Man, I'm just looking forward to when both the far left and right realize that utopias are flawed concepts and that it's ok for people to live their lives in peace despite regrettable things in one's past.

Just to be clear. I'm fine with jokes and comedians taking heat. I just hate when people are disingenuous or ignore context in order to do it. Critique what the joke actually was, not a hypothetical construct you've imagined. Coming in to broadly declare "Rape is bad. Child abuse is bad. Anybody who would defend a joke including those topics must be a creep or advocate those actions." isn't actually insightful or helpful to discussion.

I mean, we already had both of those concepts in R&M at least once.

Morty fends off a rape attempt from King Jellybean (and Rick kills him after noticing how shaken up Morty is) in an episode where the post episode stinger is the villagers finding (presumably) child porn belonging to Jellybean and they're disgusted by it. They ultimately decide to burn it because they want people to remember what the king symbolized instead of who he truly was, and then the camera pans back to reveal a statue of Jellybean with his hands on a child's shoulders.

Nobody batted an eye when that aired.

nice icon, someone blowing their own trumpet really fits you

guess this thread is just the sass thread now

"I'm not angry at this extremely lame throw away joke that someone made without even referring to me. I just took a random jab at Miles Davis because I was reasonably calling you out."

Look for real, if I got on your nerves, then i'm actually sorry for that, my bad. I was really just trying to goof around.

Lol, "can't be forced to learn" to laugh at rape jokes. Stay classy guy.
Didn't ask you to learn to laugh at rape jokes.

Did ask you to learn about the context of a larger stand up bit you derided upon seeing a meme image quoting fifteen or so words from.

Not surprised you intentionally conflate the two ideas for your flawed reply.

You can use ignore.

People saying the alt-right played the left like a fiddle when the truth is they played centrists who'll take any opportunity they can to start bleating about "outrage culture" and "political correctness gone mad" the second someone dares suggest rape jokes are perhaps slightly distasteful like fiddles instead w h o o p s

It's actually both.

Centrists move right, and leftists squabble.

Some people on the left really do not have a sense of humor. People need to lighten up sometimes.

Is this a multi-generational thing or primarily a millennial thing to be outraged about jokes?

Maybe you should stop to consider the fact that some people don't find certain types of jokes funny and that the context you provide won't automatically sway them to your side. Instead of saying dumb things like "your opinion is wrong", "can't be forced to learn".

South Park is finished.

EK5K935.gif

There was a huge thread on this board against South Park(and at the previous place). It's a bit bizarre to have people mention it here as a defense of anything to be honest. Harmon is probably safe. Adult Swim is not like Disney and frankly this is the kind of stuff to expect from the Rick and Morty co-creator. If there was an alt-right plan to get him fired it will fail badly.

In last week's Carlin thread, I said that he had the benefit of being popular before social media's rise.

I have zero doubt that Carlin would be viewed differently if he were still a practicing comedian today.

That would be sad. I am sure he would have some strong opinions about all of this sensitivity.

I mean, the main character of his immensely popular show has a running gag where he belches in the middle of talking. Regardless, the jokes in the pilot were not low brow, but the vehicle to deliver them absolutely was.

Isn't one of the central conceits of R&M taking heady and philosophical sci-fi ideas and contrasting them with dumb gross out humour and a completely amoral lead character? That discrepancy is what makes it funny.

Man, I wish Carlin were alive today.

I think people mis understand this quote, assuming that quote is correct.

First off, it's debatable that "porky raping elmer" is hilarious, but let's say it is funny, is rape the funny part?

No, it is not.

The "funny" is about taking wholesome elements and putting them in a non wholesome situation, it's edgy humor 101. Winnie the pooh asking piglet to shoot him before he turns into a zombie is funny because it's a situation completely dissonant with the characters. Kizuna AI saying Fuck is funny because she's supposed to be a wholesome good girl japanese idol. Those memes about the green M&M telling people she will kill them unless they get her a copy of Snow white for the PS2 is funny because it's completely absurd situation completely removed from what the character is supposed to be.

Rape is not "funny" on itself, creating an outrageous, absurd and vaguely comedic situation were rape is involved can be seen as funny, but this is besides the Rape element.

Everyone once in a while you see a story about something that get filmed and you wonder "How did no one high up say no?" This is one of those stories.
Channel 101 is an open-to-anyone shorts program. You submit a short, they air it for an audience, their reaction/votes decide which shorts come back for an episode 2 and which ones get dropped for a new batch the following month. So there wasn't really a "high up" to say no to it in this case, or Harmon himself was "higher up" than any of the judges. I assume that's also how the wretched Rick & Morty pilot cartoons got into Channel 101 as well.

Probably me 10 years ago.

It will be the wake up call for many. It's time people get an education on the social media they use, how it's easy to check your post history and the consequences what you said can have. We are getting many textbook examples of how things can go wrong lately. Some unfortunate while others were deserved (Roseanne). I'm not a fan of the " Oh well since I did it too in the past, everyone did and no one should be held accountable" defense. In their youth many people probably made homophobic, racist, sexist or even worse jokes that probably had serious impact on people especially if they were normalized enough to be on movies, litterature, TV and so on. And because people fought back and are still fighting back this is no longer considered okay to do. This is not to say everyone should face dire consequences because they said something 10 years ago but just to put things into perspective a bit.

Out of everything, the right picks on the ricky and morty guy...? And don't they love this show anyway? I feel at this rate they will end up targeting one of their own. I don't expect this to go the way of Gunn so, huh.

I honestly think you should be able to make jokes about any subject. It's just that certain subjects you have to be super careful not to make fun of that subject. Like, take for instance the episode 'Claw of Shame' in Nathan for You. The entire setup for the episode is that Nathan will, if he doesn't escape in time, expose himself to a couple of kids and go to jail as a registered sex offender. The episode is outrageously funny, because the joke is never 'haha, exposing yourself to kids is funny', instead the joke is about all the gimmicky stuff tv shows do to get viewers.

Proof something serious and Dark such as suicide can be funny if given the proper set up and absurdist context.

Agreed. And it's not like the Alt Right control anything, its these creatives that cross the line, they do this to themselves, some of it is irredeemable (JG).

Like, what group of friends doesn't have the darkest and vilest humor internally to cope with how fucked up life is in general? I thought it was almost a societal contract in that you keep that shit to yourself, especially not on Twitter and social media.

You're saying the same thing in a different way. You're acknowledging this plan as being successful (despite it's not, at least not in the way you're proposing) so yes, you're praising them even if you don't want to use that word.

That..doesnt mean Im praising him. Thats you putting words in my mouth.

I think their logic is more like "if i ever hit it big, something i said when i was a stupid teen who i didn't know any better might bite me back in the ass".

Big emphasis in "if".

This is PsyOps at its best. I'm not even mad.
I don't like this edgy humor shit, but to condemn a comedian for portraying something nefarious as something ridiculous kind of misses the point of comedy itself.
Speaking of comedy, I would bet there is someone laughing incredibly hard at you all going hard at each other in this thread.
People talking about George Carlin, he would probably be rolling on the floor right now.

? just joking around dood, no idea who Miles Davis is

Hey, you're fucked up if you watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, also, YOU'RE A WEIRDO GAY.
Can I be Gay Country Mac then?
Cool?

Rick and Morty is mostly devoid of this type of humor so... have fun I guess?

As I said in another thread, I'm a fan of Rick and Morty but I'm not a fan of these jokes. It's the reason why I can enjoy Rick and Morty but not really enjoy the Australian Rick and Morty skit that Adult Swim released or even the cartoon that was the basis for Rick and Morty.
??? The first episode literally has Rick make Morty do things he's real uncomfortable with. Another episode has Rick make a date rape drug so Morty can rape a high school girl but it backfires and makes everyone including adults lust after him. An episode in season 3 had a dude incest fucking creatures and eating the kids from said monster. Am I just remembering wrong? Rick & Morty is full of edgy humor.
lmao people using "purity test" as a slur against people that dont find rape or child abuse jokes funny. Is it really that fucking difficult to go your whole life without your precious pedo jokes?
LOL I just rewatched a GB video. Jeff made a joke but I guess it doesn't pass? Found it pretty funny.

In my defense I did not know how it ended, I just remembered the first part because someone insisting their dumb link is funny and not getting laughs is an old, wellworn road.

There's people who work in many fields where you could dig through a history of their work and find material that was considered funny at the time/questionable/before they were known that would cause a shit storm today,

We're now going back in time to try and find something to be outraged by, like a toy being used as a prop in a dexter spoof and suggesting it somehow means the creator may support/sponsor rape.

If we're talking about a repeat collection of work that's suggestive of the same topic... instead we're looking at an item in someone's body of work and making a claim that shouldn't come so easily.

People on other forums have called people's homes and workplaces just for pissing them off in the past though. Making someone angry enough to dig up old information for harassment isn't out out of the question.
