Title seems utterly misleading. He's got a dumb and shitty sense of humour but I don't see a controversy here. I'd guess a big company like Disney checking through someone's Twitter history is standard practice before hiring them.
I really don't like this trend of diggin up people's pasts and shaming them with it, as if people can't change at all, and everything they do 10 years ago in any way reflect on the kind of person they are now.
Also, as others have said, Gunn has written and directed some fucked up shit. It's like OP had never heard of him before Guardians of the Galaxy.

I don't know about the rest of Era, but I couldn't give a monkeys about Marvel movies myself. I don't think I've seen one since Age of Ultron.
I do like Super and Slither though, and I know that James Gunn has a history of being a shock jockey. This is a guy who wrote a script for an R-rated Scooby Doo movie, so I'm not going to act shocked to learn that a decade ago he was writing gross rape jokes on Twitter. The context might not redeem what he had to say, they're still crass, shitty jokes about rape. It's just not a revelation either.
In the case of PDP, it was a current and ongoing transformation of his character. He wasn't known for edgy comedy, Disney didn't hire him for their children's program to do edgy comedy, when he started doing edgy comedy, they backed out. I doubt Disney gives a damn about Gunn making shitty jokes 10 years ago.
Ironically, these are the kind of tweets that they'll defend with their lives if it's said by an alt-right personality.

Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I've developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.
It's not to say I'm better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it's shocking and trying to get a reaction are over.
In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies.
For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn't living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it.
Anyway, that's the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don't anymore. I don't blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.
