INTRODUCING NEXT (UPDATE 1.5)

Update 1.5, NEXT, introduces a full multiplayer experience, near-unlimited base building, command of freighter armadas, a graphical overhaul and more.

This update marks the two year anniversary of No Man's Sky, and a lot has changed. Please see Atlas Rises, Pathfinder, and Foundation for previous major updates.

This is an important next step on our journey.

────────

Multiplayer

────────

• Team up with a small group of friends and explore the universe together, or be joined by random travellers.

• Help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.

• Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies.

• Group up to build communal bases, farms, and racetracks, and share your creations with all players online.

• Explore the galaxy at your own pace, or progress together from the very start of the game and all the way through the story.

• Progress together through the tutorial and story, or explore freely.

• Invite your friends aboard your Freighter and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commission Station on your bridge.

• Communicate with other players vocally using a headset, and / or converse using text chat on PC.

• While wandering the galaxy solo, continue to experience chance encounters with strange floating orbs.

────────

Community Engagement

────────

In-Game Community Content

• Soon after the release of No Man's Sky NEXT, Hello Games has planned its first season of weekly content and community events.

• This will be free for all players, with no microtransactions. Take part in these community missions to unlock new rewards and customisations.

• Players will also be able to interact with Xbox One Mixer streamers by helping or hindering their gameplay.

Galactic Atlas Website

• NEXT marks the launch of a new website dedicated to the community, which we're calling the Galactic Atlas.

• The site features points of interest in the No Man's Sky Euclid Galaxy, and will grow in functionality and expand over time, in part through your feedback.

• Key Regional Hubs are marked, with discovery statistics and community events appearing soon.

────────

Base Building

────────

• Bases can now be built anywhere on any planet, high in mountains or underwater.

• Hundreds of new base parts have been added to unlock more creative possibilities.

• Teleporters can now be built anywhere on the planet surface, and the teleporter menu has been reworked for ease of use.

• Base complexity and size limits have been dramatically increased.

• Players can own multiple bases, spread across regions, planets or star systems.

• Sculpt the terrain around your base with the improved terrain manipulator.

────────

Third Person

────────

• The game is fully playable in third or first person, both on-foot and in ship.

• Ship controls in both views now allow for true low flight mode across the surface of planets.

• Communicate with other players using expressive gestures available from the quick menu.

────────

Character Customisation

────────

• Construct an Appearance Customiser in your base or freighter to personalise your appearance.

• Play as a Gek, Vy'keen, Korvax or Traveller / Anomaly.

────────

Freighter Enhancements

────────

• Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates, each specialised to excel in combat, exploration, trade, industry, or support. Command your frigates from the bridge of your freighter to complete real-time fleet missions.

• Call on your fleet for assistance in space battles, or deploy them to help you explore a specific system.

• Improved freighter base building allows for a truly custom capital ship.

────────

!

As someone who has played much since launch, this sounds amazing.

EDIT: Damn, all of this sounds amazing. Actually quite excited about jumping in tonight.

This game might actually be worth picking up now. I hope I can find a bargain bin copy somewhere still for PS4.

This is incredible. Really looking forward to the XBO reviews and meta. I don't think I have ever seen a game make so much money with so much criticism. It's created a rare situation where the devs are loaded financially, but have a huge chip on their shoulders. They could have walked away with the money and just went on being hurt by the criticism. But instead, they did this. NMS2, for free. Like I said, incredible.

It is worth noting that the only way you see other players actual bodies are if they are in your party of four right now, otherwise you still see them as a orb, per the patch notes.

I think I'm okay with this. I'd hate for someone to roll through and grief me. Still, I'd imagine the chances of crossing another player are pretty slim unless you're specifically trying to seek out orbs in populated places.

I think the "areas of interest" where weekly quests are will be the only place we see orbs, which will be cool to see 3 parties of 4 doing the same quests, but two of them are just floating orbs (or glitches in the simulation, as the game lore would put it).

As someone who has never played but thought the core loop of collecting resources sounded super repetitive, does NEXT make that loop more varied and interesting? Thanks!

Incredible update! I love that they paid so much attention to the fundamentals like the early game intro and UI instead of "only" adding massive features like multiplayer.

There was pre-launch footage of players seemingly running into others and seeing character models. The orbs are possibly seen by players choosing to play "solo" (without PvP).

That's my reading as well. Orbs are relegated to Solo play.

I'll have to check and see later for sure. My reading of the patch notes seemed to suggest my initial statement, but I can see how the "solo" line in that patch note means that it could be a specific option.

What a great surprise for me, I'll be picking up another copy so my husband and I can start a new game together. I only played about 30 hours maybe back when it launched.

These changes seem so good.

Yeah from early streams there were people running into player models that they definitely weren't grouped up with

In its current state, do you think an 8 year old would have fun messing around in this game?

Someone in the OT reported encountering another player model on their starter planet without joining a group.

See this is why I rebought this on Xbox, it's basically a new game and I'll be damned if I just accept something like this for free.

You haven't played since launch.

Oh Lawd.

Then you ALSO need to check out this page. https://www.nomanssky.com/release-log/

You've ... uh... missed a bit.

Also, check out the well done OT for more info. The launch experience is a pale shadow compared to now, and if you put 30 hours in at launch, you'll be getting a lot more on this one.

Question, is the survival aspect on a fresh game still as annoying to deal with now? I didn't like survival games back then but I have even shorter patience for constantly hunting for iron or whatever it was to recharge the suit.

Even on the hardest difficulty there isn't constant hunting for anything once you figure out how the game works, ex. running and jet packing constantly is very draining. But still, there is a creative mode now for those who want no challenge.

I'd love to know this too. It's the main reason I avoided the game.

The loop of collection/crafting/light combat is still there, though there is more to do. Faction standing, missions (which got further expanded), base building, freighters, frigates now, multiplayer now, and more. But that loop is still there, albeit deeper than at launch.

Nothing is stating exclusion of features for GoG purchasers, so I have hope. My excitement is being revitalized.

So all I really want now is a legit terraformer, lol. Let me go to a run down solar system and bring a planet to life!

(I'm only being partially serious here).

Excited to get home, especially since the Terrain manipulator isn't as resource heavy (I believe?). I want to see if I can carve out a lake somewhere (does the game still fill tunnels below sea level with water?).

I played the game for 30+ hours when it came out, but I revisited it after one of the bigger updates and decided to restart and it just put me off.

Maybe the creative mode is where to go, but I want some challenge/enemies and all. It's just that first 2 hours or so before some suit upgrades that it was annoying.

If it was annoying for you on normal then probably the game just isn't for you. When I played default before they introduced survival it actually turned me off with just how much of a push over the resource challenge was.

Most excited about 'true low flight', though I assume you still can't 'crash'? I wish they would rethink how 'rigid' the fuel consumption was with regards to take offs and landings.

I wanted to revisit it as I loved hunting broken ships and repairing them.

Since a big part of this update is improved space combat / interaction I wanted to check it out. Resource management of your suit isn't the sole aspect of this game.
