How common is this war crime denying in the general population of Japan ? I've had a friend telling me he had also seen Hiroki Kikuta retweeting something along the lines that Nanking/Nanjing was a lie.

Very, very common. They don't teach their children shit about their wartime atrocities. The Japanese children are made very aware of the atomic bombs, every textbook I saw had a story about the incident at some point, but they aren't given a whole lot of context. Basically, they are taught that war is bad and they leave it there. So there is a considerable amount of ignorance on the subject. A lot of people believe it is more hazy and ambiguous than it actually is. It doesn't fucking help that their Prime Minister is a denier (or at least has been, there was a half-hearted apology at some point). It is also complicated by their previous emperor having been involved on some level with the atrocities (and pardoned for diplomatic reasons).

What is more interesting than our responses is those of the DQ fans in Japan.
What do they think about this guy?
Do they even care?

I asked my brother who lives in Japan and it's not really something the Japanese care about. His opinions horrible as they are, are known for ages. He's still considered a living legend or The Big Boss of music

I saw the article on Facebook, their Facebook page attracts some of the worst gamers like flies. I don't get it, it's not even anonymous either and people still share their bigotry. Thanks Kotaku for posting something.
I follow Naughty Dog on FB, and man, the outrage they and also Sony received when they changed their logo in June, absolutely disgusting. Fortunately there are also a lot of ppl dunking on these folks in the comments, but still. Just horrible, horrible people.
Edit: Almost forgot to mention, it's 2018, one thing they learned is that it's apparently okay these days to be vocal about that shit. I learned that the hard way last christmas with my brother-in-law, let's keep it brief and just say that meeting around that time won't be a tradition anymore.

1) About Japanese crimes in WW II - he is wrong and he probably knows it. Just check "Nanking massacre" in Google...
2) He is right about LGBT. "LGBT" is nothing more but another Marxist construct to fight with traditional Christian society. End of story.

That's one way to waste your burner account. Now go post about how you owned resetera at one of the other shitholes you frequent.

The "but his music is great!" argument: maybe the argument kind of meant something back in the days of the seminal DQVIII (if you're a person who advocates for a separation of the art from the artist). However his newer work sounds like absolute shit both in terms of composition and quality. It doesn't seem, to me, like there's much talent left for people to try to rationalize support for.

That Kotaku article's headline is equivalent to that "Protester killed by LAPD bullet" headline.
To be fair to Brian, I learned at the AV Club that the headlines are written by different people, and since they are owned both by Univision (hopefully will change soon, at least with AV Club) and both use fucking Kinja, I think this applies to Kotaku as well...?

Canceling my CE preorder. Only partly because of this but also just a ton of stuff coming out in the weeks around it.

Oh yes I saw that as well. I've never saw so many people quick to call others snowflakes so upset at a rainbow before.

Any company changing their icons to rainbows got a plethora of abuse.

I'm sorry about your brother-in-law. :(

Thank you, that's very nice of you. Will suck to not see all my sisters from now on, my mother called me the next day and told me that we won't be doing it anymore, she also had it with that shit, so I'll just visit her this christmas.

Glad to see a major game news outlet cover it, hope to see more outlets cover it as well.
At the very least I want it to reach the point where square makes a statement.

When I read all this posts telling people to be better than Sugiyama my mind reminded me of that thread in Off Topic where a poster introduced the concept of "Brogressive" to many of us: people who think they are progressive somehow but lack empathy for minorities.

"This dude is using his influence and money to push for his war crimes denial and anti-LGBT agendas! I wish nature do it's job sooner, the world doesn't need people like him"
"Yes, he's a horrible person (for denying the crimes his country committed when they were at war with us), but can't you just be better and ignore him?"

Uh... ok, I gladly will be the better person lol.
Unfortunately for you, you aren't.

Stop acting like we are here planning who will attack him and blow his brains out with a shotgun. "I can't wait until he's dead" is a perfectly fine reaction to hateful shitstains of humanity who laugh at minorities suffering.

Absolutely no empathy for their close ones either. If they love and support such a monster of a human being, fuck them too.

Well, Kotaku picked it up with a shout-out to duckroll:

https://kotaku.com/politician-made-anti-lgbtq-comments-on-dragon-quest-com-1827885043

It focuses on Mio Sugita though, but Sugiyama is mentioned
Glad to see it getting some attention at least. It's still shocking how despite this stuff being tackled quickly when it happens in the west, with a Japanese personality everyone just clams up.

If a Naughty Dog composer showed up on Fox News regularly as a commentator laughing at kids in cages, how would that go down?

Wow. Just like the other place I feel afraid of saying anything here now. I'm actually pissed off tho because people put words in my mouth. I did not set out to equalize anything. Obviously this dude is a horrible human being but two wrongs don't make things right and me saying this does not automatically mean that I'm putting those wishing for his death on the same level. Geez!

Perhaps people find it easier to rationalise and distance themselves from personalities' problematic sides when there's a language and cultural barrier in place. Can't help but feel that Neil Druckmann couldn't get away with even a tenth of the things Hideo Kojima's been up to without getting calls for his resignation.

You rolled in a very serious thread to post a lazy ass false equivalency saying that both sides have hate. In a thread where one side is denying war crimes and hates LGBT people. You put more effort into this post complaining about your ban than you did your initial post. Maybe next time put some effort and time in when posting about serious issues, and you wouldn't run into problems.

It's probably because it's more easier to do something about a western person in a west media than the contrary. It's why many things with japanese companies don't go anywhere most of the times. And they can't interfere unlike here as well since it's happening in Japan where they don't have influence.

Also, if a Pedophile like Kenshin author did the same in the west, he wouldn't be back on his job on few months later without any punishment by the jury but here we are with the actual reality where the contrary happened.

The "but his music is great!" argument: maybe the argument kind of meant something back in the days of the seminal DQVIII (if you're a person who advocates for a separation of the art from the artist). I mean, we're allowed to think that something is great even if the person is a shit. We're not talking about objectivity but subjectivity as well when saying things like that.

Maybe you should be afraid to post here if your first thought in coming off a 5-day ban is "I should continue wagging my finger at people who are expressing anger and frustrating towards an evil, despicable man." Maybe instead of stewing in your own saltiness for those five days, you should have asked yourself why it makes you more upset that people are angry at Sugiyama than you are with Sugiyama himself.

You seriously just bumped a thread about a man who laughs at the idea of LGBT people committing suicide to whine about how unfair you think your temp ban on a gaming forum was?

Christ. Like, you seriously need to step back and get a new perspective because your current one is really skewed.

Japan can be weird sometimes. Nobody cares about men like Sugiyama but the career of Hiroki Narimiya is over because he might have used soft drugs. It's frustrating but there's nothing you can do about it.

Well, all I can hope is that he dies and his replacement isn't a complete cunt. I'm not expecting anything out of SE other than a 'please understand' and a bow.

On top of my suggestions, Takayuki Hattori could very well replace Sugiyama for the soundtrack of Dragon Quest. His music is excellent and he also worked with his father on Final Fantasy compositions. Japan isn't lacking skilled composers who could boot Sugiyama out of this earth

You made a "both sides are hateful" post in a thread about an old dude laughing at the idea of LGBT people killing themselves while the other side wants the world to be a better place without a bigot like him.

What the fuck were you expecting?

I think Sugiyama is a fantastic composer... but Japan is not lacking in fantastic composers. Almost all of them would surely be less shitty than Sugiyama. Square won't replace him, but they definitely should.

Even that is asking too much. I can see them ignoring this and hoping people will forget. I mean, most don't really care anyway and will buy the games he is working on.
