Vampyr, DONTNOD Entertainment's narrative-driven action-RPG set in 1918 London, announces a content update coming later this summer. This will include two new game game modes which add further replayability for existing players and more options for those who haven't yet sunk their teeth into this dark adventure.

As well as bringing a host of optimization tweaks, the upcoming update will introduce a 'Story' mode that de-emphasizes combat and a cranked-up, more challenging Hard mode. The Story mode places a greater focus on narrative, allowing players to experience Dr. Reid's journey with less challenging combat. On the other end of the scale, Hard mode makes combat much more difficult. Players will receive less experience from killing enemies too, forcing them to rely even more on embracing citizens to grow in power.

Imo they shouldn't be ruining the current state of the game. The lack of traditional difficulty levels and allowing the player to choose if and on who to feed on was actually a great idea.

I'll jump back in for Story Mode. I was interested in the story and dialog bits but the combat was terrible.

Great, more game should have a narrative mode or story mode difficulty.

Fantastic news.

Heading off a couple of questions we've already gotten about this:

1. You won't be able to swap difficulty on the fly, it'll be a choice you make at the beginning of the game.

2. Only one achievement will be unavailable in Story Mode.

Will there still be an option to play the game at the default difficulty?

Picked this up on release but haven't had a chance to play it just yet, and I wouldn't want to miss out on the "base" game, for lack of a better way of putting it.

I really hope they introduce some sort of fast travel system at some point

so if you've already started the game you won't be able to switch to story mode? shoot

Huh.....if you abused the buzzsaw early on with a few good powers it was challenging for a few certain bosses, but always felt incredibly doable

More options though is good though......this game was my biggest surprise of the year

Honestly, I am going to buy Vampyr when things calm down after September.

The story mode sounds right up my street, and I watched a Let's Play video on YouTube a little while back and wasn't overly fond of what I saw of the combat... and neither was the person who was playing the game.

This sounds like a (good) developer who has listened to the feedback, and acted upon them, and is why people like us will happily give a game a go upon reading the various improvements.

Story mode O_o

At the beginning, reading only this, I was surprised.
(since I had already played and finished the game, and that this was already largely based on the story)

And I was surprised as if, for example, today announced that there is a story mode in Uncharted 4.
(an adventure game , already based entirely on the story, at the end)

But then, reading the info, I see that it is, in practice, an easy mode.
So, why not call it easy mode immediately?
(if this is based on, decrease the fights and the difficulty of battles and bosses, to focus on the story)

This is nothing new. Several games use "Story mode" meaning a very, very easy mode.

I agree, how you play makes up the difficulty by design, combat overhaul would be more worthwhile.

As someone who found the game way to difficult but loved the story. I'm really glad they are addressing it. I had to put the game down because I couldn't progress but now I'll definitely give it another shot.

Aren't these additional difficulty options, not altering the state of the current one?
They will affect how the game was balanced in the first place and that balancing was done very well imo. The game could become easy if you liked killing people or hard if you wanted to avoid that and you also always had the temptation to maybe drink someone's blood to make the next fight easier.

And it still is. In this thread there community manager just stated you can play on the default original settings.

I love options. Beat the game already and passed it along to someone else to enjoy.

Definitely think having a story mode is fine. I never felt combat was too hard and I only actually fed on one NPC in the entire game. However I can see that being hard for some people, I just had make sure my skills were built around escape and running past 90% of combat.

I do wish there was less forced combat in the game. That would make a real story game. Forced combat sucks. I would have loved a good subterfuge/confusion type ability that would allow you to incapacitate people and leave.

Story mode makes me much more interested in this. The combat looked like something I wouldn't enjoy, but the rest of the game seems cool.

Story mode is a good idea, but uh... I never fed on anyone (and gave XP up for some things too) and had an incredibly easy time by the end. Only time I really struggled was early on, and that's cause I was going to places decently higher than my level, and that actually got me more invested in the combat.

You got a ridiculous amount of upgrade materials just by opening every box and fighting here and there. Slap that on a good weapon (which I did by accident, at first, due to a similar icon to the weapon I meant to upgrade; best mistake I ever made in a game) and you'll be doing ridiculous amounts of damage + stun even without having super strong powers. And XP is easy enough to get from doing all the quests, so I still finished the game at level 26; some quests have really great weapon rewards too.

Honestly, what I'd want out of a "story" mode is better systems in place for warning you that the dialogue choice you're making will lock out a hint (because there are some very arbitrary ones where being nice actually locks it, or the choices look very similar but have surprisingly different tones), and for the quest system's bizarre handling of starting a quest (by finding the item for it) when you haven't been told about it yet but being immediately able to turn it in as if you had. By the end I was constantly checking guides so I didn't fuck things up, which spoiled me on a few things but I preferred that over dealing with how messy it could be.

In all honesty the combat XP being so plentiful already did that. Better to give folk the option to tilt the scales one way or the other than having a catch all default setting that can still be exploited.
Agreed. Hard Mode sounds more like the original vision that was pitched to us in the trailers and interviews.

By far the game's biggest issue, and a fundamental one. I really can't wait to play this new Hard Mode on a second playthorugh. It'll finally give me the Vampyr experience I wanted so much.

Why do so many people here read this as "we're removing the current balance setting" when it does not imply that anywhere?!?!?

Why are people shitting on the inclusion of an easy mode? If you enjoyed, or are enjoying, the game at it's current difficulty then this isn't for you nor does it concern you or your game.

I'm all for making a game accessible for more people. If that's by making the game easier then so be it. If it's making the game harder, then that's great too.

I enjoyed the game on normal but if I ever replay it it might be interesting to play it on easy and make it a more chilled and less tense experience.

I actually ended up enjoying the combat despite it being jankysouls. I didn't feed the whole game so a few areas were tougher towards the end. Any Souls vet would be fine. Hard mode sounds interesting because I was planning on a feed run at some point anyway.

Glad this game is getting some post-game support. I hope mini-map/better map markers come next. Just being able to see which doors are locked/unlocked would save soooo much time picking routes around the city.

Combat is fine, and its easy enough to dash away from most instances if it isn't your cuppa.

Combat was decent but got boring towards the end. Also the game is really not that difficult at all. Hope hard mode makes it harder than it already was.

I finished it and the combat was so, so average at best. Narrative mode will definitely be an improvement IMO.

I'm seriously on the fence with this game, last night I almost bought it, but then wondered if the gameplay was really as bad as what some players say. At 80$ it's a steep price too, tho a sale for it might not even come before Spider-Man releases either so waiting for one might not even be worth it before jumping in.

Game looks heavy on narrative, but I heard the story was pretty good with great voice actors and the characters were interesting. On the other hand, the combat seems to be it's weak point, but I wonder if that's only due to players not playing with the "exotic" powers that you can gain by being a bit less of a pacifist in your in-game choices.

Keep it on default.

Them adding more options for others doesn't affect you or the original difficulty.
I know nothing changes for me, I was referring to people new to the game. I realize that at the end of the day it's not my business how they want to play, but I know that at least in my case starting the first playthrough knowing that there are no preset difficulty levels made the whole experience a lot more immersive and the game itself more memorable.
