For reference...
  • Street Fighter V lost about 200 entrants compared to last year.
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ didn't reach SFV's 2622 from last year, though not by much.
  • Smash Wii U & Melee both saw declines, more so Smash Wii U. With that said, Smash Wii U got 3 more entrants than Melee despite the latter being a Sunday game.
  • Tekken 7 got over 200 more entrants compared to last year.
  • BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle has over double the entrants compared to Central Fiction.
Long story short, every returning game this year saw a decline except for Tekken 7.

I wrote this in the other thread but I'll repost here. I feel unsure about the future of Melee at EVO with those numbers. Not bad at all, but it's the only game here with absolutely no dev support and having two Smash games was already pushing it.

Very strong numbers for both DBFZ and Tekken.

FighterZ is bringing the hype. For real, this is the most excited I've been about a game at Evo in a long time - since that year Melee came back and we thought it was going to be a one-off.

I recall Wiz saying this may be Melee's last year due to how difficult setting up for it has been and how long it takes to do despite the viewership. Would not be surprised if EVO 2019 only has Smash Switch making the cut.

In terms of Smash, Ultimate was always gonna take Wii U's spot at EVO. So unless something else happens with Melee, I could see it sticking around for next year.

Mr Wizard tweeted this around E3.

3 smash games will never be at Evo. Also with Melee players requiring 3/5 for 64, we can't accommodate them at Evo, so this could possibly be their final year at Evo. I hope Melee is super exciting in the arena this year!

Great to see Cross Tag doing well, it's such a fun game, looking forward to watching some of those matches, hopefully Yang is prominently featured.

Yang will definitely be tournament-legal, but I'm not sure about how viable she is since I don't keep up with BBTag competitively.

really surprised at that final gap between DBFZ and SFV, they were really talking up the big difference between the two of them but in the end it didn't really happen

still very happy to see Tekken 7 at 3rd, it's really nice to see Tekken big at EVO again

as for Smash wow they are close, next year is gonna be interesting for smash games at EVO. I have to wonder if some of Ultimate's hype gonna rub off on Melee or is not gonna end up going anywhere

Never said that Wii U was staying... Thought it was obvious that Ultimate replaces it.
I'm mainly referring to the tweet that started the discussion, I apologize for not making that clear.

Either way, unless things go sour for Melee at EVO this year, I'd imagine that it'll be Ultimate & Melee at EVO next year.

I think it depends how well smash switch is received. Its going to end up selling as much as 3 times more than the wii U version. I think it will be much more popular than the wii U version on the circuit and that could lead to melee losing numbers and ultimately losing its place.

Yeah I still think it'll be Ultimate + Melee for next Evo but this is the first time since we had two Smash that there is reason to doubt it imo.

Cross Tag Battle doing well was kinda expected, the game is brand new. I didn't expect Tekken 7 to do better than last year, it means the community is sticking with the game, good!

DBFZ is gonna be fucking hype

I bet SFV is gonna be last again, with DBFZ right before that.

These numbers always seem low to me. SFV and DBZ got some good numbers though. I hope SFV goes on first just so I can go to sleep earlier.

I'm not expecting Melee to return next year.
Like I said, unless things go south for Melee at EVO this year, I'd expect it to share space with Smash Ultimate next year. What happens after that is anyone's guess.

Tekken 7 was the only returning game that saw an increase from last year, & BBTag more than doubled Central Fiction's 2017 numbers. Both games should be commended on their accomplishments in terms of EVO entrant numbers.

That seems pretty likely to me, considering the Switch is vastly more popular than the Wii U, and Ultimate won't have a separate handheld version competing for sales.

Ultimate will also be vastly more convenient to setup than any previous Smash, considering everyone can just bring their own Switch. Certainly compared to the nightmare of Melee setup in 2018. And considering Ultimate has every character in the series and is adopting some melee-style mechanics, I think Melee's days at EVO are probably numbered.

I don't really think the two can share space and we already have Mr Wizard's comments. I also don't expect things to go well for at least one of the Smash games.

Having everyone bring their own Switch would be a disaster. Quite literally a TO's nightmare

With what we've seen so far it's a safe to say that Ultimate will be more popular with both casual and competitive players than Smash Wii U was.

For me the big thing about Melee is more the fact it has been on a downvard trend for years entrants wise while other franchises are growing bigger (DBZ and Tekken) or getting closer (Blazblue). Add that the fact it's not supported by devs like all other games and there is a logic here for why removing it makes sense. Espescially since Smash Ultimate will probably be massive and get the Sunday slot, leading to less Melee entrants because Saturday.

Like I said, every game besides Tekken 7 saw a decline this year, it's not just Melee. Though you do have a point about Melee potentially losing even more entrants as a Saturday game, especially since it barely lost to Smash Wii U (which is a Saturday game this year).

Tekken 7 is having its best year. The game manages to stay strong just by being the hypest fighting game there is to watch

Wish they'd dump these blazblue, guilty gear, injustice clingons. Oh and smash. Aaand Tekken.

Make it DBZF, SFV, SSF2T, MKX, and open a creche for the smash players (and dont film it).

The reaction from a lot of the Melee crowd the year Wii U got the Sunday slot was disgusting to be honest. I know we like to call them bad apples but there were a lot of bad apples. I do hope Melee stays though.
