrunner and executive producer.

The show's debut season was considered a dazzling-looking drama that sometimes struggled under the weight of its own ambitions. The show also received some criticism for having a white actor play an Asian lead character. In the futuristic world of Altered Carbon, based on Richard K. Morgan's novel, human consciousness can be put into different body "sleeves," which makes it rather easy to have different actors play the same character.

As Netflix puts it: "The journey of Takeshi Kovacs spans hundreds of years, many different bodies, and planets. This allows the story to explore themes of identity, mortality, and the human soul. In this new season, Anthony Mackie will be the new embodiment of Kovacs, as the series continues to expand on these deeper themes and ideas across longer periods of times and different worlds throughout the universe."

The renewal of Carbon had been held up, hinging on finding an ideal new lead. Mackie is a big score for the production, having broken out in Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and as Tupac Shakur in Notorious, and now playing Sam Wilson/The Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

One of the shows I wanted to get renewed most. And I'm thrilled about Mackie replacing Kinnaman.

I know, rite?
I always thought Altered Carbon (which I more or less enjoyed) would be renewed...
Same, Netflix spent waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much money on it to not renew it. That they're bringing in a new showrunner does indicate that they know shit didn't quite connect.

But let's celebrate with honoring the epic battle from the previous show from the Altered Carbon showrunner

I still need to watch Altered Carbon.
You don't. (it's not very good)

Instead watch:
Patrick Melrose
Rectify
Mad Men
The Honourable Woman
Le Bureau des Légendes (The Bureau)

or like the literally hundreds of shows that are genuinely good. Sure it looks pretty but the writing is so not up to snuff.

The first season frankly sucked apart from the great concept and high production values.

Thankfully, because of the source material, this season is basically a reboot where the only thing remaining are those two things. Completely new cast of characters, main lead a different actor, basically new/different subgenre (more Action-y vs detective-y) -- they even have a new showrunner and creative team. So this can more or less be treated as an all new show, which is great. At least the potential is there.

YouTube Content Chief Susanne Daniels On Rebrand, Budget Plan, Embrace Of Long-Form – TCA
In her scripted remarks before the open Q&A, Daniels highlighted some of the dozens of projects in the pipeline for 2018 and beyond. (This year will see 15 new shows debut in the U.S.) Among the projects that typify the kinds of programming YouTube is targeting, she said, are series with the attachments of Jordan Peele, George Clooney, Robert Downey Jr. and Lance Bass.

Kobra Kai, the update of Karate Kid that rolled out recently, has "exceeded all of our expectations," she said. Viewers have consumed more than 1 billion total hours of Karate Kid-related video content on the platform, and the first episode of the reboot has drawn 40 million.
Episode length, another area of experimentation, has also started to settle in at a longer duration more consistent with the standard of rival streaming services and networks.

"The feedback we were getting from subscribers was, 'Hey, we get short-form content all day long from YouTube. If we're going to subscribe to Premium, we want something more." As a result, the service has committed to a minimum episode length of 20 minutes an episode, Daniels said. Her session was followed by a series that reinforced that more epic approach: sci-fi series Origin from Left Bank Pictures, the company behind Netflix's The Crown.

Source? If this is going by the source material (I've only read the original book), I don't see any confirmation that the new season will be based on the second or third Kovacs novels.

First season was flawed but a lot of fun. I wouldn't have been heartrbroken if it didn't get renewed, given that season 1 was mostly self-contained, but I'm happy to see it finally confirmed after way too long in limbo.

I'm assuming season 2 will be based on book 2, which had him in a black body. Hence Anthony Mackie.

Someone tell John Stankey that Adult Swim needs a new creative director and for them to finally air Black Jesus season 3 after 3 years.

Yeah, this does not paint a nice picture of the culture at CBS or Moonves. Very trepidatious about what will happen to CBS since anyone getting absorbed by Viacom/Redstones isn't exactly an enticing prospect as a consumer.
With no heir apparent, and some really fucking deep seated corporate culture issues, CBS is in a tough spot.
Why is it so hard for men to not be dicks and abuse their power? sigh

I would assume it's bad people promoting other bad people who share their views in a cycle.

Unfortunately it seems like season 2 will not really follow book 2 at all. Season 1 followed book 1 like... 70%, the good bits were in the book the bad bits were all new made up stuff. I'll definitely watch season 2 because I love the vibe, characters, setting, ideas, etc but I am expecting a pile of grey goo.

I do wonder though why it took so long to announce renewal and if it means anything to the budget, etc.

Kenya Barris Officially Exits ABC Studios Pact, Eyes Nine-Figure Netflix Mega-Deal
It's official: Black-ish showrunner and Girls Trip writer Kenya Barris is leaving his longtime home at ABC Studios as sources say he could become the next mega-producer to ink a nine-figure overall deal with Netflix.

Barris' deal with ABC Studios will end in August as he and the studio have now negotiated his exit. He had three years remaining on his ABC Studios deal. Netflix, meanwhile, declined comment on a potential deal with the prolific writer-producer.

That Barris news finally came to be! That deal with Netflix would be insanity, guess we'll hear about it in the next 30 days.
