I saw him do a short cooking segment with Jeff Goldblum for Funny Or Die. He seemed to be a nice man. Pancreatic cancer is such an awful disease. Rest In Peace.

Damn. He was a true pioneer. A documentary about his life and work came out a few years ago. It's well worth a watch for anyone interested:

Rest In Peace, truly did great by bringing a lot of ethnic restaurants to the forefront. The doc about him is really great

Staggering loss for LA and the food world in general. His 101 list was a permanent (updated) bookmark in my browser. The LA Times obituary is worth a read. Apparently he was only diagnosed in early July, so this all happened extremely quickly.

No one knew he was ill :(

I'm crushed by this, maybe the most devestated I've ever been by a celebrity death. He opened my eyes and my palette to worlds right under my nose.

He will be so greatly missed and the city won't be the same without him

Oh wow, I never actually heard of him until recently with those Netflix food shows and the Goldblum one.
Ended up looking up his recommendations and everything.

Fuck cancer.

Yeah, same. I found myself tearing up a bit reading his obituary. I no longer live in Los Angeles but while I lived there he taught me so much of what I know about food through his reviews.

Jesus, he died barely three weeks after his diagnosis. Pancreatic cancer scares the shit out of me.

jesus, diagnosed in the same month as well. What a tragedy.

My girlfriend introduced me to him through his top LA restaurants lists. We've only been to one so far (Lucques in West Hollywood) but we'll try and check out some other ones in his honour.

Pancreatic cancer took my father after an 18 month battle which is unusually long from diagnosis to death. Such a terrible disease. I had just started to read Gold's work and read up on him. This sucks big time.

May he RIP. I've ran into him on several ocassions in dtla at the grand central market during lunch hours. After all the old Times building was several blocks away. His top picks written in the Times introduced me to The great hole in the wall restaurants in the SGV.

Oh man so much in front of you

Be sure to hit up Grand Central Market (Sari Sari Store was his recent favorite), Sqirl, Pizzeria Mozza, Night + Market (any of them); Howlin Rays (Far east Plaza), Guelegetza, Taco Maria to name a few.

I'm a little bummed Vespertine will remain his eternal #1.

Watched City of Gold and tried Guelegetza in honor of him. Man, was he a brilliant writer and it is incredible what he did for the city.

L.A. will pay tribute to Jonathan Gold with a 'city of gold' this weekend

Today's tribute episode of Good Food is up now:

Remembering Jonathan Gold (1960-2018)
https://www.kcrw.com/news-culture/shows/good-food/remembering-jonathan-gold-1960-2018
There's a Jonathan Gold-sized hole in the heart of Los Angeles. The Pulitzer-winning LA Times food critic died on July 21, prompting an outpouring of grief and love from around the world. For this special tribute, we gathered the voices of colleagues, friends, chefs, and listeners to celebrate the man who taught us how to eat and live in LA. We dedicate this show to our former colleague of 20 years.

Oh man, this one hurts. After a busy week, I just saw that this had happened.

He showed everyone how much of a food haven LA is, and that you didn't have to look at big fancy places for fantastic cuisine. His advocacy for small, minority-run restaurants pened up my eyes to se many cuisines I never would have other wise known about.

RIP, at the very least he died doing what he loved.
