I've been waiting for a thread like this. This and the FIFA physics thread over at the old place are comedy gold mines!

On one play-through of FFVII I named everyone Sephiroth.

In addition to making most of the dialogue complete nonsense, all hell would break loose whenever the game asked me which character I wanted to put on my team.

Haha, same for me, but I named every character Batman.

Every time Cloud had his Disc 1 dramatic pauses before introducing himself just made me giggle like a little girl.

"Who are you?"
"..."
"I'm Batman."

Is there an opposite to this? Where you study up on the game's lore before you ever start playing so your name can be as appropriate and in-universe as possible? Because that's what I struggle with.

I've used Fartknocker in Zelda. Corny as hell but it makes the game more funny.

Relax grandma it's still funny.

I used to do something similar, but probably worse in the arcades in the 90s. Fighting games were the most frequently played, or at least setup to be the most visible (and generally this attracted more people to them). I played them so much even when the only one available was the AI that most of the screens were covered in that three letter word when it would show the top scores.

I remember that the eldest child of a babysitter I had when I was younger would name Red and Blue from Pokemon "Butt" and "Nugget," respectively.

Can't find it now, but I saw this cool fan art of Earthbound where the player named entered their own name (not the protagonist) as Pokey. Then during the final battle with Giygas, when the heroes are getting hopelessly beat down, the game says, "Pokey prayed for their success", and the art shows a crying Pokey who is secretly hoping Ness and friends can stop the horror he's unleashed.

Shortly after Majora's Mask came out one of my older cousins showed me a scene where someone called Link an asshole. 7 year old me was shocked. It wasn't until years later I had realized what he'd done.

I always made a point to name something in a game "fuckass". Sometimes it didn't let me, but ooooohh I find a way

These never fail to crack me up. I remember calling Angelo the dog from FF8 "Butthole" so when Rinoa did her limit breaks it was "Butthole Launcher"

This is my biggest pet peeve. I can remember when I was younger my friend would do this ALL the time. I hated it then, I hate it now. It just rubs me the wrong way. That being said, to each their own.

Having read over my post, maybe I should consider naming my next character "Takes Games Too Seriously"... we will have to see if there is an RPG that will support that many characters. *sigh*
