Sega has dropped the demo for their PS4 remaster of Yakuza 3 in Asia:
https://store.playstation.com/en-my/product/HP0177-CUSA12961_00-RYU3HDCNTRIAL000

Should be up on the Japanese store soon, I'm away from my PS4 at the moment so I can't check the demo out until tonight but I'm very excited to give it a shot. Yakuza 3 ran at a sub HD frame rate on the PS3 at 30ish FPS, while the PS4 version runs at 1080p @ 60FPS (and I believe it has Pro support for 4K?) so these improvements alone are worth the admission cost for me.

If anyone has tried this yet, can they please confirm what part of the game the demo takes place in? The PS3 demo was an early Kamurocho chapter where you (story spoilers)
fight Kanda's men in Stardust and fight some Men in Black agents in a back alley
.

Cutting out content and making it physical only makes it bad imo.
Kenzan is physical only. And that's pretty much the best Yakuza game. So that's a moot point in my opinion, digital would be nice but its not "worst game ever" material. As for cut content, yeah that actually is a very good point, but this thread is about "Ryu Ga Gotoku 3" not Yakuza 3. We know the Asian version features all content bar a couple of hostesses who are replaced by newer ones. If the English version once again cuts content I'll be complaining yet again like I did back in the day.

Fight me - every Yakuza with more than 1 (maybe 2) playable characters are worse in general, so Yakuza 3 is ok in my book (if not good!)

I agree. Stories are better when they don't get muddled. I love the gameplay on 4 and 5 but the stories suffered. I did love how 0 did it though, so 2 characters work well enough in my opinion.

Already derailed over the first post in the yakuza thread which has nothing to do with the topic in hand

Good job for getting people excited for yakuza !

Yakuza 3 is one of the best in the series. And it's Takaya Kuroda's (Kazuma Kiryu's voice actor) favorite. He told me himself.

Yakuza fans certainly are passionate! Once I get the game downloaded tonight I'll try writing up some details on the demo, really excited to play a smoother version of 3 :)

Have you actually played the game? Or are you just referencing that bad Gamekult review? As most Yakuza fans actually like HGG, including myself. The combat and bosses blow the past games out of the water.
I know the guy who wrote the review and if he didn't like the game I'll believe him. I also saw him stream the game and it did look bad.

I'd probably rank Y3 on the lower end (not that it matters since every Yakuza is amazing), but the soundtrack is among the best.

I also have to imagine playing Y3 in 60 FPS will be awesome, because the PS3 version kind of chugged at times.

So that's a no then. Fair enough, as I've seen the review and disagree with most of it beyond the complaints about the game being short and not close enough to the HnK story. It was always billed as a Yakuza themed HnK game and that's what we got. With excellent combat and boss fights, if you believe its worse than the original Yakuza or Dead Souls... nah. Not close. Even at its worst its still better than both of those.

Calling a game like Yakuza 3 the worst just shows how high the bar is set for the franchise lol.

But no its dead souls.

3 is not the worst, not after I played it.

The worst would be 1 on the PS2.

Excluding the meh story too, the game-play & control in 1 is so clunky, both my wrists got sore.

Even Dead Souls is much better game than 1, in my opinion.

Downloading the Demo now. Just played through Yakuza 3 this year and I will give impressions.

Also Kiryu without his cigarette looks awkward lol

Also Yakuza 3 is one of the most important games. It's also the one Yakuza game which has a true family and imo it's also the most emotional one.

I played, and reviewed, Hokuto ga Gotoku as well. While it's not perfect, it's a good game and not nearly as bad as some say it is.

This is great news. Eager to see the improvements in IQ and framerate for myself.
The worst yakuza game
1 and 4 are worse.

I played Yakuza 3 when it was first released in Japan. It's overall a good game however the story is a little let down. I'll try this remaster next month.

I can play ps1games theres something off with playing 4 after playing 5 zero and 6.

I was playing 4 before they announced the PS4 port and it's not that bad. Main problem is the low resolution (and maybe their AA tech, assuming there's one) that makes everything look blurred. The PS4 port should fix that, hopefully they'll also polish some of the character models (main characters are fine but some the hostesses look terrible).

Loved the final stage theme where you are just beating the shit out of tons of people to this thumping piano beat.

Yakuza 3 was my first and will always have a place in my heart. I still think Yakuza 4 is better in pretty much every aspect though.

I'll try the demo out of curiosity but I just finished it this week on PS3. I'm probably going to start 4 this week actually.

The resolution is appalling on PS3, a rerelease will really help. Though I thought the game was a drag with all the orphanage sequences that make you carry out very menial tasks with the kids while some serious shit is going down in Tokyo.

Can't say I'm excited about this, out of the main games I think that Y3 and Y5 have the least interesting stories, and thus little motivation to play them again. Good for those who never played the original game though. But who knows, if it gets a western release I may buy it anyway whenever it gets cheap.

I do look forward to the Y4 PS4 port though, really enjoyed that game, especially with the introduction of Shun Akiyama (who was really awesome in this game) and his secretary Hana (who unfortunately hasn't been seen in any game since, I think she had like one line over the phone in Y5 and that's it).

Just to nitpick, Hana was in Dead Souls (though not nearly enough of it!), she briefly spoke to Akiyama in 5 (though never appeared in person) and actually got some screen time and one great Karaoke song in Ishin. Hopefully her and Akiyama get more screen time in Shin RGG.

Yakuza 3 is still a great game, but it's also the start of another character arc for Kiryu that eschews a lot of the build-up and continuity that the previous two offered. It also removed a bit of the gritty, grounded drama into full-blown modern japanese melodrama.

I'm not gonna lie, I bawled like a baby during those dramatic scenes, so I'd still play it again.

Just played the demo and ran around Kamurocho. Prerendered Cutscenes are not remasted (I think? it was too blurry like on the PS3), but everything else is big big improvement. Game looks really great. Feels a bit like Yakuza 0 now (excluding gameplay where the heat moves still suck). Good remaster imo.

Good to hear :) What did the demo have you doing objective wise? (also were there any mini games to try?)

It's Chapter 1 of Yakuza 3 so you can do everything in Kamurocho I think. Haven't visited everything, but it's open for you. So I guess mini game wise everything is included. Don't know about the hostess mini game here, but I could check that later (Haruka won't be amused lol)

Oh sweet, thanks for confirming :) Different demo to the PS3 demo then (which took place later in the game).

Also after trying the demo a Yakuza Kiwami 3 is not needed. That would really be a waste of money for Sega so I am glad they decided to take this route.

So you're wrong. I played Chinese version of Fist of the North Star: Lost Paradise and it's pretty solid. Nothing mindblowing or "the best game in RGG formula" but really solid experience. Art-style, battle system, side-quests, exploration, ton of fanservice - maybe you should pick English version in October?

Sometimes I hate ERA because I come in to talk about my favourite franchise and idiots start derailing the thread to the ground from the beginning. Shame on you all.

Back on topic, 60 fps is superb. Almost no load times when entering and exiting stores, which is fantastic too. The voices seem to be all the same, no re-recordings as far as I know. Also the non-prerendered cutscenes are now in 60fps, but on OG PS4 they drop frames at random moments, not a good sign. Otherwise it's 3, as you'd like it, perfectly preserved, aside from the hostess stuff. The prerendered cutscenes look awful though, tons of aliasing.

You can't skip cutscenes though, don't know if this was from OG 3 or a demo thing.
