Forsaken, the landmark 1998 console and PC shooter, will be the latest remaster from Nightdive Studios, launching on July 31 for Windows PC on both Steam and GOG.com, and Xbox One, the studio announced today.

Nightdive is taking care to remaster the work in a way that will remind fans of the game, more than just give it a modern-day makeover, said Nightdive's founder and chief executive Stephen Kick. The original polygon counts of objects in the game will be preserved, he said, but thanks to the Kex remastering engine Nightdive has used in dozens of projects, it will all perform at 60 frames per second. Original versions of the game struggled to hit half as many fps.

"This is how the developers saw themselves," Kick told Polygon, "this is the goal they had in mind, they just didn't have the hardware at the time. I feel like it's the ultimate experience for Forsaken."

Forsaken was a first-person shooter offering six degrees of motion and perspective, building on the tradition and appeal of titles like Descent. It launched on Nintendo 64, Windows PC and PlayStation in April and May of 1998. Probe Entertainment and Iguana Entertainment were the original developers; Acclaim was the original publisher.

Acclaim went bankrupt in 2004. A big part of the challenge in what Nightdive does is tracking down who now owns the rights to classic games that are long out of print. "The toughest part of our job is doing the detective work in finding out who has the rights now," Larry Kuperman, the studio's director of business development, told Polygon.

Sometimes, Kuperman explained, those who own an IP aren't necessarily developers or those with experience in publishing, so it can take a lot of conversation to put together this kind of a deal.

"We were successful with Forsaken, but it took quite a bit of time to get the folks involved with it to recognize there is an opportunity," he said.

Honestly, I've always wanted to play it, so I guess now would be a good time. Good studio :).

Now they just need to finish System Shock :).

Uhhhhh honestly, I'm a little excited.

I still remember when GamePro gave it like 2.5s across the board while I was enjoying the shit out of it at the same time. I think Forsaken, of all fucking games, made me take critics a little less seriously.

I remember getting lost in Forsaken 64. I regret selling it as I've always been curious what a more seasoned gamer-brain would do with this game.

Making me think NOLF is right around the corner.
Never did play it back in the day, but I do remember the advertising campaign of the half naked female with the tattoo on her cheek or hip, the post apocalyptic wasteland behind her.

I know it's not quite the same but couldn't you still do LAN parties and just have everyone connected to the internet? Or maybe (if we can host our own servers) just host a server locally? I guess we'd need more details on how MP works.

God, Forsaken. I'll always remember this for a) winning me a Spaceorb controller at a LAN party, b) how awesome the flak cannon looked back in the day (ooh so sparkly), and c) the so-90s-video-game-it-hurts marketing that involved the naked lady on the NA box art. (There are versions of that art where you see the ENTIRE naked lady. No, I still have no idea what on earth she had to do with the game.) It's not Descent and never will be, but yeah, I'll probably play this again.

Apparently Turok on Xbox didn't have local multi but the Steam version did. Hopefully the Steam version has local as well.

I loved how the team handled Turok 1 and 2. So definitely curious to see how this looks/plays.

Are they done with Turok though? I need Turok 3 remastered.

Really enjoyed this game, picked it up for both N64 and PS1 as they were very different and both quite respectable in their own way.

Forsaken was a beautiful game, but it was punishingly hard and not all that fun to play. I have a feeling all those Acclaim games run on the same engine which gives me hope for a Shadowman Remaster.

This generic seattle band album cover image has been burned into my memory ever since. I never even figured out what kind of game forsaken was.

I remember this add in ALL the old gaming magazines...

But, I never played it, and now that I can see it, I don't think its my kind of game.

Forsaken 64 was a big deal at the time for being one of the first games to introduce a special kind of colored lighting that followed your shots/torpedoes in game... which was a feature normally reserved for PC versions of these kinda games

It has literally nothing to do with the game itself, right? It's such an odd, very 90s cover. I find myself randomly thinking about it when I think about video games in the 90s. As inexplicable as it was/is, they did a good job of creating a memorable one.

Where is Powerslave EX already?! It was practically done before they even got the dev of all these remasters they released onboard. That said when it comes to games like Powerslave and Forsaken they should try to offer a package of all the different versions. Primary at least. So add Saturn version for Powerslave (but not the bleh PC game which can't even be called a version, just another game with the same name), and iirc the N64 version of Forsaken was different enough maybe? I forget.

Forsaken...man what a weird, cool game that was. A woman on the cover that had nothing to do with the game, a space biker, a fetus character...

The concept was cool, but I felt it had lackluster design. The music sucked. Multiplayer was where it was at.

wow what a blast from the past. i actually revisited this game a couple weeks ago on my n64 and i could only make it past the first level because the controls are inverted and you can't un-invert 'em. i think that was the issue i had with this game when i played it as a kid too! it'll be amazing to play this with m+k.

Forsaken on the N64 was the worst version though, what is it with the remaster looking like it is using N64 textures?

Does anyone know what the relation of this was to Descent? From memory it even looked like it was the same engine but that's going back to when it was released.

Edit: No mention on Wikipedia, I guess it was a coincidence. Fergus McGovern headed up the project too, RIP :(
