Holy shit

I grew up in that neighborhood. This hits really close to home. I'm still pretty close, lots of friends in that area.

Fuck.

US security services better not fucking release any false information to their media again, this city is still in shock, and does not deserve anymore stress right now.

Dude (white?) in all black, black ballcap, w/ messenger bag is walking down street, stops, turns suddenly, fires handgun into restaurant.

WTF.

Hope for no more casualties.

There have always been some mass shootings here. There's not really anything that could be done about it, short of banning firearms (and even in that case, given the porous nature of our southern border, even that would only go so far).

Now, I expect we're going to see more specific strategies for dealing with the recent wave of gun violence in Toronto.

Just a few days ago Mayor John Tory unveiled a plan to install a huge number CCTV cameras and special microphones that can distinguish gunshots.

I hope no one died.

Not to make this about me in any way, but my friend lives right there and I haven't been able to get a hold of him. Hoping for the best. Stressed as fuck right now.

Imagine how much worse this could've been if the shooter waited a few weeks for Taste of the Danforth. Fuck.

I think it will happen here.
It definitely will not. I wouldn't be opposed to it on policy grounds, to be clear, but gun owners are a large constituency. Recall the Chretien government's long-gun registry, which was a firestorm controversy, was never effectively enforced because the provinces mostly refused to do so in regard to people not complying with it, and was ultimately repealed by the Tories with no movement to recreate it. And that was just a registry.

Reports still saying one person is dead, but no additional news since. Hopefully that person is the shooter, and not a victim.

ETF are apparently on scene.

I know what you are saying(and am not arguing because I know you are merely providing a counterpoint) but gun owners can go fuck themselves. This is not the US with it's bullshit 2nd ammendment idiocy. This should not be a political or freedom issue, but a public safety priority. Tories can bitch all they want, but Canadians become unified over humanitarean causes, and the opposition party can commit political suicide for all I care.

I was just driving north on the DVP about an hour ago and was passed by about 15 cop cars going south towards the city. I was wondering wtf was happening. This is sad :(

Guns should be banned aside from law enforcement and military. It's 2018, sorry Billy, you killing deer isn't necessary anymore and a legitimate hobby, time to move on.

This is awful. There are a lot of good game dev folks there — I hope they are safe. Tomorrow is going to be a brutal media shitstorm; i can't even imagine how this will all shake out.

About 1 in 5 households in Canada owns a firearm, the bulk of which are long guns (hunting rifles, in the main). In rural areas, especially, it's far too common for any party that wants to win seats there to propose such a thing. Which is indeed why no party has ever proposed anything remotely like that.

Nah theres been a few bad summers. This could be the worst though.

I know about those summers, but generally what we consider to be bad(because there is no acceptable number of deaths, ever) is not comparable to that in other countries where this shit is as common as breathing air.

This year just seems like something else altogether, which is what is causing the people to wonder WTF was the root cause for this to sudden occur at this frequency.

This is horrifying. What in god's name is causing all the crazies to come out. Toronto is suppose to be the safest city in Canada. Hopefully its only injuries and nobody but the scumbag of a killer died.

Oh no :(

Are gun restrictions high in Canada?
They are, but it doesn't matter because because of the lackluster regulations in the USA gangs can just drive down to the USA, get a gun no questions asked then drive back up with the border guards none the wiser. It's fucking bullshit, but it's what we have to deal with.

5 minutes from home and I basically pass by every day to go to the subway. I've been close to shootings before, but this one definitely makes me the most worried.

Someone recorded the shooter on Instagram.

NSFW just in case. You only see him shooting.

Lemme know if this is alright to post; I can delete it or a mod can if necessary.
