this sucks. I remember a recruiter at my high school back in the day thats job before that was playing on the army baseball team. He was talking to all the kids about how the Army paid him to play baseball. The reality is that everyone that signs up needs to understand that they ARE going to iraq, afghanistan, syria or someplace like it. They are not getting paid to play video games.

alright man you wanna strawman some weird all military = killers argument then im not sure what to say here

this is just the army trying to do some good PR and morale, with hopes of showing how ~kwel~ the army is for the soldiers but alright.
Sorry I don't particularly appreciate the organisation that raped my home country and forced my family to flee. I guess when those soldiers massacred my family's village, it was just a couple of bros having fun!
So these soldiers enjoying themselves did that huh? Weird, almost seems to me like you're making a sweeping generalization of soldiers based on a few bad eggs instead of just acknowledging that this is a cool event for building morale in an organization that is not too fun to be a part of. I wish this type of stuff was around when I was in.
"A few bad eggs" this is the same argument they use for cops who ventilate innocent black people on a regular basis

This isn't actually true at all, you're more than likely to get stationed in Japan than the middle east, depending on branch. People actually begged to get deployed nowadays.

Let's try to stay on topic. No need to get mods involved. If you don't like something there is no need to post and derail the thread.

Lmfao "Soldiers train for the competition by improving hand-eye coordination, mental focus and reaction time. These skills help improve a Soldier's overall readiness to help with normal job duties. "

You know someone pull that out of their ass to get this approved by higher ups. Good for them!

Uh? You don't think it helps?

Of course all the active duty people I know are in the other branches.

Military gaming has come a long way from America's Army

Yup, and nothing about this event says otherwise. I didn't enjoy the Army too much, but most recruiters won't bs you on that, so I don't know what you're trying to get across. I was HR, (S1 for those of us who served), and I remember thinking that I wouldn't ever deploy because of my MOS, but my recruiter set me straight on that pretty quick. There's no manipulation here, just the Army taking steps towards improving soldiers morale as part of the new MWR mission I keep hearing about, and it looks like they're doing great work. I can tell you for sure that if this type of recreational activity was more widespread when I was in, it probably would have helped my depression a lot. There's nothing to be outraged over here, this is good for soldiers, and if you don't know the stress and heartache of being a soldier and you're taking umbrage with this, then you need a reality check. Being in the Army fucking sucks, but at least they're trying to give soldiers more chances to have fun now. This is all good man.

Regardless of your feelings about the United States military, this thread is primarily about a Street Fighter tournament. Please stay on topic.

This is a recruitment tool. Very cool, but they're very clearly trying to get people to join as recruitment has been tougher the last year (for obvious reasons).

I do like that this five Soldiers more to do, however, along side their battle buddy's. Gaming in the military is pretty big, and the MWR has been quickly adapting to accommodate those societal changes in the military.

Full disclosure, I'm prior service.

I'm interested in the depth of skill the Army guys have in SFV. Wonder if some of them play on a regular basis.

To paraphrase someone although I cant remember who "we judge ourselves buy our best intentions but our adversaries by their worst results"(im sure i butchered that). people that shit on the US military judge it by the bad eggs. not fair but good luck changing minds

Who's the tournament by again? How is it not on topic?

In the interest of not derailing a thread about a video game tournament, we simply are asking that we keep the scope of thread somewhat narrow. There are plenty of other threads where you can discuss your opinion on the military as a whole and its other actions.

This is a really cool thing. Giving these soldiers something fun to do other than just let Joe drink themselves stupid on a free weekend is always a good thing.

Kinda sad that this had to be pointed out.

But on topic, this sounds really cool. I'd love to see how deeply these actually play out compared to the pros.

If you take out the context of it, it's just another group hosting a sfv tournament.
That's news worthy how?

This. Soldiers get stir crazy, and being stir crazy when you're treated like shit all day never has good results. This will be great for blowing off steam

Im just not ok with the idea that the military is selling itself to people for something other than it is. They should be talking about their mission and how important that is as opposed to letting people believe the.y are going to play video games professionally.

Edit

"Giving these soldiers something fun to do other than just let Joe drink themselves stupid on a free weekend is always a good thing."

this is a decent argument.

It wasnt about how many were there, it was about often you were there. the rotations were faster and longer than normal in modern warfare. I persoanlly knew many soldiers that quit in their 16th to 19th year(not re-upped and throwing away retirement) because they were facing their 3rd plus deployment of 12-18 months.

During my deployment the "Fobbets" (asswipes who never left the FOB) played Street Fighter 4 competitively against each other. Held FOB tournaments and what not. I'm still salty that even though I had the same MOS as them and we were in the same company my ass was out the wire basically the whole deployment sleeping in ANP stations for weeks.

Soldiers tends to be huge gamers just because a gaming system is cheap and constant entertainment for the long term.

While I was in the Military Street Fighter 4, Fallout 3/New Vegas, Bioshock (the first one), and Guitar Hero (lol drinking time!) were huge in the barracks.

Edit: Soldiers, Marines, Air Men, Salors, and Cost Guard comes from all walks of life. From the projects of the South Bronx (like me) to the Hill Billies from the mountains of Tennessee (like one of my buddies). A lot of the time it's the higher ups forming these types of events and grunts like guys like me who would have to give up their personal time to make the higher ups look good. Just saying, the US Army is a faceless war machine with its history both good and bad that's made up of people that you would see at you grocery store or neighbor.

That's freaking AWESOME!

Glad to see soldiers having fun, they gave their entire life to the country (doesn't matter which country), I think it's ok to have some activity like this once in a while.

Hope they don't get destroyed on stage though, that would be...yeah.

I think it's okay to let Cammy compete... Chun Li too as I reckon foreign special forces/law enforcement should be allowed entry.
