Uhhhhh okay Wisconsin...smh idk how anybody thought this was appropriate.

Edit:

Basically a bunch of extreme tweets from when he was younger were discovered last week. They include homophobic and racist tweets that are as disgusting as you can possibly imagine.

He's said he right thing since then. But it's just shocking to me that this tone deaf response from the fans happened, in our current climate it's even worse. Imagine being an black or LGBTQ fan at that game?

As an African American born, raised and lived in Milwaukee, WI for the first 24 years of my life I've got to say....

Absolutely no part of this story surprises me.

edit: ^ "Went" is the wrong verb tense homey. Wisconsin has BEEN shit for a loooong time.

I'm mildly curious what percentage of the crowd knew what they were applauding for. Speaking from personal experience, if I were at a sports game and the audience started cheering for something, I probably would too blindly.

Have you never followed sports? A lot of his teammates said they had his back after his tweets became public. A bunch of his teammates showed up behind him when he was talking to the media about his tweets.

https://twitter.com/Brewers/status/1020464382202056704

He said he was young, immature, and stupid, and was willing to accept whatever punishment MLB deemed appropriate. There is no way fans were going to hold it against him given how old he was at the time and how he responded.

So you give him a standing ovation in his first appearance back? Could you be more tone deaf? I'm not asking for him to be booed even, its just so inappropriate to me that this is the response.

And yes i am a big sports fan what does that have to do with anything? His teammates standing up for him has nothing to do with the horrific shit he said.

I'd like to believe all the fans were standing to applaud the fact that Hader is taking full responsibility for the tweets, but I know Wisconsin too well for that to be true for the all the fans there. I hope there were more of the former than the latter

I understand their sentiment but that's doing too much. I often hear that Milwaukee is one of the most segregated cities in America and after shit like this, it's easy to see why.

Wonder what reaction they'd give to Packers players kneeling for the anthem...

No, fuck that, these tweet are from 2011, 2012, and he's the same age as me, 24. Meaning he was in 11th/12th grade when he made these tweets, more than old enough to know saying "nigger" and his openly homophobic tweets was no where near a good thing to say. I'd give him slack Maybe if he was like 12 when he did these tweets but he's way too old to use the "I was young and dumb" bullshit excuse.

Why was he applauded? I can't watch videos rn. Is it directly related to the old tweets?

Of course they showed him support. He didn't try to run away from the controversy. He met it head on and accepted that he made mistakes. He accepted any consequences he might face. He immediately owned up to what he tweeted. He reacted as well as anyone could possibly expect.

This should be obvious, but people didn't give him a standing ovation for his tweets, they gave him support for how he responded.

Get your shit together Wisconsin. I studied and lived in Wisconsin for almost 15 years and this is embarrassing. I know a lot of Brewers fans that wouldn't do that but at the same time I know quite a few that would. I do have to say, it's not just a Brewers problem but about half the population would do something shitty like that. I'm all for saying the guy was young and immature and has learned from it, but that doesn't mean you give him a standing ovation, dumbasses.

That's bull. They gave him a standing ovation because he's one of their own and they felt wrongly attacked. Look at the Braun situation. He lied and tried to ruin someone else's life to get away with cheating. Standing ovation for Braun.

Some get fired for past tweets, others get standing ovation. Such is life.
Sports aren't real. Aaron Rodgers could be on video saying racist shit and no one in Wisconsin would bat an eye. Tom Brady could kill a guy and wear Nazi paraphernalia under his uniform and people in the New England area wouldn't care.

I have to say that I am shocked that it's all white people... shocked!
I bet they're not all MAGAts either, some are probably moderates and "I voted for Obama" liberals.
The US is a lovely place.

Another reminder that Wisconsin would vote democrat mostly because of unions and not because they're really that progressive.

Will they riot if he's fired like Penn State rioting to protect a child molester's protector?

Man, that's pathetic. They acting like he made a comeback from a devastating injry or something. Get a grip Milwaukee fans, he only got embarassed and punished with "sensitivity training."

People seem to only treat teens as kids when it's valuable to them to have the teen be a victim, I've noticed. I think it's fine to support the dude going forward. His earnings are going to be forever diminished because of this anyway.

Most home fans would cheer in various circumstances. I'm trying to think of player backlash and I can only think about contract disputes and domestic assault mainly.

I wouldn't say this is a Wisconsin thing.

Wisconsin = West Virginia of the Cheese Belt?

Sorta! Believe it or not, Democrats still dominate WV at the local level. Same in my part of Northern Kentucky, where Dem voters have to make 19 votes in the primaries and Republicans make 3 because most Dems run unopposed.

You really don't see how tone deaf that is? What other choice did he have? LOL this guy was tweeting about white power, calling black people the n word with a hard R, extreme homophobic sentiment and he got sensitity training and a standing ovation for it. Don't turn this into "he's some kind of hero who should be commended for accepting responsiblity for his mistakes."

I get support for someone that faces their past, teenage or other wise. I commend him for not running... but a standing ovation is a bit much.

Born' raised in Wisconsin and this doesn't surprise me at all. Especially since Milwaukee is still the most segregated city in the country. Aside from the museums and Summerfest, that place is a perpetual dumpster-fire.

OP is being misleading, fans are showing support for his apology and not supporting his racist tweets.

I was thinking about this example during last night's Gunn threads. Unlike Gunn, this guy was actually a teenager when posting racist shit on twitter and is a lot easier to forgive. It's impossible to say "boys will be boys" to a 40 yr old guy making edge-lord pedo jokes. Disney is harsh, it's not a secret that you don't fuck with The Mouse when it comes to kids. Gunn apologized for his old sexist and transphobic blog post about superheroes he'd like to fuck and made a vague reference to his old tweets. But there is no evidence Disney knew about the pedo jokes among his 30k tweets.

I understand offering him forgiveness and supporting him as a player on your team but... a standing ovation? Really? It's a bit much.

It's a lot much.

Sends the wrong message.

Did he do something in the game to earn applause let alone a standing ovation or did he just walk onto the field and that was enough?

Considering Braun is Jewish, I don't think the average #MAGA considers him one of their own. So that example actually works against your point.

You can say "no fuck that" but the public isn't going to agree and doesn't.
