I got a DM after beating an invader in Demons Souls once. It was to a polite apology for invading and it was only because he just really wanted the item you get when you win. I was amazed.

You should at least be fair. He probably doesn't even own the basement he's in. :^)

When I used to get salty messages, I used to constantly go "lol why you heff to be mad. It just game" over and over again

I love getting salty DMs win or lose they make me smile, although I never get why they send messages if they win. They are mad that you beat them, rub salt in the wound. Next time respond like "well if you put in less time messaging and more time playing the game maybe you wouldn't have lost."

Don't reply to them and don't make huge issues about it, or just block them and you won't ever have to worry about it.

Years ago I used to be a massive troll, and I stopped due to boredom, and honestly just becoming more mature. The thing that we hated the most was being ignored, no matter the situation. If you don't make a problem out of it, there's nothing to fuel it and eventually we go away.

Of course people still find it a large issue, but due to people going out of their way to shame and blame only makes a trolls fire burn even stronger.

I'm not downplaying your feelings on the subject, I'm just letting people know from my POV, as previously being a massive troll how we think!

1) it's "traditional" and 2) it's more politically correct to say native americans or first nations and they think they're triggering the snowflakes which is all people like that care about

I'm super lucky to have only had surprisingly positive exchanges over PSN. I still remember the first one I received, back in October 2011 during launch Dark Souls, where I spent a good 30 minutes fighting the same person in Darkroot Garden, only to have them message me: ~"Haha, good matches. I have the automatic invade ring on, so sorry about that. I'll leave a summon sign at the boss just in case you need it."

Basically set the tenor for how I try to interact with folks over multiplayer since then.

I did have to unfortunately disable random messages about a year ago to stop the deluge of spam bots though :(

There should be a twitter account to just highlight these kind of assholes, not unlike racism watchdog.

I love salty rage messages. I get so much joy from winding them up even further. I'll never send a salty or angry message but will always respond for the fun of it.

Like in Rocket League for example, I'm currently at Gold III in 1v1 which is an incredibly average rank, and I've found that when people start trash talking or sarcastically spamming "Nice Shot", "What a save" etc, responding with "Who trash talks at such a low rank lol" or "Well done for scoring in such a low ranked game lol" usually puts them on tilt pretty quick. Usually a "calm down lol" is the best response to an actual angry message. The replies Ive has in response to that vary but in more than ok occasion it's genuinely led to them apologising for whatever it was they said.

I never say lol in any other situation other than to respond to dickheads.

Could have at least blurred out the dudes name, now people will go on a witch hunt and abuse the guy...Im not defending the guy either

The worst DM I ever got was during the Halo: Reach beta. Some kid over voice called me a fucking retard because I abused the Elite's (at the time) OP roll ability to kill like thirteen dudes with one gravity hammer, no trouble. I told him via text that I had a lot of fun doing it, but that it's a beta and I'd be letting Bungie know the shit was OP because that's what betas are for. He apologized and we've been on each other's friend lists ever since.

Hardly the worst game interaction I've ever had, though. That goes to ARMA. I've actually never been called the n word playing any other game. ARMA though, whew. I once destroyed an Epoch base that belonged to a group of racists who'd hound me every time I'd see 'em at the Gun Stores - several hours worth of examples. I played ARMA for many, many, many hours, though. I'd probably run into the same playing Call of Duty if I played any given entry for 2000 hours instead of just 50.

Why not just block the person and move on?
