I can't think of a less risky game than GTA5

The only risk is that they wouldn't be able to produce enough copies.

I don't personally think it would've bombed. I'm theorizing their reasoning for not porting it, and that seems like the most realistic answer from their POV. I doubt they view the platform as a serious AAA contender.
None of that really matters. It's a major GTA game. It'd do well on ANY platform

Porting games to Switch is piss easy. It's delivering an optimised experience that's probably the issue. That's perhaps why GTA V hasn't happened yet.

They are probably waiting the right time to port GTAV, when the userbase will be big/mainstream enough to maximize profits.

Between this Holiday and the next is my bet.

That Team Squirrel dev really pulled a Wii U port on WWE 2K18 lol. Jeez.

That's cool the other games did well to meet their expectations.

GTA5, RDR, Max Payne 3, Bully. Port em all to switch and I will buy them.
To this day I have no idea if this is true or not but RDR code is a mess, that's the main reason that there is no PC port (I find it funny how in one of Take 2's investor meetings they were asked if RDR2 would get a PC port, people know that it would sell a lot, despite being released later than the other versions the PC version of GTA V still managed to sell over 12 million copies), so getting RDR to run on N/S would possibly be a big under taking that Take 2 does not want to do unless it will make them a lot of money.

By the way dumb but serious question: How much did Doom sell on N/S? Some one here might now but I don't think I heard anything then it just sold well was all.

Bully is very possible

I will say, after patching, NBA 2K18 runs really well on the Switch. I played exclusively handheld and being able to play myGM mode on the go really sold me on the "full game but portable" experience. It led me to preorder NBA 2K19, and I rarely preorder games.

Why weren't GTA 3, VC, or SA ported to the Wii?

Why hasn't any mainline GTA been ported to a Nintendo console?

People need to wake up to the political realities of the gaming industry

can I get my portable GTAV now?
I wouldn't hold my breath.

Here's the deal.

I'm going to take you on a wild ride kiddo's. Time to put on your tinfoil hats.

GTA has sold hundreds of millions of copies to.... let's call them Ben and Jerry.

Ben and Jerry have had a longstanding golden relationship with Rockstar/Take Two for damn near 20 years. They've made hundreds of millions together. Ben and Jerry even pay the out ass for exclusive marketing promotions. Take Two/Rockstar is very happy with them.

But hold on, some guy named Simon enters the room. He's not interested in paying for exclusive marketing promotions but he sure would like GTA.

Now sure, Take Two/Rockstar can sell millions of copies to Simon, but in the grand scheme of things, it's not going to be the same level of sales they have built up with their Ben and Jerry fanbases over the years.

Ben would prefer that Take Two/Rockstar only do GTA business with him and reluctantly that other business mogul Jerry, and not have split his cut in the market with Simon as well as Jerry.

and to this Take Two/Rockstar say......

Yes

I believe this is the reason they brought it over. Releasing games with the "download required" disclaimer likely destroys sales potential as well. When the larger game carts are available, they'll likely release the high profile titles like GTA.

LA Noire let them get their engine in order, and test the waters where there relatively weren't a lot of potential sales to lose.
I don't think that would be the case considering the engine LA Noire use isn't RAGE.

As for GTA5 coming to Switch, I doubt it. Their biggest money maker and feature is GTA Online and they cut off Last Gen to be able to make bigger updates and to lower the porting costs. I do not see them making a port without GTA Online because people would complain it isn't there and they wouldn't get any MTX money.

Who knows though, Rockstar is Rockstar so maybe they might decide to port it.

You view the games industry as more nefarious and with more backdoor shady deals than what actually happens in reality.

The truth is that Take Two wanted to just test the waters. LA Noire was already getting a remaster and ran on lower hardware than the Switch, so it was more of a "why not" move to check how the market responded. It seems to have responded well. That doesn't mean Take Two's gonna just funnel money into GTA 5 on Switch though.

Realistically we'll probably see a $60 collection of the Android ports of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Why? Because 80% of the work's already done. They already run on lower hardware, they're already fully functional on the Tegra X1, and they can fit them all on a cart for pretty cheap. And if they charge $60 for the collection people will still say it's a bargain despite costing 4 times as much as the 3 are on Android currently.

I'm not saying they should port RDR. But I'm not not saying that either.

I feel like GTAV might be a shoe-in at this point. If only because of the potential multiplayer revenue.

So from what I understand from your post, MS and Sony teamed up and paid Rockstar to not put GTA on Nintendo?

IMO given Rockstar's current business plan, they probably won't be bothered with GTAV on Switch because they can't monetize the shit out of it like they did with PC Online under Nintendo.
I believe the "Online" has already become the game.

GTAV's never coming to the system, and frankly you'd be highly naive to think otherwise. There's a slightly higher chance of some of the older games being released on the Switch but, even then, that's still about as likely as the console getting a post-VII Final Fantasy game, and that's to say there's next-to-no chance of it ever happening.

The most we can expect from Take Two are the NBA 2K games and the occasional minigame collection. Expecting anything more is expecting waaay too much.

I still think GTA is coming. Pretty sure Vern was one of the first to mention LA Noire's existence and definitely the first to mention it for Switch. He said the one everyone is expecting is coming. Unless he meant RDR, can't imagine what else that could mean.

EDIT:
Said R* has another game in dev after LA Noire. Most people assumed GTAV. Which is more than fair. Why this game hasn't seen the light of day yet I'm not sure, I've been told it's still coming.

As a handheld-only Switch player, I'd be more interested in versions of Civilization Revolution, Borderlands and X-Com if they were going to do put development effort into projects other than sports and minigame-shovelware

I certainly can see the mobile versions of GTA3, Vice City and San Andreas coming to Switch, but GTAV? That would be great, if they can get Doom, Wolf 2 and Skyrim on the Switch, a Xbox 360 port/version of GTAV on the Switch is possible.
