I did this years ago and honestly I regret it. Those old photos looked like crap back then yeah, but they become more valuable to you as time passes. And the memory function is really nice after all those years. I did make a new profile a couple of years ago and there's really nothing like facebook to set up meetings and checking out events near you.

Naw, too many friends world wide that I would want to hit up when I'm traveling internationally that I don't have on WhatsApp or Instagram.

Always hated FB since the beginning
I've never actually used it and I've never had photos or private information on it. I am aware that I missed the boat but after all the scandals and privacy breaches, I do not regret my initial decision. Still, being right too soon is socially unacceptable..

i deleted the app about 2 months ago, i can still log in, but very rarely do.

Deleting the app was one of the best things i've done, i feel liberated from my phone.

I also deleted twitter and instagram though

For the people who are afraid of losing their photos. You can easily download your photos.

As for making memories just take pictures and backup onto a cloud service going forward.

This sharing of photos and seeing other people's is not really needed.

I'm glad I have no Instagram, Facebook or Snapchat.

And I'll be honest my life has been balling as of late. Been to so many holidays, fancy restaurants, great sights and etc that would make great photos on Instagram. But having to show off your life is not necessary. It's funny because some of the most broke people are on social media trying to look like they are living the glamour life.

I find the responses from users saying that their feeds aren't toxic or they barely use it to be interesting. Your continued presence on Facebook keeps others on. How it directly affects you is only part of the issue with Facebook, it's that if it's the only means of communication between you and others - those others will check in hoping to hear or check up on you and others, and so on.

I use it for promo for a project... And old friends.

I would delete it if I could just use messenger. That day is coming.

Quoting for people deleting -- A good option is to download all of your data, and then upload your photos to something like Google Photos or some other photo service that you trust (and has good retention/deletion policies).

So if I download my Facebook-account (incl. photos, posts etc.) and delete the account, will they delete all information relating to me or will they keep it somehow?

There is a perma-delete option that requires a couple extra steps than the typical "Deactivate / Delete." This, according to Facebook, really permanently deletes your data... BUT... let's be honest, redundancy, backups, and web scraping means that your data is likely still preserved somewhere.

I actually find Instagram a better option for sharing and posting things....I get to share my art and I don't get any of the copy/paste replies in Facebook

I really only have Facebook for my business (dog grooming)

I have it up and running since it's nice looking at old photos once and a while, and for keeping in touch with old friends, but I've restricted my use of it very heavily.

Took the app off my phone and iPad and I only check it once or twice a week. I've been much happier because of it.

I like Facebook. Have had it since it was locked to college kids. It's great for organizing gatherings - though separately emailing you people not on Facebook and hearing "that's such a good pic, can you text it to me?" gets an annoyed chuckle out of me.

I have two facebook accounts, one for family and one for "friends". The friends one is mostly for online friends I'll probably deactivate that when I'm ready. For now I really only check both once a week.

Can't really. Too many connections.

This. Especially since I am in business school and a lot of the social functions are set up and talked about via Facebook.

I think it's great people are deleting it though. Especially if it gives you intrinsic joy and lessens stress as it appears to be doing for some.

I basically use FB as a way to stay informed about upcoming events and for one group chat. Everything else has been inactive for about five years. I never signed up with my real name and never uploaded a picture of myself. It's good to know that the old golden rule of the internet and childhood run-ins with authority ,"always use an alias", is still a good rule.

I really want to see linkedin burn to the fucking ground. I hate everything about that site.

Because it's a creepier version of facebook and people look at you like you're a leper when you say that you don't fuck with it. I also don't like that you're disadvantaged if you don't use it. I do my best to keep a low profile on the internet, linkedin is the exact opposite of that. You're encouraged to scream your name into the void and advertise everyone who you've ever associated with. Not my cup of tea.

LinkedIn is 100% transparent about what they are: A social network designed around creating connections for professional growth.

I deleted mine almost a year ago.

Turns out, I still have friends. Insane, I know. Instead of messaging me on the FB messenger, they text. Crazy, right?

I even still get invited to social events. Can you believe it?

Never had one to begin with, so problem solved. For *years*, every time family asked why I basically described wanting to not be used in the very sort of stuff the Cambridge Analytica scandal brought to light. The years of light ribbing over it ended when that scandal broke and now they mostly lament they're stuck, though their usage has mostly gone down to just using the event scheduling stuff or to message businesses.

Also not on LinkedIn - based on wife's experiences it seems I'm mostly just missing a crapload of spam.

Downloaded whatever data facebook had on me. Facebook makes it somewhat difficult to delete lol. They have an option to delete your account after death.......A quick google search gave me the link to finally delete. Its deactivated for 2 weeks before it gets deleted. Let's be real, I don't trust facebook to permanently delete it all.

Logging onto FB makes me depressed sometimes (and I barely even log on now), but there's a lot of old University friends that I value and can't find elsewhere.

Haven't had FB for a few months or more now. Feels good honestly, yeah a few friends I used to talk on there occasionally I haven't talked to but they have my number. I use Twitter now primarily.

Did it a couple of years ago, never looked back. If anything I have found that I try harder to connect with people whilst simultaneously dropping anyone in my life that never really meant anything to me.

While I have long deleted my Facebook account. I begrudgingly keep my LinkedIn.

It's usually the first place people I meet at conferences go to when it comes to keeping in touch. For that alone it is worth it.

I deactivated my account back in 2010 after being on for a hot minute and deciding it wasn't for me. I don't think it's actually deleted though. Someone want to give me a quick tutorial?

I wish I could abandon Facebook & all Google products. But it would be very difficult, especially Google.

I could leave Facebook, mostly just use it to see extended family updates. But it is also heavily used for events, many businesses only use Facebook for this type of thing and their own website will have zero info.

If you work in any sort of marketing / advertising / website SEO space, Google & Facebook are necessary and avoiding them would be a sure way to fail.

I get where you're coming from but if you're not using Facebook or updating it than your database becomes worthless for advertising and while I wouldn't put it past them to do shady stuff, them retaining your info after telling you it was deleted would open them up to legal exposure that wouldn't be worth the mostly (now) worthless personal data they have on you.

Deleted my Facebook over 3 months ago and don't miss it one bit. Don't have to use it for work or anything though, nor do I go to many concerts or events that would post on FB, also don't have kids, so I get where people are in a bind there. You'll also have a lot of extended family and old friends that think you blocked or defriended them so be aware of that as well lol

Thing is, even if you delete Facebook, they still retain a "shadow profile" on you. People without accounts still get tagged in photos, or have their information uploaded to Facebook when one of your friends shares their phone contacts with Facebook. Now Facebook knows you are friends with this person, and what your phone number/email address is. And if they tag you, also what you look like.

Not to mention tracking cookies / embedded like buttons that appear on many sites you might visit.

There is very little you can do.

Its really not that hard to keep in touch with people without FB. Seriously.

Email is still a thing. Texting / iMessage are still things. And of course phones are, well, phones. Discord, Slack, Skype and so on.

I've never had FB and I've never had a problem. Besides you don't need to be "you" to log into FB and you don't need to log in at all for a lot of it.

Honestly I kind of wish we would go a little back towards the 90s when people were a bit more ready to just pick up the stupid phone for an immediate conversation.

Something I've noticed with my generation is that communication is very passive and reactionary now. When texting was huge and new, I felt like people called and texted each other all the time. Now, my friend group struggles to regularly reach out and initiate hangouts with each other.

There's also the classic "You didn't know about that? I made an event on Facebook" scenarios where things don't get floated correctly.

It's all rather annoying, especially since Facebook's news feed and notifications have been screwed up for nearly 1-2 years now.

Is the perma-delete option easy to find? I want to make sure I do that, perhaps I'll try to get to it tonight.

Someone is trying to gain control of my account, if I take it down will they be able to enter my info? Or maybe this my golden chance to delete fb.
