No offense, but FUCK that garbage. If we don't push to get EVERYONE voting, we don't deserve to call ourselves a democracy. If we don't think we can win most of the inactive portion of the electorate to our side, we may as well stage a violent coup, dissolve Congress, and institute an unelected liberal junta.

I feel the same way... in reverse. If the left can't win without pushing disinterested kids to vote, wtf is wrong with us, our platform, our values, and our country/system as a whole?

I'm not saying that we shouldn't encourage participation in our system somewhat, but the whole "We could have won if only X% of eligible millennials had voted! We gotta push, push, push young people to vote!" comes off as desperate and hysterical. Its a very blunt attack with an ass load of drawbacks especially as a significant number of those kids age to the right. Targeted (I mean beyond just age) grassroots efforts are far superior and more beneficial in the long run.

While the jump from 2014 sounds nice, it's so much easier for people to say that they'll vote instead of actually voting. Eh, we'll see what happens. God help us all.

or they have other reasons for not voting.... ever considered that?

You'd have to have a preeeeeetty good reason to be able to tell minorities and poor people "Don't give a shit what happens to you".

(One poll comes out with bad news)

"Oh god we're doomed, the kingdom is lost"

(The aggregate shows Democrats ahead by more than nine points)

"lol can't trust the polls"

The bulldozer isn't Trump/the Republicans, it's the American democratic system in general. Voting is playing right into their hands as it's acknowledging the legitimacy of the electoral system. Not that I think people shouldn't vote, I just think that people shouldn't expect much change from voting.

Encouraging voluntary disenfranchisement is only making the electoral system less and less legitimate. Unless you think democracy is fundamentally unworkable, you should be encourage voting WHILE ALSO working to reform corruption through other means. Politicians won't start caring about your opinions because you DIDN'T vote; to them you may as well not even exist.

I'm a millenial and I'll be voting.

Fellow dumbass millenials who seem to think everything can be boiled down to "both sides," please join Mama LilWayneSuckz over here at the kitchen table............................If you don't drag your gluten free asses to the voting booth for these midterm elections.... and put down the avocado toast!!!

Also a good portion of that sample are not even millennials...

I think that reform and representative democracy are fundamentally flawed, yes, I think the most surefire way to get massive change is through revolution. The capitalist system is always going to lead to small groups of individuals dominating over a much larger population, that's how competition works and when you're competing you want to make sure you stay on top.

I found the problem folks:

The 28% poll is from the Public Religion Research Institute and the Atlantic

So uh, the heavily religious and mostly not millenials age group of young voters will be having the 28% turnout rate.. . Honestly for that demographic lower is probably better.

In contrast to asking in church or whatever:

a recent poll conducted by the Associated Press and University of Chicago's NORC found that 32 percent of young voters would certainly vote and 56 percent were likely to. Another poll by Cosmopolitan magazine and SurveyMonkey found that 48 percent of young voters were "absolutely certain" they'd vote in the midterms.
Ahhh! I was actually worried for a second.

Hey look that's confirmation bias, just like what Trump does!
Like it's not even just about "trusting the polls," there have been countless examples in recent special elections of a highly energized Democratic base that simply wasn't there in 2016.

I understand being concerned about GOP fuckery but all signs have pointed to a good election for the Democrats. People burying their heads in the sand and screaming that Democrats are going to blow it are just being foolish.

If that's your opinion, then that's your prerogative, but I'd prefer that you be more upfront in your conviction that representative democracy in America is an unsalvagable failure that must be replaced through revolt.

Why the fuck is Vox providing the wrong age group for Millennials???

I am an actual Millennial, born in 1986, am 32 years old and I have voted in every single election since I turned 18 in 2004. Here's a picture of me right when I got home from voting in the 2018 primary for my state:

It's just BS. 55+ year olds are mostly retired and/or senior positions at their jobs. They can go anytime they want. Millennials are struggling and going out to vote isn't as convenient. If voting was fucking online then we'd see a total reverse. It's so agitating.

I think you and I are on different wavelengths but fundamentally agree. I don't want to strongarm kids to the polls, but I think our ultimate goal as a democratic society should be to encourage total civic consciousness, even if that means people voting who we might disagree with. That doesn't preclude targeted mobilization of those groups who we agree with politically, but I think it is still incumbent upon us as citizens of the US to represent the interests of the whole electorate by seriously pursuing a state of total enfranchisement.

Shameful. People don't mind going on social media being all political and act like they care but at the end of the day they rather post some instagram photos and stories to get them likes and popularity instead of stuff that actually matters.
If the gop wins again then there's no one to blame but yourselves dear Americans.

We need to make voting mandatory for younger folks- get them in the habit early. Perhaps make it mandatory for college financial aid or loan repayment programs?

Mandatory?
Hahaha

At this point voting isn't even accessible.

Easiest solution is national holiday.

National democracy day. Grillin, voting, drinkin.

Gop would shit their pants

It's weird people blaming those "complaining on social media" when the ones that are politically engaged are probably the ones voting...

By the way there are a bunch of states and areas in those states that make it rediculously hard to vote. There are a lot of people who'd like to vote but are unable to due to their job or location or because they were suspiciously purged from the voter roll. Just wanted to point that out so you don't condemn literally everyone who doesn't vote.

My old poli sci teacher would lecture the class if you don't vote, don't bitch.
Get an absentee ballot. Easy to fill out and send it in.
Voted ever since I turned 18.
I know people who still refuse to vote saying it won't change the outcome.

I am 29 and will definitely be voting. I don't think I've missed any elections since I turned 18.

Unfortunately, trying to get my friends to vote too is definitely an uphill battle :|

I guess I could have just stated that I'm a socialist/communist outright, yes.

yeah, you're full of shit. Every socialist shows up to vote because that's how a socialist system gets shit done.

You're just here to bitch about it while allowing Putin to rule your dumb whiny ass. Decision are made by those who show up. Show up and vote, dumbass.
