Octopath is basically everything I wanted out of the Bravely series. It has beautiful environments, good music, and a great battle system. Bravely unfortunately had that but bundled it with some of the absolute most aggravating story and writing I've ever had the displeasure of witnessing. There was something supremely off-putting about the story in the first two Bravely games that I can't really put into words.

If they actually do a Bravely Third I'd want them to nuke everything about the world and characters and start anew.

For me it's kinda the opposite. I prefer what BD not second(I liked second enough but honestly in my eyes it's very mediocre in its retreads) did story wise a lot compared to octopath. Story wise octopath is very vanilla in a way and honestly not all that ambitious. It is mostly stuff I've seen before it's very competent though.
Bravely Default felt very fresh with it's telling fairy tales in a way that doesn't coat up the fucked uppedness of fairy tales with its asterisk holders as well the way the main story went meta was very unique and memorable to me(and I totally get the complaints how that strikes out gameplay wise but honestly it's pretty comparable in its reptitiousness to octopath just a different brand.).

If we're talking general characters though I'd give it to octopath. Bravely Default creates very simplistic characters that aren't really meant to me much more than your average fairy tale character(characters like red riding hood aren't exactly character studies). So it's fine in my eyes for what it is but yeah Octopath does a lot more in the way of fleshing out characters, contrasting them to mirror stories and exploring interesting quandaries.

I was waiting for Octopath to be more cute to be honest but it isn't that type of game. In the end I'll remember it for being the best turn based combat in forever + having a very good soundtrack. (although I probably still give it to revo comparatively)

Wow, using Inquire/Scrutinize on specific, then-unnamed NPCs who go on to be important chapter characters.

I swear Arianna was an unnamed NPC when I was just exploring Stillsnow. I think it just named her "Pretty Woman," and after I inquired I was pretty taken aback at her dark backstory.

Then I progress Mai Waifu Primrose's tale, and lo and behold that Pretty Woman becomes named and a major part of the chapter.

I love this game.

There was just something that really irked me about the dialogue specifically in Bravely. It was almost as if every character was talking in a circle and the same point was made about 5 or 6 times every conversation. It was infuriating in a way I haven't noticed with almost any other RPG. I'm not sure if the writing was that way in the original Japanese or what was going on. My wife actually noticed it too when she played.

I've only seen Caits in optional caves/dungeons so far. I think that would explain why I didn't see any until 18 hours or so.

I really don't remember that. I did play in Japanese though. But to be honest all those years back I also wasn't really apt enough to really judge any japanese text on its literary soundness.

I assume Caits only appear in areas in which your level is below the recommended one

They no longer appear to me in the first areas but I entered a Lvl 45 cave and got like 3 fights in which 2 appeared at the same time.

Hmm, that would make sense as well, I did see a number of them when I started venturing into the optional job shrines.

I'm quite enjoying myself so far, though I'm extremely early on. This feels like the first decent JRPG of this type since Radiant Historia. It's very refreshing.

The framerate and visuals are a bit of a shame. 30fps with poor framepacing, noticeable input lag, sub native resolution, and a really noticeable lack of texture filtering. It's a shame because the overall aesthetic of the game is great.

Well, after spending time grinding yesterday and preparing....I finally beat the final boss.

I appreciate that that major fight ends and goes into a short cutscene with no voice acting and ends suddenly with no "fanfare" or sense of achievement...but hey at least I got 100,000 money and a ribbon that lets me avoid fights?

Seriously disappointing, expected SOMETHING more than that. At least voice act it like it's an important scene. You killed/sealed a dark god. It's more of a superboss than final boss I guess...

In the dungeon Maw of the Ice Dragon south of Northreach, you can get encounters where all three Caits show up. Great place to grind.

--

Talking about Bravely, I really really want another game with that combat system. I like what we have in Octopath, but the depth is far lower here. The world map approach felt slightly better to me because it gives a better illusion of a large world, and having airships also helps with this. I also enjoyed the characters and their interactions. Bravely also had amazing QoL features which honestly should be part of every JRPG as far as I'm concerned.

But Octopath does a lot of great things as well. I feel that the path actions like Inquire, Purchase, etc. are one of the best systems ever that really add so much more detail to the world. The amount of work required to put this much detail into NPCs and world building definitely deserves praise. The way these path actions naturally tie into side-quests is also amazing. Having 8 different stories allows that people will likely connect with at least a few.

In terms of art and music, I feel both games do an amazing job.

Both these games are great I hope these devs continue making more stuff like this. This game will probably end up being my GOTY this year.

Does the Extra Experience skill only apply to the character who equips it, or does it get applied to the whole party? Trying to sort out my pre-final boss grinding.

Wrapped up Cyrus and Therion's stories today, and unlocked the Sorcerer job as well. Lots of new sidequests involving the supporting cast have started popping up, which has been a welcome surprise. It's also been fun seeing the hints at the endgame content come together. My main complaint so far would be that the combat has gotten too easy, but it sounds like the endgame will do away with that.

Are the side dungeons in the opening loop supposed to not have a boss in them? Or are there some sidequests later on that sends you to them?

I've peeked into a couple of them and cleared out the ones I could but there always seems to be a room that looks like there should be a boss encounter when reach them, but they've been empty so far. Starting to wonder if this is intentional or there's a trigger I haven't found yet.

2 encounters with Chubby Caith's so far, 2 immediate flees on the first turn
Any way to stop that or is it just RNG?

Party wide. Same for JP skill.
Thanks!

If there's an area in a dungeon where it looks like there should be a boss fight trigger and it doesn't you likely need a sidequest in order to trigger the boss to spawn there.

Some sidequest dungeons do have no bosses, though.

Is that seriously it? They give you an item that lets you avoid fights after the point 95% of people will stop playing the game? Well that's super disappointing. Still going to try and beat it when I get there, but everything I hear about this endgame boss sounds really annoying.

RNG. You can use passives that increase your chances of surprising your foes, but again, it's luck.

You can give high speed gear to some of your characters so they have a higher chance of going first.

How much HP does it have?
I got to go first last time but the 11 damage I did wasn't enough. I'm gonna use a large soul stone next time I see one

I am having serious trouble getting into this game 11 hours in. Idk why but the game is kind of dragging for me. I am on finally getting the final party member in my group (Alfyn) and it feel like im just going through the motions. Does the game ever evolve from story - dungeon - boss - end chapter?

Thanks! It was starting to grate on me a little that I kept hitting these dungeons and clearing out the loot but never finding a boss to close it out. That puts my mind slightly at ease :)

Nope, not really. While I love the game, if it's not your schtick, I'd drop out now.

I actually disagree while still finishing chapter 1s. The gameplay opens up quite a bit after getting the sub jobs and the stories get a bit more interesting too. If you're still bored after playing through a bit of chapter 2s, then yeah I'd agree.

19 hours and haven't started Ch. 2 yet. But I'm just about done doubling back through the intro towns to deal with any sidequests I can before moving on to Ch 2. towns and finding the job shrines.

Would it be better if I did the secret jobs after finishing the Chapter 4 (so I have better equipment) or before?
Doing them after if probably better when you're fully prepared with good gear and enough JP to tweak your strategies. Having said that, you can beat them earlier, and then get to use these jobs against more enemies and chap 4 bosses.

At least for me, I rolled through chapter 4 w/o any grinding or real difficulty.

I did identify a few secret job shrines, but didn't attempt to tackle them. Now I am heading into chapter 5 quests with levels ranging from 51-24. I am keeping 3 semi-perm char, and just subbing out one as needed for quest.

At this point, I have visited all chapter 4 towns and I do plan to go tackle the secret job shrines before starting any ch4 quest.

Amazon Japan listed its next shipment on Aug 6 while Yodobashi Camera was taking reservations with this Friday as ETA. I wasn't as thrilled as some of you on the demo but I couldn't risk losing another chance of missing out on what is generally received as potential GOTY material. I'm a jaded JRPG gamer but let's hope the game is as good as they say.

Is there a way to know Primrose's current summon? Not seeing it anywhere in the menu (but then again... I'm not actually sure I have a current summon lol)

Hit Y while not interacting with anything and bring up "Part Ways". You can review your summon before choosing if you want to dismiss them or not.

Fair point. The game doesn't really deviate from the loop of story, dungeon, boss, end chapter, though. There's exploration and sidequests in between, but that's accessible from after you complete your first chapter. I don't see anyone not liking this game 11 hours in and having their opinion changed once the sub-classes unlock. But I could be wrong.

My most requested feature improvement for the sequel or OT:FTS: Ability to fast forward cutscenes. Give me a line-by-line animation skip, ffs, not an all-or-nothing cutscene skip.

What is the "Acid Blue" skill exactly?

Also I wish there was a pop-up or something when one of your character gets enough XP to buy a new skill.... Unless it's there and I missed it.

Im in the ~60hr range with 2/8 chapter 4s done. A whole lot of that time is inquiring, purchasing/stealing, and dueling people in towns.
