I'm happy the only time I see Brad Garret and Ray Romano is in quick clips playing the WSOP Main Event.

I never understood the popularity of this show. Why was it popular with conservatives? It was the dirtiest of that era of family show. The family dynamics were screwed up enough, besides Robert obviously wanting to bang Ray's wife. Wasn't it the show that had a baby played by a teenager or something? I also found it annoying/insulting to see Ray play a writer who never wrote (and was obviously a dumb guy).

The dirtiest? In what way? It had some coy references to sex and whatnot, but no more than any other sitcom in that time period. It was probably one of the cleanest, really.

I don't think it was necessarily all that popular with conservatives specifically, more that it was in an era where there was a lot more bleed over in what people watched than the fractured viewing habits of today.

He wrote all the time, he was a sports columnist after all, there were entire episodes based on him in his basement office writing and episodes where that was highlighted.

The show worked because it was not the typical happy family, everyone was neurotic and crazy in there own way. Unfortuantely as with many shows that overstayed their welcome, the characters became bloated stereotypes of their worst characteristics over time.

Still one of the best sitcoms ever made

Why is ray always DTF? Like literally always

Everybody Loves Raymond was my first experience with sitcoms, around the age of 15, I got all 9 seasons on DVD and watched the everloving shit out of it, I would litterally put on a random episode before I went to bed EVERY SINGLE NIGHT, it'll always have a special place in my heart

God this show was really really bad. Can't sustain an entire sitcom on "my wife can't cook waaaah!" jokes.

Once you get older and have to deal with inlaws, aging parents, kids, You will understand.

Ray is a pretty shitty lazy entitled husband though. In that sense it has become a bit dated

His dad is a snarky asshole, his mom is manipulative and controlling, and his wife is version 2.0 of his mom.

Deborah deserves better

Her husband is unreliable, her in laws are constantly over and trying to control their lives, she raises the kids all by herself and they are a racket.

I feel bad for her most of the time because the shows antics relies on ray screwing up her day somehow

I agree.

Related, king of queens is a national treasure and sitcom gold. I mean look at this shit

I have just never understood this. I swear in every discussion about Everybody Loves Raymond, the show gets shit on and then King of Queens gets brought up as the far superior show. Like I'm totally supportive of people enjoying whatever they enjoy but... King of Queens was a very average sitcom. Half the jokes in that show boil down to "Doug is fat!" Does it even have any quoteable lines? ELR was not great but it had its moments.

It's so interesting watching this show and The Middle back to back at times and seeing Patricia Heaton go from the "smart" and logical spouse to the comical spouse who has none of her shit together. Her characters in the two shows have polar opposite personalities.

I for one, do not love Raymond.
They don't. That show fucking sucks.
I always hated this show.
Even the episodes of King of Queens with Ray in them are worse
Nobody loves Raymond.

He's an idiot, and she's a nag. It works for the show but I don't enjoy spending time with those types of couples. She's Marie 2.0. Plus, wasn't moving across the street from the in laws Frank and Marie's idea that Deborah was cool with and Ray was sceptical of?

Raymond is actually the kid from the Twilight Zone episode who can make anything happen with a simple though while also being able to read minds. If anyone doesn't love Ramyond... well they turn into a giant Jack in the Box or go away forever.

For me, this is the GOAT sitcom.

I am offended that people mentioned Kevin James in the same thread.

My parents watched this all the time when I was younger. I for one, do not love Raymond. I remember his mom being terrible.
Yeah, mothers and mother in laws are like that in real life. People liked it because it was relatable.

Couldn't get into it when I was younger, much like Seinfeld, I just needed to get a little older to relate more to it.

Hated it when it was airing live. Came back to it's reruns like 10 years later and can enjoy it for the most part. Also enjoy King of Queens.

Edit:

There is an episode based on someone absolutely hating Ray and Ray being pathetic by having a hard time dealing with it. The episodes that mocked Ray for having something slightly inconvenient were usually pretty funny

I remember enjoying the show when it first aired but I don't care much for it now. It's palatable for maybe half an episode before I'm sick of everyone and need to change the channel.

I don't remember the exact reason for the title, but it wasn't pitched by Ray and he actually hated it. Dunno if it grew on him or not. I believe he did an interview with Chris Hardwick on Nerdist like, six years ago.

I remember things from this sitcom, which means I must have liked it more than almost every other. I remember Marie asking Deborah if she was making herself "available" to Ray, and when Ray was sick in bed Marie being unsatisfied with the accuracy of the thermometer reading from Ray's mouth and telling him to roll over.

Did they literally take the character of George's father from Seinfeld and just transport him into King of Queens?

Everyone in the show is a terrible person except for maybe Robert.

Terrible people can be funny, though.

Isnt the name of the show based on Robert being extrememly bitter about Raymond having his life together and his parent's affection

I guess that must be it, cause he's a horrible person in the show.

Edit: It's kinda like with Friends tbh, if you look past the jokes they are pretty horrible to each other a lot of the times. Maybe Phoebe is OK.

People in this thread that are saying ELR is better than KoQ are wrong. KoQ is the better show.

It is.

Man i love this show, my wife loves it too. And yes 'we' also love Kings of Queens. Since we watched both series a couple of times we never got into many other sitcoms again, except The Middle and Big Bang Theory. We miss a show like everybody loves Raymond. Any tips?

I would watch an episode before school with my pa.

It was a good show. I'm sure a lot of it hasn't aged too well. But it wasn't necessarily about the audience liking Ray, maybe he's closer to a British sit com character.

It remined me of 'My Family'; an often underrated British sit com that's largely forgotten now.

The episode where Ray has to help his cousin Gerard pretty much sums up the whole series.

I associated Everybody Loves Raymond with Home Improvement from the 90s as pretty standard nuclear family sit cons that are explicitly 'not about th kids'.

Raymond has a better supporting cast in the parents and Robert that gives it more vatiety in stories. The core relationship between Ray and Debra is a lot weaker though. At least with a Home Improvement, you can feel why they are together and that they loved each other. Ray and Debra can be so mean to each other and lie all the time for no reason. People on the show also often call Ray a 'great father' but i'm Not sure why.

My 2nd favorite sitcom behind How I Met Your Mother. Robert might just be my favorite sitcom character. Absolutely hilarious. He can just stand still by himself and it would get a chuckle out of me.

I never understood the popularity of Everybody Loves Raymond. It was the universe's biggest mystery. Then How I Met Your Mother came along...
