Don't know why. I suspect it's because I think of forums as being more of a community hub so it doesn't matter what image I use. Plus let's be honest you're far more likely to get into a disagreement with someone on a site like this than the likes of Instagram and Linkedin because their models are based on the individual user rather than the wider group so why give people the chance for an easy shot.

I decided I'd have a username and avatar that fit each other.
I'd rather feel I'm anonymous here.

I don't like real pic avatars. They're terrible. My avatar is a statement, it's got meaning. My face doesn't.
Because I don't necessarily feel my face is a contributing factor to discussion on a board centered around videogames. Also, there's a lot of personal, somewhat intimate stuff that gets talked about on boards like these and I don't want to feel hindered in discussing these topics just because my face will irreversibly be attached to that statement. I feel the recent backlash against prominent folks in media/entertainment is cause enough to prefer to stay anonymous even if I will never in my life willingly make a racist, sexist or misogynistic comment.
Also, I prefer to keep a low profile on the internet in general. I don't need people finding my messageboard posts from a decade ago when they google my name or reverse image search my face. I deleted Facebook for that very reason and I don't use or read Twitter.
Say that this board at one point gets exposed for having some sinister folks on it, or pedophilia charges or what-have-you. I'd prefer to have a barrier between me and direct association with these people.
But I do try to stay accountable for what I say and/or do on a forum like this. If something I say is wrong and someone points it out, i'll own up to it without rocketing into defense-mode. So in that regard I already feel i'm doing my part on making this forum a bit more hospitable.

Why the hell would I use a photo of me? I'm not posting under my name, I mean I'm not particularly hiding anything but the icon I use is a running joke that's been going on forever (I said it sounded like the seagulls were saying "Mike!" cue several years of having that shouted at me at university.
It's not like this place is somewhere that requires real serious profiles or anything...so it gets the online version of me.

Pretty much this. You can reverse image search a face because most people just recycle pictures between sites. I'd rather not deal with that. They can even search out your username. So I just went generic. I only use this name and picture combo on this site.
