As a newcomer, I played a bunch last night and found the weird little melee jump trick extremely helpful. For those who didn't follow the game at launch, you basically try to melee and use the jetpack at the same time. If you're successful, you'll lunge forward and travel quite a distance. Feathering the jetpack button will then allow you to go further with that modified jump.

Kotaku has a great article on it here: https://kotaku.com/no-man-s-sky-s-weird-melee-jump-is-still-the-most-fun-t-1797979942

Does anyone know if the flashing colors on the backpack of the character mean anything or it's just an aesthetic thing. Would be nice if they were an actual indicator of the characters status or something.

So, I found Lip-Elder Sprouts in a large ancient chest. It's extremely valuable, so I'm torn on whether I should save it or sell it.

I don't think it is that valuable based on the price. Save it.

So my first time playing was last night. I spawned on a planet with hostile weather and a drone shooting at me and killed me during the intro. I restarted and got a better, less hostile planet.

Yeah they realllly should have put in a check to only spawn on non hostile planets. My first planet had storms every 5 minutes, little resources and was -160 degrees at all time. Spent about an hour just dying before restarting the game and getting a better planet.

I feel like a lot of people are going to experience that and just get off and not play again because he game spawned them in a super hard environment

I inexplicably lost my suit upgrades for a second time, fucking bullshit.

Don't waste Nanite clusters on upgrades, wait until a patch or something.

Question, whats the path to get back to building a more advanced base and a Rover and stuff like the previous update? Will the main quest eventually get me there?

Third person view for your ship makes me enjoy this game SO much more.
Being able to see more while flying as well as seeing the trail my ship makes is awesome.
I feel like the first person cockpit camera is too rigid and just feels like I'm a guy flying through space, not in a ship.

This game is amazing now.
Yeah I'm surprised by how much fun I have in third person flight! Barrel rolling through those clouds feels so good. Can't get on with third person on foot though. I think the camera is just too close. Would love it if camera zoom worked like Fallout 4, using the mouse wheel to switch between first and third person, and at a zoom level you can choose.

No but other stuff will happen. Planets can get really, really extreme but it's not dependant on going to the centre.

Ran into the most hostile environment so far, and it was a moon. It was either extreme temperature or extreme storms. There was hardly any let up in netween. Visibility in my ship was almost non existent, couldn't see the planets surface. I got some good pics out of it. I did get some manage to mine and extreme version of copper called Activated Copper or something along those lines, that is only found in extreme harsh environments like that. Flipped it on the trade market for a huge amount.

Finally a survival game that has teachers the player instead of waiting for you to bumble around crazy as fuck

right?

I feel like they finally got their arms around a proper loop for this, although it is a shame that all that institutional knowledge that we all had re: Plutonium and the rest has gone away... but I get why they renamed everything. would be hell on searches/wikis otherwise.

Uhhhhhh, so I repaired a downed ship and went away from my other ship, but now when I'm trying to summon my old one to get it's resources, it says it can't be summoned because there isn't any launch fuel!

What do I do? Am I fucked? I had 1000 copper!

Edit: Teleported to my base and it spawned it inside my new ship! Ok then :P

Lol I was going around looking for Plutonium like an idiot. I like the refinery, I always thought materials should have multiple uses and can turn into different states. I like the Space Station redesigns inside and out. I hated all the useless hallways.

Anyone know how intensive this game is on the CPU?

I'm kinda not digging the performance on the PS4 Pro... I don't know if it's a bug for loading an Pre-NEXT save game or the game is always like this but I won't mind doubledipping if it will fix the framerate.

I have a Titan XP but only a 4670k. 95% of the games run fine but those really CPU heavy games freeze all the time.

Makes sense that the current console versions have memory leaks- the stuttery performance the more you play, the lag on controls over time, eventually crashing, is a sure sign of bad leaks. Can't wait for the patch, all I can think about is this game.

Died 8 times. On Survival difficulty. Gonna do the same and restart with a new world.

They actually had more realistic elements like this during the early pre-launch days, but for some reason changed it to all the fake names. I don't know if they did it to make a clean slate or if Sean really pined for realistic elements again, but I like it. Now if they would just make planets rotate and orbit and increase the day/night length, that'd be all the realism I need.

Honestly, I think they've always had some leaks and data corruption issues. Just worse ones right now. In Atlas Rises you'd start seeing weird issues and glitches after a while on PS4 if you just suspended the game after play, but closing down and restarting would fix everything.

Ok I need help. I sent my frigate out on a mission and it got critically damaged so I recalled it. On my freighter it says the frigate is in formation with me, but it is not. There's a red frigate icon on a nearby planet which makes me think it crash landed. I go to the planet right where the icon says and there's nothing but a mountain. If I land and get out of my ship, the frigate icon disappears and I have no way to reach my frigate because I don't know where it's buried.

Is this a bug? It seems weird that my frigate would crash land and end up inside a planet in an unreachable place.

I believe it was region locked in the limited multiplayer in Atlas Rises, so I suspect that's still unfortunately true now. Although you can join a session from people on your PSN list, so maybe not.

Why does every decent planet I find seem to have Sentinels that have watched Terminator way to many times?

Of the 5 or so systems I've checked out so far most of them are full of dead words, words with murderbot sentinels or extreme weather worlds.

Just can't seem to find a place to settle down.

I don't think we're ever getting planetary rotation. They talked about it pre launch; it apparently screwed up players in a big way when waypoints were constantly moving around. Now, I think there could be a solution for this... I noticed in NEXT that you can bulls-eye a pulse jump on the other side of a planet, and it will properly skim the surface without breaking the jump, and even drop you right *above* your target, for quickest descent, rather than the older "you dipped into atmo too soon" nonsense that could cost you major time. But all that said I think they had rotation in and took it our for what are probably pretty good (if irritating) playtest reasons.

Scanning and movement seem much slower that last time I played. I am only getting like 16K for a scan now too :(

Yeah, I know about their playtest stuff, but IMO people were confused because of bad UI, not because the whole concept is bad. Other space games like Elite: Dangerous have rotating planets.

yeah but Elite wants you to get flight paths correct and assumes you are kind of a technical player. you have to properly manage velocities and landing gears and all that. don't get me wrong, I love Elite. but NMS is a way more casual affair.

that said I'd love it if they just added it and set Planetary Rotation to OFF as default, but with the option to turn it on.

I almost wonder if they take a perf hit with the global illumination... I know lots of games can pay a real price for world shadows doing their thing.

So the game seems to block some quest to the team leader somehow?

I don't know, we are three friends (we all started from scratch), one of us started around an hour earlier. When we joined him, we played for a while until we noticed we needed an hyperdrive. Two of us didn't get a quest for that so we helped out leader to get enough materials to craft a warp cell for us. The thing is, we still didn't have an hyperdrive, we fooled around for a while until I got tired and downloaded the dlc airship that comes with an hyperdrive.
My leader gave me a warp cell and an antimatter for my other friend, he didn't have an antimatter housing at the moment and then he left. My second friend was having dinner so when he came back I told him "look, I have fuel for my hyperdrive but I don't have another warp cell for you, I only have an antimatter but we don't have a blueprint for an antimatter housing".

We played for hours trying to get a quest or blueprint (it doesn't help that our solar system has only one planet with no satelites and it's extremely hostile), finally I decided to warp to another solar system hoping that a new space station would sell me those but nope, no warp cells or materials or blueprints... and I have no fuel anymore so I'm stuck there but at least I can continue with my quests.

My second friend started a new game twice, both times joining me from the beginning and he didn't get the quests in each time.

Now he started a new solo game and yup, he got the quest.

However I don't know what should I do, I hope the new system eventually gives me the recipes but I'm douting.

This is what I actually think it happened!

My friend (the host of the team) was actually playing an old save of his, so when I saw him online I joined him with a new save. I was so unlucky that when I did that, my friend was actually playing on a system with just one hostile planet and no satelites, but since his save was old he already had all the tools needed to travel around the galaxy.

Me, meanwhile, had to play from start which means I had to complete the early quests and tutorials. I asume that the way the tutorial works is like this: "get your ship, fix it, leave this planet and go to the next, work there to build a base or something and then find your way to another solar system". So the game helped me to leave the planet I was on, the only planet in my friend's solar system, and when the game followed its normal course it sent me to the next planet to keep playing except in this case the next planet has to be on another system because what I mentioned before. That leaves me and my third friend in an impossible situation because our ships didn't have hyperdrives, and when we got the dlc one we couldn't get fuel unless our leader craft it for us, otherwise we couldn't jump outside the system. Now that I'm on the system I should be playing I can keep playing main quests where I suppose I'll find the materials and blueprints I need to craft warp cells.

Long story short, we need to jump between solar systems before the game wanted us to, so we can't.

In any case, we decided to start with a clean slate all over again. :/

This has become to best co-op game I have played with my wife in a very long time.

Made a brief and silly video of our time in it. 4 player freighter dog fight missions are a blast.

I am having a very similar problem. No matter what I do I can't seem to get to the waypoint of the downed ship? I logged off last night before resolving this, I'm hoping it fixes itself next time I log in? Otherwise Im stuck without a Frigate and will have to save up to buy one.

Sorry if this has already been asked.

I'm trying to equip my X O mask. I redeemed it fine. I'm at the appearance change thing and the helmet isn't there. Over read that it's number 12. Mine only goes up to 12. Am I being dumb? Anyone else had this issue?
