I haven't played any, but there are some good VR magic games (skyrim obvs but I have seen some other ones)

But the medium is so good for this - just using the lightning whip in space pirate trainer makes you feel like a god

Summons in FF15 were something else. Truly awe inspiring.

Yeah well too bad the conditions for their summoning are just really vague as heck.

I wish Dragon's Dogma was actually as good as those gifs make it seem. I just tried to play it again for like the 4th time about a month ago and hated it all over again. Ugly game with a horrific story and terrible equipment focused damage scaling. The battle system in that game deserves so much better.

Anyway, definitely going with Soul Sacrifice. Coolest magic system I've seen in a game. I've also been enjoying Wizards of Legend.

Kingdoms of Amalur.

Like other games let you combo sword and gun attacks, this instead lots you combo magic spells. Plus has some megaspells too.

Soul Sacrifice combat was like 95% magic ( You could conjure weapons to fight melee). There were tons of spells to choose from and some spells had synergies. Overall fantastic game.

DD is flashy but lacks substance. Hit a button and the spell comes out, for the most part - fairly simple. I like DD but I think there are games that do better.

Magicka comes close but honestly my favorite of all time is Dishonored.

(It's remarkably hard to find good gifs of this game, if anyone wants to tag in)

I ahdn't even considered this as an option. Great post.

No-one demonstrates it better than Stealth Gamer BR imo.

Oblivion is a lot of fun with it's magic, especially once you get to make spells. You can make stupid room clearing touch of death spells, it's hilarious.

Obviously the 2nd video is using cheats, but you can make really strong spells in regular play.

Andddddd looks like I'm going to have to try Dragons Dogma again. I tried a melee guy first time, and I wasn't too enthralled by it. But that magic looks fucking awesome.

Looking at those DD gifs. I hope the 3rd character on DMC5 is a caster type .

This is true but also somewhat downplaying DD. The spell's impacts feel incredible. Charging the spells, over charging the spells and group charging spells in an action combat environment like this game is handled quite well and pretty unique. The various elements causing different effects on enemies is also taken into consideration here. Mystic Knights sigils, magic counters and magic cannons can certainly be used as fire and forget but that is hardly their true potential.

Dishonored series is a great pick. Few games focus on the darker, assassiny type magics like this one. The charm of the abilities here is not so much in the abilities themselves but what it enables you to do. The interactions you have with the abilities and the world. That said, I would say it requires more skill and consideration to make use of it in a meaningful and powerful way than most games. Probably also why it is harder to find gifs of cool abilities here that properly show the complex setups you are able to perform. Really, those who do not know all the powers will not truly understand the glory simply watching either. Seeing someone good play makes it appear so easy.

Another good choice. Magic is also heavily embedded into the story in Soul Sacrifice. Every character is a magic user as it is the main form of combat. The melee weapons? Summoned through magic of course. I'll quote myself from another thread.

Probably cheating since everything in Soul Sacrifice is technically spells as all the fighters there are mages/sorcerers and even in melee, they use a magic weapon which they summon from sacrificing an offering. Even so a magic based monster hunter? Sign me up!

Look at this Fullmetal Alchemist like nonsense.

I enjoy it for the variety. You have things from mortars to arrows to evasive dashes to burrowing dodges to spears, massive fists, summons, shields, armors, charges, lasers and so much more. Some can even be comboed together for a different effect.

Black Rites are cool in concept as well but maybe a bit too punishing and gruesome for not quite a whole lot of payoff.

Another vote for Dragons Dogma. Summoning some meteors from the sky or a huge tornado and make the enemies fly are some great experiences

I'm an old fart, but the music based magic system of Loom.... still feels so whimsical and pure. Edit: And I'm a dumbass... it's not technically combat. But if it gets anyone interested it's done its job.

Yeah... I've tried to like it so many times too. I can't play an RPG with such lousy story.

I loved how magic worked on FF Crystal Chronicles when playing coop, joining spells to create different or more powerful ones.

Kind of a bummer that DD has been out for 6 years and nothing since has been that great. Still, I agree that FF Type 0 had some satisfying magic and Wizard of Legend looks awesome, I just haven't played it yet.

Gawd, Capcom needs to rethinking this and give us another one.

Visually? I loved how the spells looked in Dragon's Dogma

Functionally and best magic system? Divinity Original Sin hands down and by a mile. I may have missed and not played other similar games but D:OS is the best magic system I have ever played. Magic interacts with each other in a way I only dreamed of.

Dragon's Dogma is an obvious mention for how spectacular and satisfying many of its higher-level spells can be. I also quite enjoy using magic in the Dark Souls games. There's one sorcery in particular in DS3 that I fell in love with, Soul Stream.

Baldur's Gate II comes to mind. Battle of high level mages is like chess. Everyone uses multiple attack, defense and illusion spells, and you basically must read the enemy mage and remove his defense layer by layer to be able to hit him while he's casting some 9 lvl. bullshit like Time Stop or Kill on you. It doesn't look anywhere near those gifs here, but feeling is amazing.

Yeah, I know that people in the West don't like games from the Two Worlds series, but the magic system and magic use in Two Worlds II was and still is one of the best in the industry

I always loved the magic in Skyrim. Felt unstoppable when focusing on the Illusion tree then godly when doing all Conjuration. Just being able to pacify or enrage entire towns or summoning creatures out of nowhere was great.

All of my top picks have already been mentioned so here's Guild Wars 2 Elementalist class, which has access to a ridiculous amount of abilities but D/D Elementalists in particular used to be insanely fun to play.

I hope the sequel comes out and improves the magic system. I've tried getting into Dragon's Dogma twice as a mage but it just feels so boring, exactly for the reason you said.

Wizard of Legend was the first thing to come to mind and glad to see many others already mentioned it.

That game's combat felt real good.

Starting as a mage is like that obviously, but once you unlock the higher level spells and augments it is amazing. Full charging a Full Bolide and raining a dozen meteors down or casting High Fulmination and turning into a giant walking lightning rod, or sending out a mass of giant icicles from a Full Glicel is amazing but you still gotta start out with throwing weak fireballs. It's worth playing one and doing high level magic is amazing.

It's easier to start with a fighting class and then when you're stronger and have access to good equipment and good pawns go grind out your mage jobs much faster and get the better stuff quicker.

Mass Effect from 2 onward is my answer. I just love shooting biotic powers in an arc trajectory, like Pull which lets you... pull enemies from behind their cover, then you order a squadmate to detonate it. Sooo good.

Dark Souls 2 is pretty fun as a hexer and/or pyromancer.
I'm surprised there hasn't been more Dragons Dogma already

latest
This was my favourite spell, especially in Bitterblack Isle. Whipping Elder Ogres and Garms with that and watching their HP bars melt away was pure joy.

You need to play as a Sorcerer to get the good spells, not as a Mage. Mage is for supporting characters/pawns, really.

Also there's more to magic than just the pure magic class; Mystic Knight and Magick Archers are a lot of fun too.
