Progressive felt like a shameless cashing in of nostalgia that half-assed anything fresh it was saying and hoping bringing back the hits from the Pillows would distract you.

Canti is a perfect meta (unintentionally so) for what Progressive was about. A shell of itself, propped up to make you point at and go "FLCL!" while retaining none of the actual soul from the original.

Haruko retreaded her obsession with Atomsk, but this time it was a focus of the plot rather than a goal meant to explore Haruko's insanely cruel means and how it effected Naota. If Haruko and her Atomsk hunt was a means of forcefully sending Naota into adolescence, what was her purpose in Progressive? To push Ide and Hidomi to grow up? One could argue Hidomi changes through Prog, but we never got such an in depth look into her for that to feel. Haruko splitting and reforming felt more like a thing that happened rather than a layered change FLCL 1 had you come to expect.

N.O. is also treated something to exploit rather than think of anything new or different. in prog, it gets thrown around and given to everyone, despite the right kind of head supposedly being hard to fine (There's no real explanation but FLCL 1 suggests it can only be exploited by a mind of someone who attempts to pretend to be grown up rather than growing up). but in FLCL we saw it happen to anyone with a head, missing the point completely.

In episode 5 Mr. Dodo does say something like "you kids with barely any hair down there are useless!" and the NO levels harvested from the teens during the attack on MM only hit around 60% so I think it's implied that most younger people have NO but you have to be a unique individual to have NO levels capable of pulling anything of value through. Even adult Amarao had NO levels but could only pull some weird dinky slingshot through.
89 songs?? So the Pillows tracks + the non-Pillows background musics?

Yeah I want this, if only to hear and make a judgement on the non-Pillows stuff as stand-alone music.
Gonna need all the new Pillows re-recordings and new EDs regardless.

A bit off-topic, but didn't know where else to post and didn't want to start a new thread...

I'd like to dig into The Pillows' discography beyond their work on FLCL, which I adore. Can anyone recommend where to start or the best way to go about this? They're fairly prolific.

beside some very inspired shots and some great animation, this is such a waste of time and hype...

I expected nothing and its still a let down.

Boy, almost two months until Alternative, huh?

Although it seems to have grown fairly tepid, I've enjoyed the conversation in here, both the glowing and the critical. I grew up thinking FLCL was a thing that only I loved this much, but it's been fun to see this modest community come out of the woodwork in appreciation of a true gem. Seeing the massive line for the concert in Boston gave me a profound feeling that this weird show has affected so many others like it has me, and that was a moving realization.

Ahh you got there early too?? Maybe I saw you, I was like 20-30 people into the line. Right before the convenience store door. How far in line did you start?

But ya I totally I agree with your sentiment. :)

"Hate is just frustrated love." Though "hate" is probably too strong a sentiment for most people here.

I too have enjoyed the conversation here. I haven't found a healthy way to express just how disappointing Progressive was for me, but it was cathartic to read posts and get the same sense from others.

Prog was absolutely disappointing but I don't think it's worthless. I actually like most of the characters and some of the themes, it's the execution that's shitty.

Jinyu is my favorite new thing to FLCL I think.

It's absolutely not worthless... though in my darkest hours, I might argue the only things of worth are the pillows --that were almost mixed out of existence in some sequences--, Adult Swim sponsoring a concert for the pillows, and just finding this community of fans that really adore it.

But, again, if Progressive even turns one fan on to watching the original, or tuning into Alternative, or makes them a fan of the pillows... or if this hot mess impacts anyone in the same way that FLCLassic did for me in 2003... then, hell yea, it was worth it!

not to be combative, but it's hard for me to really like a character who is, by definition, one half of a complete character. it makes her almost literally one-dimensional.

I started in line where it curved around the block to the back of that small park and into an alley. Kinda wish I'd worn nerdier clothes once I saw the rest of the line, haha. Where were you?

Completely agreed. It would make me pretty happy to know that someone went back and watched the original and related to Naota, Ninamori, Mamimi, or whoever (hopefully not finding too much in common with Amarao or Haruko :P).

Hoping for the best with Alternative. That last trailer was extra promising.

I was right in front of where the line had to break to let people into the convenience store next to the Royale. I was wearing a neon yellow Travis Strikes Back shirt(new No More Heroes game) so I was probably pretty noticeable.

And yeah so many people had cool FLCL shirts, I honestly didn't know so many existed(though who knows which weren't official).

Yooo, I totally saw you when we were walking past. Retroactive high five.

Unfortunately I was just wearing a red button up short sleeve and some blue shorts and my only FLCL article, a sweatshirt, was seasonally inappropriate.

Hah wow no way! *high five!* I think I remember some FLCL sweaters so I probably saw you too.
I'm guessing most people from Era probably saw each other to some extent without knowing.

Amazon JP has the soundtrack box up so I preordered it.

The single CD has the 14 Pillows tracks recorded for Progressive and Alternative
The 3 CD special edition has those tracks along with all of the other original music.

Gonna get the big one because I might as well (came out to like $45 shipped), but if you're just looking for the Pillows music on the single CD that comes out to $30.

Also the art they're using for the release in Japan (in theaters) is pretty rad

Can you ship to the US? Because I really want that boxset and I feel like it probably won't come over.

Their work on FLCL is mostly, outside a couple of songs, just from their normal albums. So you can start anywhere really. The music in FLCL is basically like an extended greatest hits collection

I'll time stamp that where Something Like A Romance begins, but listen to the whole album :^)

Definitely listen to entirety of Kool Spice

90's My Life is great

tho since coming off their FLCL music
check out Fool On The Planet, which is a greatest hits album

Yeah, up on the menu bar up top, find the little globe where it says JP, you should be able to drop down and change it to english.

You have to create a new account too, no using your normal account.
There's two versions of the more expensive one. One is some kind of Amazon exclusive? Do we know what the difference is?

So is Alternative a remake of the original?
We don't really know what is it yet in context to the rest of FLCL, but people speculate it might not be a direct sequel in the way Progressive was. It could be a random story that takes place at some point within the FLCL universe or it could be a reboot of sorts. It could also just be a sequel :P we just don't know much about it.

I don't remember any Karen store that looked like an iron in the first show. (The girls look at it sometime in the middle of the episode, I think.) I don't think this series is within the same time as the first one, plus there are (post-iPhone) cell phones. :p

At today's comic con panel they said Alternative is set to start in September 8th.
There was also something else, but I can't remember.

flcl progressive thought the good part of flcl was Wacky Crazy Shit With Robot Fights!!! but flcl alternative seems to understand that the good part was having Feelings about being a teen

Oh, I remember now. At the Comic Con panel today, the producers/creator mentioned that Progressive (I don't know if this extends to Alternative) was planned to have multiple directors for each episode, which is exactly what we saw. However, it wasn't mentioned if they did the same thing with Alternative. Most likely they did, so the quality may take a dip after the first episode and that trailer, which definitely look promising.

I think FLCL Alternative has potential.

Based on that trailer: I like the cast of girls, it looks like it has an actual story, and the animation looks decent.

I'm not watching the trailer and I didn't watch the first episode since I was waiting until it actually aired but I'm hoping it's good. I've made my views very clear on Progressive but that doesn't mean that Alternative can't hit the mark in the ways Progressive missed them.

I guess your enjoyment of Alternative depends on which elements of the original FLCL that you enjoyed most.

Without spoiling anything, the first episode of Alternative focuses more on the "coming of age" and "slice of life" aspects of growing up as a teenager.

Whereas, Progressive had robot monster fights, Pillows music, weird humor, etc. But it stumbles at telling a simple coming-of-age story about growing up.

Man, that art and packaging looks so good. A shame that Progressive doesn't really deserve it.
