Well, what I mean is for example a game like some Call of Duty or many other shooters. They can have a really well made soundtrack that fits the action scenes and all that. But then you probably won't hum any specific song or won't stick in your head like, for example, the item shop in a Zelda game, the battle theme in Persona 5 or any RPG, or the desert music in Nier Automata.

They are just different ways of doing OSTs, and I guess OP as well as me, prefer the melodic catchy way of doing music.
Lowkey the GOAT music. But, yeah. I kinda agree about western music tending to be a bit too orchestral or cinematic or whatever. That generic (for lack of a better word) sounding style of music just doesn't appeal to me as much as melody driven stuff you see in Japanese music and indie games.

In just the last year we've had:

- Persona 5
- NieR: Automata
- Celeste
- Cuphead
- God of War

So I disagree. :P

I personally think video game soundtracks have never been better.

God of War
Horizon Zero Dawn
Ori
The Last Guardian
Uncharted 4
Destiny 2
Dark Souls 3
Bloodborne

That's just from the last 3 years.
Those are all great but I wouldn't rank any of them over the likes of Halo 2, Bayonetta, Final Fantasy X, Shadow of the Colossus, etc.

Keep in mind Halo 2 had Breaking Benjamin and Hoobastank on it.

Give these things a few more years to settle in to your skull and then you'll have nostalgia for them, too.

This year and last have been packed with high quality video game music tho. Automata? Persona 5? Etrian V? Splatoon 2??? BotW? Celeste? There's some top notch shit on Mario Odyssey's OST too. Shit Octopath came out last week.

Hmmm, melody worth a fuck huh? So you're looking for a leitmotif/motif. And one on the level of say The Imperial March or similar? Then yeah you're right aside from maybe Ori and Destiny no games this gen have produced OSTs like what you're looking for.

Last gen we had stuff like Helghan Forever(Killzone 2), Nate's Theme(Uncharted), Armored Prayer and Hope Runs Deep (Gears), Gusty Garden Galaxy( Super Mario Galaxy), the Ni No Kuni theme (Joe Hisaishi). You guys can post all the Nier and Persona that you want, not a single one of them has a theme like the ones I've listed. Not even close to a franchise carrying theme.

I can't possibly disagree more. Just last year with Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Persona 5, Yakuza 0, Cuphead, Hollow Knight and Nier Automata we got 6 all-time classics. And that's off the top of my head.

I literally forgot all about that because the only Halo stuff I have on my iPhone is by Marty. Peril and the High Charity Suite are my jams.

I haven't actually listened to FFX or Bayo. Maybe I'll give them a listen this week!
The music has more of an impact when you've played the games and know the context. Still really good though.

I am not bashing anyone who doing music, I simply just voicing my opinion, that lot of game OST lost "soul", if that make sense. Hw many themes or game scores you can hum or sign, almost none would be my humble guess.

Octopath, Nier Automata and Botw? These I came up without even trying and their OST are absolutely AMAZING.
I have no idea what you are talking about.....

Some games with great soundtracks in the last year only:
  • Nier Automata
  • Persona 5
  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • God of War
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  • Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
  • Octopath Traveler
There's a lot of great games with great music. I disagree with your assessment.
yeah, every time I see someone say that game soundtracks suck nowadays, I just think they are playing the wrong games.

No Man's Sky has one of the best soundtracks of the past decade and I'll fight anyone that says otherwise.

See, I'm with you on those pieces, but this is what I mean. Halo 2's is definitely up there overall (maybe the best in the series aside from ODST), but there are weird outliers on it. Like there might be a little too much Incubus in there.

Chances are in another 10 years most of us will just remember BFG Division and Rip & Tear from DOOM and not the more wild, soundscape-y songs towards to the end of the game that by their nature stick less in your head.

I'm sure if OP had asked for leitmotif people would have posted Ori, because yeah, that's probably the strongest case for me this gen.

When OPsaid melody I immediately knew what they meant, and then with the titles they listed I zeroed in. I think this thread might be missing exactly what OP means. Like for example Captain America: Winter Soldier has a fantastic score but at the same time it has nothing on the level of Captain America March from First Avenger.

I think "Aloy's Theme" from Horizon Zero Dawn is going to be exactly that going forward. It's instantly memorable/recognizable.

It's easily one of my favorite main themes.

The following is my favorite track from the game, though:

Absolute stunner.

Don't know how I forgot about that. It could really be something ones Joris revises it for Horizon 2. Still don't know if it compares to his Killzone themes. 'And ever we fight on' is a masterpiece.

Yeah.....no. IMO gaming music could not be better, for many examples already brought up. For a lesser known one, the Paper Mario Color Splash soundtrack is lovely. One of my favorite things about it is that every section/color in the world map has its own little leitmotif.

Familiar with Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons? If so, how do you feel about that in this regard?

(Warning: probably spoilers in the comments if you aren't. Also, this game is amazing.)

Music didn't get worse, production values got higher for some and theres no shortage of electronic chiptunes style soundtracks either.

Being catchy isnt what defines a good videogame composition, particularly when its used to set a tone. The ambience in Playdeads Inside for example, I cant really remember tunes specifically, but the sound design was still phenomenal.

are you asking for music to make love to?

The way that Inside merges diegetic and non-diegetic sound to create it's soundtrack is simply amazing, and is one of the most underappreciated elements of the game:

If anything, that games are now experimenting with different kinds of genres and soundtracks outside of the traditional catchy looping melody is an example of the industry maturing. Personally Inside (alongside it's predecessor Limbo) has one of my favourite game soundtracks despite not actually having what many people would even consider traditional music.

Diagetic is the perfect way to describe it. Rhythmic Heartbeats and Shockwaves that are tied to the gameplay might not be something you would normally include on your personal music playlist, but in the context of being a videogame soundtrack they're making full use of the medium like few others do. Nier:A also makes full use of the medium but in a very different way.

Okay, I did work on the game, but I admire Ed Harrison (Neotokyo)'s work so much, so there are tracks on the Deus Ex: Mankind Divided BREACH soundtrack that still stand out to me even today.

The whole thing is up on Soundcloud too.

I feel that the OP is probably very young and has just exited his most formative years of which the (comparatively recent) OSTs listed were prominent and now nothing new compares regardless of actual quality.

It's OK, it's the same reason I hate pop music made after 1984. People are like dogs, you piss on a tree, now that's your tree.

OP says modern OSTs suck, but makes sure to reference their own musical work twice. C'mon now.

Let me give Western soundtracks some more love. inFAMOUS Second Son has a criminally underrated OST. We need more post-rock in games, and I can't think of any that employ it outside of No Man's Sky.

I disagree with your Human Revolution pick OP, because it's a big demonstration in my mind of the divide between a melodic and ambient approach to game soundtracks. Aside from parts of Icarus, there's really no track that springs to mind when I think of the Eidos-Monstreal Deus Ex games, whereas I've had just about every track in the original game stuck in my head at one point or another.

For example, going into Hengsha in Human Revolution you've got this:

Heavy on ambience, but not something that sticks in my mind. In one ear, out the other by the time it's over. Contrast to entering Hong Kong and hearing this in the original:

was thinking about this exact topic while at work a while back. I think the production value of game music has gone way up but a lot of it is generic and forgettable especially among the AAA games. Currently playing god of war and none of the music is memorable even though its well produced. On the other hand Nier Automata has a fantastic soundtrack despite being a bad game. A lot of game music these days simply lack melody and hooks that were prevalent in the 8 to 64bit days. Why that is im not sure. My guess would be having the tech to do whatever has generated more generic music as a result since being limited by hardware forced creativity in return. Still some really good music out there but also a lot more meh stuff.

Nier: Automata
Xenoblade 2

All in the past 5 years, all as good or better than anything in the decade prior.

And there are more, but in my opinion those 3 are so good that I feel like it renders the argument invalid

(this year, we have Celeste and Octopath already, which have OSTs as good or better than anything listed in the OP)

I hum and listen to many W3 and Nier Automata tracks regularly. Persona 5 as well. Octopath is catching on fast.

Oh and Battlefield 1 had one of the most underrated OST's in 2016. Just brilliant stuff and great background for work.
