I can see why people might not want to label themselves as "male" or "female" (whether just on this board or IRL). Would Resettlers be more willing to provide a pronoun (such as "they") to allow for ease of conversation? Is there concern that having an open entry field would result in troll responses? Would he/she/they/unspecified options be reasonable in that case?
To avoid misgendering others, I default to referring to other posters in as gender-neutral terms as possible (repeating username, "OP", "the poster", and on occasion, they/them), but the end result ends up stilted.
