Nothing of this resembles Phantasy Star OR PSO. I wonder what other classic JRPG is going to get a bizarre mobile sequel. We already have this, Breath of Fire, and Mana (or is that a remake?). Lufia? Lunar? Suikoden? Ogre Battle?

This is my Phantasy Star:
This makes me feel sick.

The original game's artwork was so awesome.

The thing is, they totally don't need to sacrifice original gameplay. both Valkyrie Profile, Star Ocean and Tales of the Rays, retain their core combat mechanics. Sure, they are simplified...
But that in itself is not automaticallya deal breaker, especially considering portability.

Yeah it doesn't even reference any period of the franchise except for the Dark Falz part. There's no reason why they can't look like the more recent games in the series... Even though I never played any of the online games...

I think BoF6 at least still has some resemblance to the previous game, like a waifu/moe-fied art. This doesn't even attempt to look like any PS game...

This art is vomit-inducing. It wasn't enough that they ruined Shining Force huh. >_<

...one of the things that I gave Sega credit for is that they at least didn't attach their old brands to their countless mobile games.

lol, this is from PSUblog's article:
"Fans of the Phantasy Star series will recognize staples of previous works, such as [Idola], the ominous term that has come to be associated with the music of Dark Falz."

Every mobile gatcha game looks the same. Do Japanese mobile developers ever innovate beyond the 'Lets see if we can gets some whales for our product!"

Like the artstyle and designs. Although going for a more old school look could have been cool as a eye catcher in between all the games with modern artstyles

Gameplay looks very FGO esque.

Disappointed that a mobile game is their way of celebrating such a franchise

Seemingly, Sega often produces dissimilar games on mobile for several franchises like Soul Reverses, Border Break or Shin Megami Tensei (I'm not sure for the last one).

There is still a chance that a proper console game be released in the future. (SR has reached the arcade 18 months later with opposite art style and gameplay)

Mobile games will never need to be my future because of all this backlog.

Thats where I'm at. There are so many amazing experiences I could probably stop playibg new releases for the next 5 years just to catch up with the shit I have missed.

Well I honestly hope it works out and is enjoyable for those who like mobile games. it's just not for me and that's okay. Always a bit of a downer to see ip's I loved and grew up with not getting a proper console/pc iteration but thems the brakes I guess.

Wow, the chara design is terrible... Good lord.

Also, what's up with female characters having that little thing on one of their legs ?

This game seems like a bunch of overly safe decisions that don't really gel with the franchise at all, but at the very least I'd love to see an unrelated 30th anniversary artwork similar to the 20th anniversary poster.

latest

I just don't get the sentiment that either the First Series or Online designs or styles are anywhere close to being played out or are unable to be used as a foundation for something new but familiar.

If Octopath Traveler can do an update on an old style why the fuck can't an actual old franchise like PS get it right?

Just give me a PSO Episode 1 & 2 remaster.

You know this game will have an unfathomable amount of micro-transactions.

Mobile gaming was a mistake.

Besides Cosmic Star Heroine, there seems to be at least one upcoming game that seems to follow the classic Phantasy Star aesthetic.

Seriously, that place looks just like Palma.

Interested to know if there are any other games that borrow heavily from the classic Phantasy Star look.

On-topic: I didn't expect anything and I'm still disappointed.

My biggest gripe is that this isn't even remotely Phantasy Star, style is medieval fantasy not sci-fi, the artstyle is nothing like the original series or any of the online games, the only relationship to the story of any of the series is bringing up Dark Falz/Force, its basically a completely different idea. Which is likely why the real name is Idola and they made Phantasy Star a fucking subtitle which personally just pisses me off because this was teased as a Phantasy Star project and dared to include a 30th Anniversary icon as if this game was apart of celebrating the series 30th Anniversary.

Fuck Sega. Not only do you waste celebrating the 30th anniversary of one of your more iconic series on some garbage mobile game but the only reason the title include Phantasy Star in the title and is likely just a marketing ploy to give it brand recondition. Fuck that, I didn't expect much from this announcement anyway but to use the series name on its 30th anniversary as a fucking marketing ploy to sell something completely unrelated is insulting to the series and to its fanbase should you be an old school fan of the original series like me or a fan of the more modern Online titles.

Can anyone please explain to me, why every western fan acts as if PSO2 is some super unreachable japanese exclusive? Is there some sort of religion that forces people to pretend that a constantly updated, piss easy to install english translation that has all of story, quest objectives and UI completely translated, as well as ship2 server that is crawling with westerners you can talk in english with, doesn't exist?
He pretty much refuses to play PC games for some reason. To be fair, PC gaming to someone who has avoided it all their life seems super overwhelming.

Life is easier if you pretend Sega closed when Sammy bought them. Also it doesn't take that much pretending.
SEGA's had a rough few years every now and then, but let's not get crazy. Some of their RPGs are wonky and Sonic Team is still fucked, but the majority of SEGA's current releases are excellent (masterpieces, even) and in the recent year they've done a great job at focusing on games for their longtime fans.

I went to check out this game on Steam. Then realized it was already in my library.

But it is still in Early Access. Is it worth playing or better to wait for full release (when?)?

Disgusting. Can't believe they still churn out fucking Sonic games while IP like this gets relegated to the mobile trash heap.

Is this going to be released on consoles? Because I would love to try it on Switch.

That was my exact thought too. Holy shit the art looks awesome, then it transition into aweful generic anime.

This is in no way awful or "generic anime". t's not because it's modern that it's trash.

It's a manga artist working on it either way.

#NotMyPhantasyStar

This is my Phantasy Star:

Well, for sure it isn't. It's not the 90s anymore. Not like that type of art from the 2000s wasn't already there at the time.

Hand cramps, crummy mechanics, gacha shit and games usually being shut down in 2 or less years?

Can be your future, sure won't be mine. Shame about phantasy star.

I don't play mobile games. Mobile games still are the future because it's the biggest gaming market on every country.

And JRPG have a big market in japan in mobile as well with many older audience playing on it with those games that they played when younger but now on their phone.

Life is easier if you pretend Sega closed when Sammy bought them. Also it doesn't take that much pretending.

Sammy and Sega merged, no one was bought. Sammy has nothing to do with it at all, it's on Sega.

The structure is like that:

Sega Sammy Holdings
Sega Holdings Sammy
Sega Games

I don't understand what you mean by saying they are the future. I mean yes, they pull more revenue for sure due to install base (everyone has a phone) but console and pc games will always be there. When the next mobile game gets as big as GTA or skyrim, I may change my mind...well Pokémon go is pretty big but I feel that is kind of an outlier
