No offense but having the most popular superhero doesn't do you any mystique points.
You're not wrong but if I don't know what someone looks like and I see their name pop up enough, I begin to associate them with their avatar.
I don't mind people associating me with a picture of Spider-Man.
Cuz I know enough about the internet in 2018 to do at least the bare minimum to not make my personal identity known where I don't want it to be.
The real reason I do it is that I have serious problems with my perception of myself. I spent most of my life convinced I was incredibly ugly, so by forcing myself to show my face to everyone I interact with rather than hiding behind other images, I become more accustomed to the idea that I'm normal.
Plus, I've been involved in forums like this for nearly a decade, so if you really want to find out who I am, it's not like I can stop you. The use of an avatar that isn't me doesn't protect me from anything.

I feel like it gives you some level of accountability.
