Was something else. Heavyhanded, over-long, untimely strewn together -- these are all fair descriptions of MGS4's infamous use of cutscenes and typically encyclopedic exposition, for the most part. But if you're going to have us sit through something for a couple days, well, this is how the hell you do it..!!

It would be really great to see other cinematic cutscenes relevant to the in-game narrative that showcase combat to this degree. Other series known for its vivid cutscene work is Final Fantasy, for instance, and there has been some gems from it as well. FFXIII's flashy race scene, for example, is a little frenetic but glorious. Still, it's not quite the same as the real-time in-engine sorcery employed by KojiPro, and as a classic mano e mano clashing of skulls.. o_o

If there are others out there that might possibly top this one, (perhaps something by Platinum or DMC or the like) I'd love to see it... in the meantime, this definitely takes a sizable helping of cake. What do you think Era-ppl?

(In part inspired by talk of the latest episode of Boruto -- yes, that one -- the latest episode of which has a very fun and super sharp fight sequence.... 'member babehs -- who needs pacifism when you can make art?! xP [J/k.])

Having just finished replaying DMC3, there are so many great bits:

That Lady scene is prime Gun-fu.

EDIT: I can't wait for the cutscenes in DMC5. Yuji Shimomoura's work on DMC3 and DMC4 is just so absurdly creative and fun (something about him and that universe - like, I don't think much of his Bayonetta work at all, but the DMC stuff is mint).

The greatest reintroduction of a video game character of all time.

Here is a character that everybody seemed to hate after the MGS2 bait and switch.

It was at this point that this character went from hated to loved so hard that he got his own game.

Amazing!

Never played MGS4 but I really enjoyed that scene. Couple years ago I wormholed into Metal Gears storyline even though I'm not a fan of the actual games. Its awesome.

I need to rewatch this game so goddamn bad. I started a replay of MGS3 and meant to get to MGS4 but... shit happens. Maybe someday.

Raiden's MGS4 choreography is some of the best in gaming.

The Raiden/Vamp fights are seriously awesome.

Modern Warfare 2, the final fight scene.

The entire ending sequence infact is some of the best action crafted in a video game.

Xenoblade 2s cutscene fight choreography and "Heck Yeah!" Moments are among the best in gaming for me. Just getting to see that next major chapter ending cutscene drove me through some of the low moments. And they somehow managed to steadily ramp it up throughout.

Don't want to post vids because of spoilers.

Just finished a quick play session of this couple hours ago, and yes, cutscenes are awesome and gameplay is just as cool because it looks so good.

I hated it.

I liked Raiden just fine in MGS2 but according to Kojima, he was hated by western fans. I certainly recall Raiden getting tons of hate over at GameFAQS and I am convinced Kojima just made him a cyborg ninja just to win over Western fans.

He went from a troubled character who had no idea about what is going on to some emo cyborg. It was a shame. I didn't need anime pop culture to win me over, I already loved the character.

Raiden's action scenes in MGS4 are some of my favorite action scenes in all of gaming. They're just impossibly cool and badass. And as OP said, they also contribute a lot to the story and character.

Agreed. I've got nothing but love for MGS4.

^Seems fitting we'd get this kind of fight scene calibre in a videogame 10 years after the Raiden/Vamp stuff.

If we're not just referring to pre rendered stuff, the battle between Kratos and his father Zeus always stuck out to me. The way it switched to a 2D fighter game, with the music pumping, and how it ended..... the most memorable fight scene in a game for me from the last gen.

Man, it's really time for me to replay through the whole series again. MGS4 has so so many problems, but I really loved it and will defend it to this day. I really wish they had just ended the series with this one as 5 really added nothing. I also loved MGR:R but kind of wish they had gone with the initial idea of sticking it during and before MGS4, was really sad to see that poor Raiden got pulled back into the game AGAIN.

I hate what they did to Raiden with a passion. I love Rising but he had so much potential outside of being a cyborg ninja

edit: with that being said the first vamp fight is the most sexual thing i've seen

MGR:R isn't canon, is it?

Depends who you ask. The name "Solid" was removed during development to convey that it was a spinoff, but if that makes it canon or not is a bit of a debate. I believe Platinum insist it's canon. I don't think Konami or Kojima have said anything clear regarding it, and probably don't care. It seems to be more canon then games like AC!D and GBC MGS, as it hasn't really been refuted yet where others have.

Except V added plenty, both to the story and characters. Really adds to the overall MGS timeline.

And honestly even if it had no story at all, its gameplay alone justifies its existence. Easily one of the best, if not the best, playing games ever made.

Nah, not really. Most consider it a spin off.

And I agree with Robin above, the game should definitely have been between MGS2 and MGS4 as initially planned.

Always feel sad when I come across concept art from MGS4's artbook with Raiden holding baby Sunny. What could have been.

The one that single-handedly changed haters mind about Raiden. Then again, I liked him anyway.

The Lady fight did nothing for me. Found it corny and lame back then, same today. Doesn't help I still hate her design.

Obviously Onimusha 3's opening counts for this thread. Directed by Donnie Yen. You can't go wrong.

Eh, I disagree I guess. I did enjoy the gameplay quite a bit and it's not like MGSV left me outraged or anything of the sort, I just find it hard to justify a numeral for what little story it provided. Honestly if they had called it Peace Walker 2 I'd probably have raved about it, as silly as that is.

I guess because it feels like I must have been playing a different game as I found it to add plenty to the world, story and characters.

Big Boss, Huey, Paz, Miller, Mantis, Zero etc. all became way more interesting after V and that's not even counting the new characters. And its story reaches into pretty much all the other mainline MG games. Heck it even makes a reference to Sunny in a way that makes sense and adds to MGS4's plot.

So yeah, I loved MGS's story before the game but there's no way I can separate it now from what came with MGSV and still like it as much. It basically closes the loop on the MGS story perfectly.

No cut cinematics in games will always be a stupid idea to me.

Considering every time you close and load the game, die and respawn, there is a cut.

Even in GoW - entering the quick travel door- there were a few white screens.

Yup though in GOW they say that there isn't a cut in the fast travel door. Kratos is still there but just covered with the white light.

Best absurd over the top moment of Twin Snakes is in the second video, Metal gear rex is is finally activated, a 40 foot tall tank is making it's first massive movements, what is Solid Snake's response? He runs TOWARD it full speed, friggin' launches like 40 feet into the air and tries to kick it!

The fight in the OP is good. But personally I only really enjoy awesome cutscenes if they are happening in a sub window while I'm focused on doing something else so I can't actually watch it.

If there's a thread for Asura's Wrath to shine, it's this one. The brawler sections are iffy, but there's are lot to love with the QTEs and cutscenes. I mean, it's an angry God throwing hands with other Gods and Godlike Entities.

It's Battle Anime nonsense ramped up to 11.

3:38 to around 3:50 gives me butterflies. All of the boss fights have at least one moment that gets your blood pumping.
