People spend hours watching gadget unboxings on YouTube, but you rarely see a box that's designed to be opened with just your teeth. That's a design consideration that Microsoft has taken to heart for its new Xbox Adaptive Controller packaging. "A lot of these limited mobility gamers are actually used to opening packages with their teeth," explains Mark Weiser, a packaging designer at Microsoft. "We wanted to avoid any damage."

Microsoft has created packaging that includes loops, multiple access points, hinges, levers, and ribbons to make it as easy as possible to unbox this new controller. Even the outside of the packaging that the main box will ship in has a loop that can be peeled away to reveal the main box. The main box includes a ribbon that can be pulled to activate a flap that lays flat to cushion the controller once a user pulls on the loop to remove it from the box. It's a fascinating mechanism that shows the level of thought and detail that went into designing this.

The Adaptive Controller is so cool, man. It's such a feel-good thing. When Phil Spencer was on the Giant Bomb E3 show talking about how they're not making a profit on this this, it really proved to me they're doing this out of the goodness of their usually-cold corporate hearts. Little touches, like the packaging being this easy to open, just goes to show they're really putting a lot of consideration into this, too. It's not some afterthought. Good on them.

That's awesome. I've done a lot of volunteer work with adaptive athletes and I love seeing inclusive stuff like this.

Also I open all packaging with my teeth. RIP teeth. Lol

Nintendo and Sony should think of making their own version of this quite soon.

Phil Spencer has already said he is will to share the tech and collaborate with anyone:

https://www.dualshockers.com/xbox-adaptive-controller-phil-spencer-accessibility/

Specifically, Spencer commented on the motivations for Microsoft behind the Adaptive Controller and that the company's sole goals with the new hardware is to make progress in providing more accessible options for gamers, and not for business or competitive purposes.

Spencer stated that "I will never turn this into a Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft [competitive] thing," and instead explained that he is "completely open" to the idea of collaborating with "literally anybody who wants to learn from the work we've done here–or even try to do more than that with the work we've done here." Ultimately, Spencer said that the company wants to "just allow more people to play," given that accessibility and catering towards those with disabilities has long been a challenge in the games industry.

That's awesome they went all the way with it. Honestly wonder if it's easy for some one with such a severe disability to sync the controller as well. Like if some with that disability can get through the entire set up process.

It would have been a huge oversite to ship this in a shrink wrapped taped seems box. Lol

That's so good on Microsoft to think about literally everything with this product It's going to be such a boon for gamers with disabilities.

I can also see how the product would be amazing for people creating their own Custom controllers or Arcade Sticks. Really amazing product all around.

Super good. Should be standard for all packaging. Accessibility options are good for everyone.
