I don't even understand why you would want to have shoes on all the time. It's nice to get those feet some air. Weird behavior all around.

We had some people over the other night and one guy wouldn't take his fucking shoes off. My wife wanted to let him in anyway but it was a friends friend and when he started to argue with me about the disadvantages of no shoes I told this fucker to leave and sent him away.

I really can't understand why somebody would get all the shit of the outside world into their home. Its animalistic.

It seems we have this topic very often. Not everyone is germaphobe incapable of not stepping directly into puddles of shit/piss/blood/toxic waste the moment they walk out their houses. Also mopping and vacuuming are things.

I remember going to friends' houses in elementary school and being baffled when they did this. My mom would make sure anyone visiting our house would have their shoes off before they came in.

Some people are just animals OP.

It's not like they meant to bring in the little flakes of dog shit, mud, vomit, drugs, food, etc and smear it all over their homes, so their babies end up crawling all over it and putting it in their mouths.

It's just that they're only slightly removed from wild animals and as such cannot fathom the need to separate inside from outside.

These people also likely follow the 5 second rule.

Outside their homes.

Truly disgusting.

Man do you have it all wrong, 3 second rule /s

WTF is that uncivilized behavior?

When you're outside, your shoes gather dirt and other shit. If you walk around inside with shoes on, you're spreading it all over your home and staining your carpet.

It's insane!

Even if I had 100% hard flooring, I would still leave my shoes at the door.

Fortunately, I have never had issues asking guests to leave their shoes at the door. So far so good.

Germophobes are the worst.

You think shit/piss is the only thing that makes this an issue?

I don't want to walk on dirt, gunk, or bits of leaves.

Can't imagine allowing others to do that, unless y'all have shoes on 24/7.

True story my wife's aunt has a strict no shoe policy and she NEVER mops the floor. I wouldn't be surprised if many germaphobes do the same being lulled into a false sense of cleanliness with the no shoe rule or maybe it's just laziness.

There is no meaningful advantage in keeping your filthy shoes on.

We only have carpet in the bedroom and none of us walk on a cold ceramic floor with no shoes anyway.

I leave them on, generally. Like someone else on here said, if I go to someone's house and they make me take them off I feel trapped. I also only wear hi top shoes and trainers so I have to pull them on/off and do the laces each time which takes ages. I get annoyed when I go to someone's house and they make me take my shoes off. I get it, but it's like they're telling me how to live and I stupidly feel a bit insulted.

Regarding dirt - in the UK we have these things called doormats which are for you to wipe your shoes on when you come in. They have a bristly texture which scrapes any dirt off your shoes. Obviously if you stood in shit you would take your shoes off outside.

Only dirty people wear their shoes in door. I bet those are the same people who only use toilet paper to clean their ass and piss in their own showers.

Really just depends for how long I go inside. Somewhere around 30 minutes or less? I just leave 'em on. Longer? Take 'em off.

It's just a comfort issue for me, though. My shoes aren't dirtier than most dogs, that's for sure.

There probably are more micro-organisms living in your kitchen and bathroom than immediately outside. Seems like a silly superstition to me. You generally wipe your shoes anyway before coming inside, if they are obviously dirty you take them off at the door.

I'd rather your stink feet than the fuckin unknown of everything else that's outside.

Besides if your feet stink, take some rubbing alcohol and spray it in your sneakers, it'll kill the smell. Maybe a little on your socks too.
This actually works? lol

About to keep a fresh spritzer of rubbing alcohol for some buds.

errr some cultures you dont walk around with any shoes on in some cultures you walk with some shoes on ... differs. Dont like it in your home ask ppl to talk their shoes off. Whats the big deal OP ?

In no culture is walking in with completely dirty soggy / dirty shoes which make the place a mess acceptable .... but thats kind of understood.

You know what's crazy to me? A carpeted floor.

Everytime I see that on TV I'm not sure what the fuck were you thinking when you covered your floor with carpet.

Absolutely disgusting: dust, dust mites and the constant fear of leaving a mark because you dropped this or that.

Marble/ tiled floor: just swipe and mop and you have a shiny floor as good as new. Better yet if you have one of those roombas.

I usually use slippers at home because they're more comfortable, but have no issues with regular shoes.

Can't beat a decent pair of slippers.

My sister and her idiot ex-boyfriend once stayed over at mine and i got into a heated argument with him over the fact that i expect guests to take off their shoes in my house.

"My shoes are clean though", "if you managed to levitate your entire life and never touch the ground then i agree, but unless you're Superman you can take your shoes off".

That guy was such a dick.

This thread topic resurfaces every once in a while. The answer remains the same. People don't take their shoes off in homes, when the floors aren't delicate, because they know what a floor is and what we use floors for. Tip for readers: Floors are meant to be walked on. You don't eat off of the floor. You don't roll around on the floor like a pig. You use it to get from point A to point B. And, when necessary, you mop and vacuum the floor, because duh.

I have this amazing technology installed by my external doors that helps to minimise the amount of dirt tracked into my house by my shoes. It's called a doormat.

Also, I vacuum my carpets and sweep & mop my hard floors regularly.

The Netherlands

The only people I know that wanted you to take of your shoes was at a friends place, and they had a massive farm, so I kinda get why. But they mostly walked around in workers clogs anyways so they just slip those of when inside. I'm not saying that they do not exist in The Netherlands, but I have never met anyone else that had a strict "no shoes indoor" policy. Personally, I usually take of my shoes when I get home because I want to change into something more comfy, but that has nothing to do with being a germaphobe. I have a doormat and as long as people use that, I don't really care. And I need to vacuum the place multiple times a week anyways because of our cats.

This was the first immediate change I did when I moved out of my parents .
No more wearing outdoor shoes at home!

I could never win that fight growing up, thankfully now don't have to, and I can just wear my comfy slippers and leave my dirty shoes at the entrance.

Thanks for the athlete´s foot OP.

If you are a visitor who cares. Wear outdoor shoes as much you want.

When you are living in the house you usually have house slippers for that.

No go in Germany and Asia. Can't speak about whole Europe but still having your shoes on in the house? Let your feets breath a bit and let the dirt outside. I would force you out for this shitty behaviour.
