Fez is a perfect video game. I hope we see another game from Phil Fish someday, and I hope he's doing okay.

Let's not just place all the blame on Gamergate for this. That's highly unrealistic. This community *old site version* alone spent ages nonstop talking shit about him and digging up and posting things about him fanning the fire. Not that he didn't already do that shit himself on his own.
This thread is revisionist history at its finest, the guy was 100% out of control in his public presence. A complete asshole who showed no maturity or respect to the gaming community at all and thought he was king of the world after releasing one game.

If you're going to stop working on an art piece because you're listening to people who can't create your art, your expression and emotion is getting repressed. Everyone else moves on, but a piece of art is usually created because it's apart of them. If it can be thrown away because of other people, I can only imagine he was making it to please others rather than please himself which means it probably wouldn't have the same heart as the first one.

My problem with Fez is that while it was expertly designed, it was maybe not quite as fun to play. I actually finished the game and can't tell you anything about it after a couple years.
I mean, again, there's a difference between talking shit about them, and trying to actively discredit them by claiming that they're a fraud and providing false evidence saying that all of their accolades are fake.
I didn't see it live but if memory served, Phil's 1password was cracked and everything, EVERYTHING, got released.
Fez is a classic that i still regularly think about and the cancellation of Fez 2 still stings. There never was an experience quite like playing Fez on release again. Figuring all that stuff out collectively and unveiling some crazy stuff in a 2D game specifically designed to hide things almost in plain sight.

Social media is a blight. It brought out the worst things in a clearly creatively talented individual and that was met with toxic garbage that literally bullied an all-time game in to not getting a sequel.
If anything his self-inflicted lack of public presence over the last few years suggests maturity, growth, and change.
Fez was genius, but if it's better for Phil Fish's health to not be making games and staying out of the public eye, then who am I to argue? We always will have Fez.

That was a really stupid thing to say, but he said it when there was a definite downswing in the quality of Japanese games.
A lot of publishers were still struggling with HD development and others were going after a western audience and the design of their games suffered for it
He shouldn't have said that, and it was rude to say that to a Japanese journalist, especially when Fez is so clearly influenced both visually and in terms of design by Japanese games, but I think he gets too much shit for that comment, and it's aged really badly considering how Japanese games have made a huge comeback after last gen
Fez wasn't really for me, so I can't say its cancellation is something that bothers me, but the reason why it was cancelled was super unfortunate. No one deserves what happened to him, and bringing up the bad things he did kind of misses the point, in my opinion.

His comments and actions in public can HARDLY be limited to those "two comments", I could rattle off another 10 to 15 disgusting outbursts that made him public enemy #1 in the video game community. If you don't think he brought it upon himself, I don't know what to tell you. But he absolutely did, whether he deserved it or not is another question entirely, but none of those things would have happened if he didn't act in the way he did.
I'm all for defending Fish because fuck Gamergate but that's still a shit statement to make especially since the guy who asked him seemed pretty cool.
The "japanese games suck" comment was blown completely out of proportion. I feel like anyone hung up on that are just looking to hate. Its like when Josef Fares said "Fuck the Oscars" at TGA and people got overly offended completely out of context.
Couldn't have said it any better. The best puzzle game I have ever played and I enjoyed every second of it. Hoping that II will release some day, this time with 3.5 dimensions or something, but yeah...
