https://m.imore.com/apple-pushing-out-performance-fix-macbook-pro-2018

"Following extensive performance testing under numerous workloads, we've identified that there is a missing digital key in the firmware that impacts the thermal management system and could drive clock speeds down under heavy thermal loads on the new MacBook Pro. A bug fix is included in today's macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 Supplemental Update and is recommended. We apologize to any customer who has experienced less than optimal performance on their new systems. Customers can expect the new 15-inch MacBook Pro to be up to 70% faster, and the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar to be up to 2X faster, as shown in the performance results on our website."

The 70% and 100% improvement figures are compared to the 2017 models, as stated on the Apple website. This update won't actually improve performance by that much, but should alleviate the excessive throttling found by users. It will still throttle, of course, but less so.

We've "fixed" the thermal management system.

Ahh, thanks for clarifying.

That's a hell of a thing to miss before shipping these out if that's what it amounted to. Glad they fixed it. Egg on my and others faces if this lasts long term. Granted earlier today I caught a Reddit post about it being a vram problem more than anything else.

Early benchmark comparisons on MacRumors forums for the i9 are quite positive.
The MacRumors forums are blocked at my work for some reason. Any benchmarks for the i7 (15") models? Apple claims all 2018 MacBook Pros will benefit from this update.

Edit: MacRumors forums do seem to be working now. The impressions for the i7 models are positive as well. Good!

People were swarming over the story about the throttling. I wonder why this is barely getting attention...

So I won't feel ripped off when getting the $2,500 15" MBP 512GB? I might purchase one today with Beats headphones.

I guess some conspiracy or apple hatred force is being implied here but in general there is much more to comment on when a product is released with problems than when a product is fixed and performing as it should.

So it wasn't because of insufficient heat dissipation after all? Or are they just going to be ridiculously too warm all the time?

I'm not convinced this is an entirely solved issue.

This is surprisingly fast from Apple. I'm impressed. I don't think they've ever rushed out an update so quickly for any of their products.

Looks like they changed max boost wattage from 125w to 100w and max sustained wattage from 100W to 50W.
If you are playing demanding games in Boot Camp you might want to limit power draw to about 35W in Intel Extreme Tuning Utility.

Otherwise there is not enough heat dissipation to run both the GPU and the CPU. You will still see steady clocks in the 3.6Ghz range.

Looks like Apple got caught again limiting their hardware due to overheating concerned and "fixed" the issue when enough people bitched
