The 2020 Olympics may be so hot that the patience of the Japanese (?) may prevail over Africans in marathon races because the pace will be slower. This may be because of dropouts or heat-induced injuries but whatever. Patience!

e: Perseverance is a better translation here over patience.

"Patient" is not the correct translation, in this case 我慢強い would be "persevering".

I haven't seen actual newscast myself, but just looking at those pictures, it appears to be the opinion of a single sportswriter...broadcast on local news for all to see. Going by the Twitter comments, there's quite a bit of a backlash with most posters criticizing the content.

Just going off my time spent here in this country, I'd be *very* surprised if anyone other than the "Usual Crew" (i.e., racists) actually believed this.

edit: Also, as Garou posts, "patient" doesn't fit the term they used--more like mental fortitude (the ability to withstand high heat and push through it). That only makes it more laughable. lol

"Perserverence" would be the correct word but yes it's a blatantly racist thing to say. If you want to hear more bullshit like this you should google "Nihonjinron."

Come to think of it, anyone would be at a disadvantage of running a marathon in Tokyo, how could you resist stopping at every 7-Eleven and buying Melon bread? Shits good, yo.

It's so funny how idiotic Japanese television is. Thank god japanese people have brains and call it like it is on the internet.

re: hay fever in gaikoku

Well, I mean, I think it's more ignorance than anything. I don't think the average Japanese person "believes" these kind of fluff pieces. Nerima's a pretty old prefecture and it looks like daytime news, so probably just something for the old-timers. (speculation)

Yes, Japan has had some success with the marathon in the past, but I don't think anyone's actually going to believe that Japanese athletes are going to have the "mental" advantage here, unless this is some dog whistle calling Africans dumb.

Unfortunately, the average Japanese gobbles it up, like most bullshit. I've actually been asked, by a very good friend, "they don't have hay fever in gaikoku, do they??"
Well sure, you have your average idiot that thinks Japan is special because it has four seasons, but you'll find those morons in every country.

Uh, they realise Ethiopia, Kenya etc are pretty fucking hot right?
No, of course not. They have no fucking clue what the outside world is like.

First, let me say I love Japan. I love the country, the culture, and the people. I worked there for over two years and learned so much.

Unfortunately, one of the things that I learned is that a considerable amount of Japanese are racist. Not all! But quite a few. People would call me Gaijin right to my face. I know a lot of people see "Gaijin " as a neutral term. In my experience it was used as a derogatory term.

They're also saying that foreigners are in it for the money, while Japanese do it for honor

Sadly it doesn't surprise me. As I mentioned above there seems to be a residual exceptionalism about their self-perception as a nation that pushes them to elevate certain traits and consider those to be superior to other nations.

Japan culture has in general a weird fixation with 'perseverance'. Or capacity to 'put effort', or 'sacrifice' or 'iron will', they all refer mostly to the same. It's nothing new, it comes from ancient times, and it pervades their pop culture too.

http://www.ageekinjapan.com/perseverance/

Sometimes I think comments like the one made by the presenter in a very cynical way. They know their Japanese athletes are in slight physical disadvantage against other athletes, so they like to think they at least have an edge because the indomitable Japanese spirit. As if athletes of other nations won't have the same perseverance.

Did I mention he's an educated person and definitely not the first person I've met who has made such ridiculous statements? Every country has morons, but Japan has exceptional numbers thanks to nihonjinron bullshit.

Japan wishes it had four. It's two at most.

Have you not heard of Japan's 72 micro seasons?

Oh dude, I've lived here for 10 years. People still refuse to sit next to me on the train. People will straight up get up and move a compartment away the minute I sit down.

Not to defend the legions of morons the world over, but education doesn't necessarily preclude someone from being a colossal idiot.

ありがちょー mods for title change.

Out of curiosity what's the average for whatever the hottest month is in Nairobi or another major city?
It's pretty cold right now ("winter month", around 15-20 degrees celsius), but a warm month will be around 30-35 degrees celsius. It's also a very dry heat which may be perceived hotter than it is.

User Banned (1 week): Downplaying racism
You have to understand that there was no such concept as racism in asia, it was homogeneous society ( more so in Japan/Korea, less in China and the rest but majority of the people are from mongoloid race ), we didn't invade other country land and bring anyone in for slave ( only our people ), so yes, lots of people are less aware of racism concept. People can just make joke, or say things like that without any worry.

I'm not saying it is a good thing being ignorance, but you just need to see the context here. Asian culture background are totally opposite from the west. I mean it gets to the point where you can tell them it is racist and they might not even understand what does that mean. Hence racism joke, ads , etc all over the place not just japan but most of other asian countries.

The Olympics aren't an anime series.
It would be weird if a live event suddenly stopped like if we were suddenly shot into a pocket dimension, where a Japanese trainer explained to us all the weaknesses of each competitor, while his eyebrows twitched frantically due to his astonishment of what was going on.

It's 2018 and there's plenty of regular old racism in Japan

I wish there were a video clip, because I guess you could argue that x team has more endurance, but less speed than y team without it being racist (which is what the graphic says), but yeah, this is certainly something.

Not even 50 posts in and we've already reached maximum capacity for all the boilerplate excuses for Japanese racism. "Oh they don't know any better!"

That doesn't explain public perception and the laws regarding immigration in Japan though.

There may not be a direct correlation to racism in western countries if you literally go back centuries, but racism against other Asian people has been around for generations at this point.

And even if you do go back centuries it's not like there aren't equivalent issues. There are plenty of parallels between institutional racism and how an ethnic minority like the burakumin have been treated.

I don't think it's meant to be super malicious but having a giant アフリカ勢に比べ 我慢強い ↑ is definitely making some sort of claim about other peoples.
