The BBC stopped using the Met Office in March, so of course their forecasting has gone to shit. ITV weather is more accurate now.

Ah that makes sense, in a "Why the heck would they do that?" sort of way.

Just realised my post made me sound like I was in the Watford area! I was just using it as an example, I'm in the West London area, so I take the Central line into work and I'm constantly melting like the Raiders Of The Lost Ark when they open the Ark.

Salisbury local reporting in. The heat has broke a bit today with some clouds which is a massive releif.
Hopefully we get a bit of rain following this.

Still my flat is absolutely roasting. It's really well insulated and we're on the middle floor. So we trap heat in really well.

Amazing in winter hell in summer. The thermometer was reporting 33c at midnight last night.

Send help or kill me

I really recommend a mobile airco. Yes they make tons of noise and if you have a rental house and aren't allowed to drill a hole in the window or wall for the tube you will need to keep the window open but this thing has been a livesaver every summer since like 2006 or so and it set me back 250 euro back then. probably cheaper now.

As a Brit overseas atm, it's apparently 37 degrees today.

Not in Britain but the heat in Holland is fucking murder. Living downtown with little to no isolation. It was 33C at 11pm and didn't drop below 30 the entire night. It was sleeping in a pool of sweat. I work mostly from home and my productivity has taken a nose dive. Kind of taking a vacation (with small work breaks here and there) until the weather settles down a bit.

I live alone. Naked with a fan aimed straight at me. It's not pretty but extreme times calls for extreme action. All other clothed times - just sweating like a nun in a sex shop.

So literally every time I check the BBC weather page, it's changed.

There was going to be storms in the night, but nothing.

There was going to be rain at 9am, but nothing.

There was going to be rain at 2PM, but now its saying rain at 5PM.

Make up your damn mind!

Had a huge thunderstorm last night which was a welcome change. That was the first lot of rain in a month, might help the grass a bit? It's back to being muggy and hot again though, which is nice i suppose because the village fate is on this weekend. It would be sod's law for it to rain over the one weekend when something is actually happening!

The "made to insulate" thing is a bit weird to me.

Modern houses in Spain are also well insulated. Winters can be pretty frigid outside of the coastal areas and summers are blistering. I live in a part of the country where Spring and Autumns last a couple of weeks, so I go from bleeding out from my nipples to melting into a puddle of my own miasmas. Houses NEED to be well insulated so you can trap heat during Winters and keep them cool in Summer by leaving the windows open at night and closing them just as you wake up.

The worst part about heat in the UK is the humidity. Hot days are fucking muggy. I remember the tube being particularly displeasing, and it's not like using Madrid's is a wonderful experience during Summer.

Yeah, a properly insulated home is a good thing during summer. You have a chance to keep the heat out. I live in an attic apartment in Germany, basically no insulation. It's currently 37c inside. There is no greater summer hell than living directly under a roof that directly transports the heat into your living quarters.

I'm in the northwest it's not been so bad. Rained a bit and seems to go back and forth around 19-27 Felt worse a few weeks back when the AC in the office was broken for like a month. I'd say 30 degrees is manageable for me as long as I don't gotta do much.

I had a news popup on my phone that it's hitting 37 today? And if it hits 38.5 it's the hottest we've ever had to date?

Please no, please fucking no.

The causeway leading to an island in the river that runs through my town is completely exposed and easily walkable. I've never seen the water level anywhere near this low.

Work had climate controle which for some reason is hardly working this week. Was insufferable at work yesterday.

Working from home now, also no AC here but at least I can wear shorts (obligatory long pants at work) and take a cold shower once and then. Makes it tolerable.

Interesting seeing all the posts on local Facebook groups around here with people trying to track down anywhere that has fans in stock. Reminds me of a few years ago when everywhere was sold out for about 2 months.

Not British, but it's 31 C here in Gothenburg, Sweden today. Just awful. Anything over 25 is just too hot. Our office has good AC, but it's another story at home.

Exactly this has been happening here. Fans are out of stock everywhere.

Do they not sell air conditioners?

I'll just speak for what i know in France but here, there isn't any AC pre-installed in most home and appartments. So you have to install one yourself. A full integrated unit for the flat/home would cost a lot of money for a rather limited use (outside the peak of summer, there's just no need) so we tend not to do it.

As for small "portable" units (those were you need to pass a tube by a window to evacuate humidity and whatnot), the offer is quite reduced and when people realize they need one, the stocks evaporate almost instantly. And the cost is still a bit prohibitive for just a few weeks of use per year. It's like fans, no one need one most of the time so there is always a rush to buy them towards end of July.

So yes, they sell AC. But because there isn't much demand, the stocks are limited and the prices usually too high.

Are window units not something that's used? Whole house air conditioners and portable AC's aren't very common in the states. Most of the AC's that we use, in our homes, are window units.

Me and my OH have spent our afternoons covering each with ice cubes, then standing in front of the fan, then laying on the stone kitchen floor. If anyone's seeing through that kitchen window they must think we're getting our kink on constantly lol.

Me and my OH try our best to keep about 20cm away from each other in bed because we just radiate heat. Man, heat sucks when you want to cuddle but you know it's just not fucking worth it.

You guys have those push/pull windows in the US, right? Most of Europe has the more andvanced window type that can be tilted. The huge downside is that those windows suck
ass when it comes to using mobile ACs, because the isolation-thingy is so painful to install. On the plus side: we can blame you guys for being so arrogant to build cities in otherwise
life-threatening environments and for wasting so much energy ;P

Theory time: what if those Fortnite dances works like an inverted rain dance? Imagine millions of teens doing that shit. Yes, that is the only plausible explanation.
We can only fight this by doing a traditional rain dance and we have to outnumber those Fortnite kiddies + Griezman.

Here's how to do it:

I know right? It's rough man. Like you throw a leg their way to test the waters and instantly you feel the contact heat building up.

Me thinks this is about to become the new normal (hopefully not and its just one of those summers).

Honestly, I have half a heart to start an AC business.

Temperature has risen above 38 degrees C at several places in the Netherlands now. It's honestly not that bad during the day, as long as you have the luxury of not doing much at all. But the nights are killing. 25 degrees C at most places. There was a time we Dutch considered ourselves lucky when we got temperatures like that during the day, since summers here used to be mild and rainy. Used to.

Hell heat? Haha. Man, you guys really aren't used to extremes, huh? We don't even use AC at home. I have an old fan going, but it's mostly for the cats because they can't take off their fur coats.
Well, yeah. If they were common enough to get used to them, they wouldn't be extremes anymore.

I guess I should have worded it more, tolerance(?) of extremes? Adaptability? I'm not from a place that gets crazy hot either, but I don't melt into a puddle. I know OP is just being exaggerated in his delivery, but even on the news they make it sound like the end of times. It was the same with the "Beast from the East" stuff. I got all excited and it was a big nothing in my area. :(
